Yeah, it is a good bang for the buck... I've actually considered the mustang, but I just don't know if I can handle the cheap interior after driving my CL for 4 years (had a v8 tbird before that)... I think I've been spoiled, but at least the mustang can be had with leather and heated seats...

Lots of people are going to cross shop the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger. Ford just needs to freshen up the current version to keep it's edge.

Ford tries to stem Mustang sales slide

Ford tries to stem Mustang sales slide

Updated: 3:07 p.m. PT March 5, 2007

DETROIT - The latest version of Ford’s iconic Mustang is appears to be growing old, and back-to-back monthly sales declines to start 2007 have the struggling company a little worried.
The new Mustang, which made its debut in the fall of 2004, has been a bright spot for Ford at a time when bright spots have been few.
So when Mustang sales dropped by 19 percent in January and February compared with the same months in 2006, company officials became a little concerned.
“It’s gotten our attention because when a high volume product like that declines as much as that, we want to see what we might want to do,” said George Pipas, Ford Motor Co.’s top sales analyst.
A drop in Mustang sales should be a worry for Ford. Overall U.S. sales slipped 8 percent last year. The company sold 160,975 Mustangs in 2005 and 166,530 in 2006, big numbers in the midsize sports coupe market, a segment considered to be a niche.
“It did phenomenally well for a while, due in part to (it being) really the only car in the segment,” said David Lucas, vice president of Autodata Corp. “It was exciting. It appealed both to young people and the people who remember what the Mustang used to be.”
Pipas said even Ford was surprised at the car’s staying power when sales continued to grow last year, though it is during the second year full year when sales usually begin to decline for most models.
It could be too soon, however, to write of Ford’s Mustang, Pipas said.
“Two months is hardly a litmus test for the entire year, particularly when the two months aren’t big sales months for anything, let alone two-door sports coupes,” he said.
Still, Ford is working to keep the Mustang fresh with new variations that keep the car exciting, as well gearing up new promotions heading into the spring and summer, traditionally the Mustang’s best sales months, said spokesman Alan Hall.
The company just began shipping new versions of a Shelby GT Mustang, and sometime next year, it plans a dark-green “Bullitt” version reminiscent of the 1968 Fastback Mustang GT that Steve McQueen drove in the classic movie.
“We have other things up our sleeve that we can’t talk about that you’ll see midyear,” said Hall.

Cars with sportier body styles like the Mustang traditionally have shorter life cycles than more conventional cars, said Tom Libby, J.D. Power and Associates’ senior director of industry analysis. The Mustang, because of its name and status, has defied that at times, Libby said.
Still, Ford must do everything it can to protect the Mustang’s turf, he said.
“That model is a core model for them,” he said. “They can’t let this one fall off its perch.”
The company’s other remaining icon, the F-series pickup truck, also has seen its sales drop and is facing heavy competition from General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp.
Competition for the Mustang is only going to get worse when Dodge resurrects the Challenger muscle car in 2008 and Chevrolet comes out with the new Camaro early in 2009.
“When you’ve got the Mustang and the Camaro and the Challenger going head-to-head, the winner is the consumer because it’s going to put a lot of downward pressure on prices,” Libby said.
There’s also pressure on Ford to roll out a new model faster to compete with Chevrolet and Dodge, something all automakers are under pressure to do with intense competition in just about every market.
“They can’t let it languish so it’s in the doldrums when the Camaro comes out,” said Libby. “They have to keep it at the forefront.”
Ford won’t say when a new Mustang will hit showrooms, but Pipas said he wouldn’t be surprised to see it sooner than later.
“There will be another Mustang before too long,” he said. “This is a product where you like to redesign the product and give these loyal buyers something to look at every four years or so, give or take.”

the mustangs are cool during the first MY of each generation...but after a year or so when they start hitting the used car market every redneck in town has one.

who wants to buy a new mustang when wife-beater wearing billy-joe-bob and his wife with summer teeth both drive current gen mustangs that they bought on the used market?

Everybody has one so its not unique anymore.

Plus, when you go with a retro design, you run the risk of it looking dated quicker...

The styling is fine. The car needs more power and a few interior upgrades. Ford should throw a 5.4L 375 hp motor in the car for the GT and add a 6 speed manual. Bring back the Boss with 425hp and an IRS rear. Another option would be a "Club Sport" package with an IRS rear, 14" Brembos, and revised suspension tuning geared towards handling.

