GM fails to 3-peat in U.S. market share
By John K. Teahen Jr.
Automotive News / January 06, 2004
DETROIT -- General Motors fell short in its quest for a third consecutive year of higher market share. GM captured 28.3 percent of U.S. sales last year, down from 28.6 percent in 2002.
GM dealers in the United States sold 4,714,782 new cars and light trucks last year, down 2.2 percent from 4,820,016 in 2002. If GM had matched its 2002 sales last year, it would have had 28.9 percent of the market and would have had its 3-peat.
GM's current market share is down from 33.5 percent in 1993. It fell to 28.2 percent in 2000 before rising to 28.3 percent in 2001 and 28.6 percent in 2002.
