Honda preparing turbocharging?

Honda developing diesel V6 - - By JAMES B. TREECE | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek

During an interview with Automotive News, Fukui also said:

Honda turbos are possible. The Acura RDX SUV, which went on sale in August, is the first Honda or Acura vehicle in the United States that uses a turbocharger. But although Honda aims to differentiate Acura cars and trucks from Honda models, Fukui rejects the idea that turbos might be limited to Acuras.

"We don't have any intention to keep turbos just dedicated to Acura," he says. "In the future, it's possible that they will be adopted in Honda products as well."

To me this certifies that we will certainly see turbos in Honda vehicles very soon.

It will be nice to get a turbo engine with a 6-speed manual. SH-AWD and better weight distribution would be icing on the cake.

This is going to make the horsepower wars heat up in the entry level premimum sedan market.

Turbo is the way to go if you want to keep the packaging/weight down. It must have been a tough choice for BMW to go the turbo route instead of just more displacement on the 335. Seems like Honda is going down the same road.

I wonder if this means no V8 but use some turbo'd V6 to get to V8 power levels.

I doubt it, its already hot. 2nd, Acura is going to be like audi, they'll need awd on their 300+hp cars so they will most likely will be heavier and pricey compared to companies that can throw big power in their base rwd sedan/coupe.

I hope the age of the turbos is upon us. I may be wrong, but it does seem less expensive to turbocharge existing i4 and v6 honda engines than to develope a v8.

From what I've read on several message boards over the years, I'd got the impression that most Honda fans were against turbocharging and FI in general. They always talked about how Honda does more with less, etc. Why the sudden change in position on the issue of Honda and FI in general?

I personally do look forward to seeing what Honda will come up with it the utilize FI on more of their models.

I found that kinda ironic too. OMG hp/l rules n/a Honda Power, hehe. The whole vtec generation is just about dead.

They're probably associating the huge PITA that aftermarket FI brings to the table, or the huge cost; both of which are pretty unHonda concepts.

The whole Honda Fanboi concept was that N/A Vtec could beat anything with an engine half the size and that if "Honda ever developed a v8 the size the vette has it would have a 1000hp" so even though honda doesn't have a v8 they are still better etc.

Pretty much, it shows honda never really understood what they stepped into. That unrefined changeover in rpms in the ~99 Si/Itegra GSR is what created a cult. What did Honda do, they refined the hell out, made it intelligent, a vtec that would not translate feeling, score Honda engineers.

All that Acura needs to do is get rid of FWD or just put FWD on the TSX and give the TSX a SH-AWD option and give the rest of the Acura lineup SH-AWD.