I never liked the front styling of the new "retro" mustang. I know it was supposed to mimic the older Mustangs, but it wasn't for me the front styling.

The interior needs better quality plastics and leather plus a few more options. Other than that, what do you expect from a 25-27K car?

I agree...

The interior is the main downfall on this car. Even though I personally hate it, i will even forgive having an solid axle rear end. It gets the job done. That interior is horrible. Make the ineterior better and charge 500 dollars more. Jeez.
it is a great car for that 25k range...just missing some of the details. Ford is behind GM big time in this department. Atleast GM seems to be trying. Ford ...well, i don't know what ford is doing. Naming, renaming cars. Putting outclassed power trains in their bread and butter cars.

IMO the weakest point of the car (looks wise) is the rear quarter panel. Way to thick. And the stock wing is fugly. Duck tail spoiler from the factory would be tits.

Those are 17's and yes they will be going. I put the CDC chin spoiler on about a year and a half ago and love it. I've been thinking of doing a Roush bumper, but I think it might scrape easily.

As for wheels, I like these:

They are 18X9" Ford GT (BBS) replicas.

Launching next spring, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR model features a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts engine output to an estimated 540 horsepower.

In reality an automatic tranny looks correct in a black and gold Shelby with a Hertz sticker. Roughly 90% of the original GT350Hs were built with autos, it is just being true to history.

Does an M3 have a ton a money poured into the interior over a 330, hell no, only basic changes to the interior for the cash you are putting out. No one complains because they would have been happy with that 33k interior, little do they know that they should have expected a hell of a lot more when they end up putting out 50k for their m3.

Actually the E46 interior was significantly upgraded over the junior 3s. The seats and leather alone are a far sight better in look and feel. Case in point 2 years ago my wife and I were looking for a cab to leave at our 2nd home and we went to check out the 330 my wife is an artist/designer and very much into the visual and tactile, after 1 minute in a premium package 330 she got out and said absolutely not, the interior looked and felt so much cheaper than our M she wouldn't even consider it. Though I agree with your major premise while I interpret to mean you don't get the level of interior in an M3 that you would in a 55K+ luxury car with no serious performance intentions due to the fact that much of the premium for a performance version of a car usually goes under the skin. Though I think a better example is a Z06 vs a "standard" Vette. Given the fact that the GT500 is close to if not the best HP per dollar new car for sale in the US it makes no sense to expect a significant interior upgrade, HOWEVER given the premiums the car can fetch the dealers are reaping the profit, had Ford spent more on the interior they could have priced it higher and made more corporate profit though the dealers may not have gotten as big a premium, the former would have made more sense for the troubled company and the consumers would have gotten a better car.

As for the cab we never found anything to suit us both so we moved an old beater to the lake house and I just dumped the money in a new boat... which has a top speed half that of a 330, not a stitch of leather, and could be outrun to 60 by just about any SUV...

A speed-o-meter, when it bends back and touches the roof you have reached terminal velocity...

Exactly, however the speed-o-meter option alone does not bend forward, it only returns vertical and stops, to gain the de-speed-o-meter function one must buy the "vintage gauge package" which allows you to keep up with pad performance.

Seriously I think they hit the nail on the head, growing up building late 60's Stangs, most Shelby clones, these KRs remind me most of their namesake. Although, I am a fan of all of the new era Mustangs this is the first one I would actually spend my money on if I was in the market. Given the numbers being built and the fact many (most?) will be hermetically sealed for Barrett-Jackson 2037 it would actually be quite rare to see on the road, much more rare than a lot of serious company like 911 TTs, Z06s, M3/5/6 etc. If it just had an IRS I might break into the "toy" account and pick one up, but would immediately give the auction crowd fits by modding the suspension and brakes and shaving 100 pounds or so of useless crap, given its power it could be a pretty capable car.

