Ford Reflex Concept News

Reflex Action: Ford's Detroit show Reflex concept features diesel-electric hybrid system - - Source: Autoweek

Ford hopes its Reflex concept shows that small cars can be bold, American and innovative. Ford thinks the concept will be one of the stars of the Detroit show. Reflex features a diesel-electric hybrid system using diesel, electric and solar power. This combination of power can deliver maximum fuel economy – up to 65 mpg, says Ford – without compromising performance.

The concept features an electric motor on the rear axle in addition to the hybrid system on the front axle. The rear motor provides all-wheel-drive capability.

The energy is stored in a new-generation lithium-ion battery pack, using the technology found in cell phones. Ford was the first manufacturer to produce a vehicle using this type of battery system when it introduced the Ford Ka research vehicle in 2000.

Another green feature is that the concept uses ground rubber from scrap athletic shoes, called Nike Grind, as insulation to reduce noise and vibration in the car’s interior.

The interior uses a 2+1 backseat configuration. Mesh seat covers are transparent, offering maximum airflow for comfort. The cockpit comes alive with keyless activation: At the touch of a button, the instrument cluster controls appear in a blue hue as the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) switch on.

Safety features include inflatable safety belts and BeltMinder for backseat passengers. The inflatable safety belt helps reduce injury risk to second-row occupants. BeltMinder alerts the driver when second-row occupants are not buckled up.

Ford Gauges Its Reflex - - Source: The Car Connection

Ford's new concept car bears the name Reflex - a good choice since Ford is using the concept to gauge how buyers will respond to the new styling theme, also echoed in the recent Iosis concept vehicle. The small-is-beautiful Reflex concept "proves that small cars can be bold, American and innovative," the company says. The compact proportions are teamed with a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain that could deliver 65 miles per gallon. The interior is crafted from recycled and synthetic materials; the Reflex also has solar panels to generate some power and sports inflatable airbags along its rear seatbelts. Stay with TCC as we bring you more on the Reflex, the new Lincoln MKX and more Ford Motor Company concepts and production vehicles from Detroit next week.

True. There's alot of Iosis ques in the Lincoln concept. It'd be nice to see it come to market in one form or another.

It's too futuristic for me to rock around listening to Duran Duran "The Reflex."
I was hoping for something that's more 80s.

... huh, any existing Ford product would do
