Honda shows Insight Concept [Updated with live photos]
Earlier today at the Paris Motor Show, Honda officially unveiled the concept version of its upcoming 2010 Insight hybrid. Though labeled a concept, the show car very strongly previews Honda’s upcoming bargain-priced Prius fighter which will be unveiled officially later this fall.
“The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda’s commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency,” said Takeo Fukui, Honda CEO.
Priced below the Honda Civic, this Japanese-built hybrid will carry over much of the hatchback styling from the FCX. Inside, the Insight appears similar to the Prius with a flat floor and large space, as well as a futuristic dashboard.
In addition to recycling the Insight name, Honda will equip the new hybrid with the same 1.3-liter Integrated Motor Assist system found in the current-generation Honda Civic Hybrid. However, further development of the system will cut the IMA’s cost by about 50 percent in the new hybrid.
Although the new Insight will be loosely based on the Fit, it will measure in at 3 inches longer and 1 inch wider than the Fit, which Honda said will also be available with a hybrid powertrain in the near future.
One Honda insider told Edmunds the Insight’s fuel economy would be “insane,” with some Japanese sources predicting mileage as high as 71 mpg. Actual mileage will likely be lower when it hits our shores, but should still be impressive.
And if those lofty fuel-economy numbers weren’t enough to cause an instant waiting list for the new hybrid, the next-generation Insight will list from under $18,500 – undercutting the Prius by thousands of dollars.
The new Insight is expected to debut at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show and will likely be in North American dealerships by late spring 2010.
Honda hopes to build 200,000 units annually, with half of that production to be sold in the United States.

With obvious design cues taken from the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle, the Honda Insight concept takes a bow today in Paris. The small 5-seat 5-door hatchback hybrid vehicle makes a direct challenge to Toyota's guilt-ridding Prius, and plans to make its market launch in the U.S in spring 2009.
Still, Honda gives no specifications regarding fuel efficiency and emissions, but we do know it uses the same 4th generation IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) 1.3-liter compact engine used in the Civic Hybrid.
Also, the hybrid control unit and battery are located under the cargo space.
Honda expects to sell 200,000 Insight units per year globally (approximately 100,000 in North America), ultimately providing Honda's with 500,000 global sales of hybrid units a year.

^ they're just for show. if you want LED headlights that really illuminate the road, you need much bigger ones, like on the Lexus LS hybrid. It wouldn't be these tiny little ones.

IMO, it is a little too small. I think it would be more viable as a mid-size car such as the Prius, allowing it to be a good choice for families or anyone who wants a decently sized vehicle that is also fuel efficient. I would like to see it appeal to a broader range of buyers.

Eco Assist combines multiple functions: the driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable transmission, engine and related powertrain components to conserve fuel; and a feedback function that uses speedometer background color to provide real-time guidance on environmentally responsible driving. An economy scoring function further provides feedback about current driving techniques, as well as feedback on cumulative, long-term driving style.
"Hybrid drivers enjoy trying to get the most fuel economy from their vehicles," said Dan Bonawitz, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The visual nature of Eco Assist is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding."
Honda developed the powertrain control, driver guidance and driver feedback functions of Eco Assist to help enhance real-world fuel economy. In particular, the scoring function provides cumulative, long-term feedback through graphic 'leaves,' which grow over time as drivers learn and implement driving practices that increase fuel economy.
Activated by a green "ECON" button on the instrument panel, ECON mode optimizes control of the transmission, engine and other powertrain elements to conserve fuel. A couple of days ago I drove my mother in law's brand new 2009 Fit, and it feels at least as big on the inside as my TSX, with more headroom and more room ahead of the dash. It's amazing what they do with such a small car.