40 more hp? Umm, you can get 50 or more hp just by adding a K&N CAI to the current GT500. That's how restrictive the stock airbox is. In its current form Ford is crap.

idk this car might actually sell. I dont know of any other car with anywhere NEAR 540hp for under $40k!! but its the same huge plastic heavy pos TORDed car...idk we'll have to see how the breaks and suspension really perform as the interior will probably be decent looking. i make fun of basic vettes with their tiny ass breaks so who knows we'll have to wait and see

Under $40k? The standard GT500 bases at like $41k. The KR will most likely be in the mid $50ks.

They are only building a 1k of them. Based on what dealers are still getting for standard GT500s. Look for dealers getting no less than around $30k over MSRP, if not more for the KR.

Press release...

* New convertible version of the Ford Shelby GT available beginning this summer
* New signature Vista Blue exterior with Shelby GT Silver stripes
* Production of 2008 Shelby GT aimed at 2,300 to assure exclusivity for collectors
* Ford Mustang is America’s top-selling convertible

DEARBORN, Mich., June 13, 2007 – The magic duo of Ford Mustang and Carroll Shelby bring open-air excitement to the road for the 2008 model year as the Ford Shelby GT returns with a new convertible body style and a new standard color combination. Like all Shelby Mustang models, production will be limited to assure exclusivity for collectors. The 2008 Shelby GT will be available in coupe and convertible from select Ford dealers beginning in August 2007.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT convertible will be formally introduced to Shelby and Ford enthusiasts at the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet, which opens today in Tulsa, Okla.

“The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first,” said Carroll Shelby. “Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that’s tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don’t will be left behind staring at its tailpipes.”

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing joined forces to create a retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe called the Shelby GT. Fewer than 6,000 total 2007 Shelby GTs were built and were only available in Performance White or Black.

For 2008, the highly-coveted Shelby GT is available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible.

“The Mustang convertible is the number one selling convertible in the U.S.,” states Robert Parker, Ford Division Car Marketing Manager. “Since t he Mustang program never stands still, we wanted to continue offering consumers what they want, and they told us it was a Ford Mustang Shelby GT convertible. ”

Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide.

“The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year,” said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. “The enormous response to the Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008.”

Every Shelby GT is built to perform and is the result of extensive development. Aerodynamics were key to sculpting the powerful, unique front fascia with aggressive lower air dam. The hood scoop comes directly from the famed Shelby Cobra roadster while unique side scoops are positioned just before the rear wheel arches. The rear fascia frames dual exhaust tips and a Shelby badge is on the trunk lid.

“The partnership between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustang’s ever built,” said Jamie Allison, manager of the Ford Racing Performance Group. “Ford Racing has a full line of performance parts for Mustang enthusiasts. The Shelby GT convertible is another example of how working together, Shelby and Ford Racing are developing, producing and delivering niche performance Mustangs directly to the customer.”

Under the hood, the engine is upgraded with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Package to increase output of the 4.6-liter V-8 to 319 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. A high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. Shelby GT comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission featuring a Hurst short-throw shifter for precise shift action. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The balanced package includes a Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, unique sway bars and a 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for improved off-the-line acceleration. The overall ride height was dropped to reduce body roll while a front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure.

The 2008 models will sport 18-inch polished wheels with high-performance P235/50ZR18 BF Goodrich gForce tires to maximize the upgrades. Like all Mustang convertibles, each drop top will have supplemental bracing to give the car additional stiffness and the Shelby team will add a stylish light bar.

“The Shelby GT is for drivers,” says Boylan. “We enhanced the motor, the chassis and other bits to make it a fun, balanced car that is equally at home on the street or track. It’s easy to drive, very fast and offers great value for the price.”

Approximately 2,300 2008 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built, available with manual or automatic transmission. Each car will feature an authentication plate on the center dashboard, as well as a matching tag under the hood for documentation in a forthcoming registry. Shelby Automobiles production is scheduled to begin in August 2007.

aren't covertibles weighted down for safety reasons? If so... I'd rather have the hardtop...

2008 Mustang Bullitt

Ford Introduces 2008 Mustang Bullitt

When the current Mustang was under development, Ford engineers used a DVD of the Movie Bullitt, which featured a chase between a green 1968 Mustang with a 390-cid V8 and a black 1968 Charger with a 383 through the streets of San Francisco, to tune the new car's exhaust note.

After the Boss Mustang, Giugiaro Mustang, the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang, the California Special Mustang, the Stampede Edition Mustang, the Dale Jarrett Mustang, the Road Rally Edition Mustang, the FR500S Mustang, the Foose "Unique" Edition Mustang and the Warriors in Pink Special Edition Mustang, Ford has finally released the special edition that people give a damn about: The Mustang Bullitt.

The Mustang Bullitt features Ford's familiar 4.6-liter V8, here tuned to 315 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque; a modified suspension that improves handling over the GT without compromising ride quality; and a new exterior color - Dark Highland Green - recalls the green Mustang used in the film. It also comes with carbon-metallic front brake pads, a strut tower brace, charcoal-finished 18-inch Bullitt wheels, a black interior with charcoal leather seats, and satin-aluminum interior accents.

Ford will build 7700 copies of the Mustang Bullitt, each of which carries an MSRP of $31,075.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6 — Four decades after hitting the big screen and redefining the on-screen car chase, the Ford Mustang Bullitt returns to the streets in 2008, blending the best Mustang ever with the latest Ford Racing technology.

This modern classic delivers a balance of power and performance, thanks to special chassis and suspension tweaks as well as the 315 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque that Bullitt delivers through its 4.6-liter V-8 engine.

“The 2008 Mustang Bullitt embodies the true spirit of the 1968 movie car,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Like the original Bullitt, this car dials the driving dynamics up a notch for Mustang enthusiasts who love the performance, handling and the sweet sound of Ford power that only Mustang can deliver.”

The 2008 Bullitt arrives in dealers early next year, with a starting MSRP of $31,075 (including destination and delivery) and limited production of 7,700 units for the U.S. and Canada.

The launch of the limited edition 2008 Mustang Bullitt coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of the Warner Bros. Pictures film that gave the original car its name. In the movie, legendary actor Steve McQueen drove a Dark Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT that gained cult status among Mustang enthusiasts, thanks to a seven-minute scene that film and car buffs believe defined the modern movie car chase.

Bullitt Chassis Delivers a Balance of Performance and ComfortFord engineers modified the 2008 Mustang Bullitt’s chassis and suspension to fine-tune handling and ensure the extra horsepower and torque from the 4.6-liter V-8 is put to good use. The live rear axle uses a unique 3.73:1 gear that helps launch the Bullitt with vigor.

Stock Mustang GT shocks and struts were swapped out for new units that allowed engineers to dial in a more aggressive driving dynamic while still maintaining the outstanding ride and balance of the base Mustang GT. A tower-to-tower brace designed specifically for the Bullitt lends additional torsional and lateral stiffness to the chassis for improved cornering and holds a unique serial number for each Bullitt.

“The 2008 Mustang Bullitt delivers balanced performance,” said Paul Randle, chief engineer. “Comfort is not compromised for performance. Performance is on demand. You can easily take Bullitt from the track to the street and back onto the track with confidence.”

The brakes also have been improved versus the base Mustang GT’s. More aggressive front pads were developed specifically for Bullitt and improve fade resistance and pedal feel.

The 2008 Mustang Bullitt wears unique cast-aluminum Euroflange wheels, offering a modern twist on the original movie car. The Dark Argent Gray spokes feature a satin finish, while a bright-machined lip completes the look. Calipers are colored to match the wheel. The wheels are wrapped in the same P235/50ZR 18 BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDWS tires used on Mustangs at the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

Powered by Ford RacingBullitt packs firepower under the hood. The 4.6-liter, 3-valve V-8 delivers 315 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 325 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm.

Engine calibration is designed to increase throttle response for a snappier acceleration feel. The redline has been boosted by 250 rpm to 6,500, with top-end speed bumped to 151 miles-per-hour. Gears are selected via a Tremac 5-speed manual transmission, and the shifter is topped with a polished aluminum shift ball designed specifically for the 2008 Bullitt.

The car features the first use of an open-element air filter in a factory-produced, fuel-injected Mustang. Inspired by Ford Racing, the intake is tucked neatly behind the driver side headlamp, mounted in an air box that was tooled up specifically for the Mustang. The hood liner was extensively modified to provide a full seal to the air box, ensuring that the engine is fed a steady diet of cooler air.

“Colder air reduces intake losses,” said Randle. “The new cold-air intake has shown a reduction in rise over ambient temperature from 50 degrees down to 17 degrees Fahrenheit. That equates to more horsepower and more torque in all driving conditions.”

Engine performance is further enhanced through the use of an innovative adaptive spark ignition system, new for the 2008 Mustang. The system can sense, within a few seconds, what type of fuel is being injected into the motor and adjusts the spark to provide maximum torque at any given speed — and as much as 10 pounds-feet more between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm.

Bullitt can run on either premium or regular fuel. Ford recommends premium fuel for optimum performance, but the adaptive spark ignition will adjust the spark to burn regular fuel without damaging the engine.

“With all the improvements we’ve made to the engine and the taller 3.73-to-1 rear gear, the Bullitt will plant you firmly in the driver’s seat when you stand on the throttle. We’ve seen zero to 60 times drop by up to three tenths of a second,” said Randle. “There’s also plenty of power on tap at any speed. The car definitely feels lighter on its feet, and it is.”

The custom-designed exhaust system continues Mustang’s traditional use of a true dual-exhaust system with a new H-pipe specifically developed for Bullitt. The all-new mufflers, featuring larger 3.5-inch chrome tips (versus the 3-inch tips on the standard Mustang GT) are tuned to minimize backpressure, maximize horsepower and provide the Bullitt with its powerful exhaust note.

“We wanted to get the exhaust note as close to the original movie car as possible, so we based it on a digitally mastered DVD,” said Randle. “We wanted something that would rumble your heart, literally buzz you — and the Bullitt team delivered.”

Capturing the Bullitt’s Undercover Look The original 1968 Mustang’s stealth-like appearance wasn’t necessarily intentional. In typical Hollywood fashion, the movie crew removed all exterior badges and logos from the car — including the iconic pony badge on the grille.

The 2008 Mustang Bullitt calls back the original movie car in painstaking detail — right down to the dark green paint and lack of exterior badges, scoops and spoilers. The only visible identification is the word “Bullitt” dropped into a gun-sight graphic in the center of the faux gas cap on the decklid.

“The 2008 Mustang Bullitt, like the movie car, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Doug Gaffka, chief designer. “Mustang is — and always has been — such an icon that it’s recognizable without the badges. But Bullitt’s clean exterior doesn’t give away the Ford Racing-inspired power and performance lurking under its skin.”

The new Bullitt wears a close match to the movie car’s 1968 Highland Green paint, officially called Dark Highland Green. This distinctive color has only graced one other Mustang, the 2001 Mustang Bullitt. Gaffka assures Bullitt enthusiasts that the color will remain an exclusive Mustang Bullitt color. Non-purists can opt for only one other color — black.

The Mustang Bullitt uses the standard Mustang GT’s front fascia. A new black-mesh grille is devoid of the standard chrome pony and is accented by a satin aluminum strip that represents the chrome grille surround on the 1968 car. The rear fascia also is shared with the standard Mustang GT and houses Bullitt’s unique dual exhaust tips. Dark Argent Gray painted brake calipers closely match the wheel spokes, while staying true to the original.

Bullitt Interior Delivers Comfort with a PurposeThe interior is pure Mustang Bullitt, understated and dressed in Charcoal Black leather and Satin metallic trim. The centerpiece of the interior is the hand-machined, aluminum swirl dash panel appliqué.

“The machined appliqué differentiates the Bullitt from any other Mustang in the line-up,” said Gaffka. “It’s also perfect for the Bullitt. The graphic presentation brings back the feel of the ‘60s while still staying true to the Mustang’s modern interior design.”

Satin aluminum bezels circle the air vents and gauges, complementing a satin aluminum shift ball that replaces the standard leather-wrapped shifter on the Mustang GT. The pedals wear race-inspired aluminum covers that further reinforce Bullitt’s performance intentions. The interior is graphically clean. The only identifying marks visible inside Bullitt are the logo and gun-sight graphic mounted in the center of the leather-wrapped steering wheel and the word “Bullitt” embossed into the metal sill plates.

The Dark Charcoal leather seats pick up the diamond perforation inserts from the base Mustang GT. The seats are patterned after those in the Shelby GT500 providing added lumbar and bolster support. The seats are constructed using the new soy-based foam developed by Ford and introduced on the 2008 Mustang. The soy foam, made up of 24 percent renewable content, is produced through a process that requires less energy and emits less CO2.
