Good for them.....hopefully they will follow their mantra "Bold Moves"...and make it bad ass, put nice things on it without it being water down....then it could be nice step in revamping their line up.

Somehow the words Mustang and sedan shouldn't go together. It's just like saying Chevy is going to put out a Corvette sedan. On the other hand, Dodge did come out with a 4 dr Dodge Charger.

I don't like the idea of "cheapening" the mustangs image. The mustang is, an always has been, a coupe. If Ford can't come out with decent ideas for new vehicles other then to churn out bastardize versions of a current model, then they need to clean house at their design center
They sold over 3.17 million [1] Pintos, so I wouldn't call the Pinto a bad idea. Ford still sold over 200K a year of 'em even after they started exploding
They sold 1,107,718 [2] Mustang II's from 1974-1978, which isn't exactly chump change either.
Anytime you can sell 100,000 of any model per year, you've got a winner on your hands.
At it's height, Ford sold more Pinto's per year then Honda Accords were sold last year...

Looks like the retail version of the Shelby GT-H will be on sale in Janurary 2007. I just don't know if the Shelby GT is going to be worth the $8K extra over the regular Mustang GT.

Ford Handling Pack, Ford Power Pack, 18 inch wheels, exhaust, strutbar and short shifter are what's added along with Shelby styling modifications are not so easily replicated.
My guess is that alot of people will pay the $8K, just so that they can buy a mustang with a CSX number on it. Rumors say around 10,000 will be made.

Back then the Japanese weren't even thought to be worth consideration by die-hard "Buy American" folks. So it wasn't really much of a contest.

That was uncalled for...
Im assuming its going to be in DIRECT competition with the Charger and Magnum. They've got Dodge in the cross hairs with these, then Chevy in it's cross hairs with the Giugiaro Concept Mustang.
Looks like Ford is using the Mustang as its attack weapon.

This is not to be confused with the 500hp Shelby GT500.

That wagon would be a much better answer to most than an Explorer. Hey, wagon is just as bad a word as SUV these days, so who knows. Call it a CUV and it will sell.

Ford will not be building a sedan or wagon version of the Mustang, the company said in a statement to the press today. "Mustang is an icon and will continue in its current form: a unique, two-door, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 performance car," the statement read. Ford didn't rule out building retro sedans or wagons, but made it clear they would not bear the Mustang name.
Ford also announced it will reveal a new Lincoln rear-wheel-drive sedan concept at the Detroit auto show in January called "The Interceptor." It is "based on the Mustang's rear-wheel-drive architecture but it is not a Mustang," Ford said. Back in March, Newsweek reported Ford was working on a retro "rear-wheel-drive family car based on the Mustang that's coming at the end of the decade."
Rumors began this week when Autocar and AutoWeek reported Ford was readying four- and five-door versions of the Mustang alongside the sixth-generation Mustang coupe for 2011. The reports also said Ford Australia was developing a new rear-wheel-drive platform for a variety of future Fords — a rumor that was shot down by spokesman Sinead McAlary.

First Shelby GT rolls out of Vegas shop - - by Marty Padgett - Source: The Car Connection
The first Ford Mustang Shelby GT is due to leave the Shelby garage in Las Vegas today, headed for showrooms with a $36,970 price tag and almost certain unavailability at that price.
The first car, Ford says, will wear CSM No. 07SGT0001 and will be the third in the latest clutch of Shelby vehicles to come from the companies. The others are the Shelby GT-H, the Hertz rental version, and the Shelby GT500.
The first GT will be auctioned at next month's Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. The proceeds will benefit the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. Early in 2006 a Shelby GT500 went for auction at Barrett-Jackson for $600,000.
"I couldn't be more excited to see production up and running on a new Shelby Mustang," says Carroll Shelby, CEO and Chairman of Shelby Automobiles, Inc. "The new Shelby GT is a great addition to the Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT-H, and it will only further the lead that Mustang has in the coming muscle car wars."

Does an M3 have a ton a money poured into the interior over a 330, hell no, only basic changes to the interior for the cash you are putting out. No one complains because they would have been happy with that 33k interior, little do they know that they should have expected a hell of a lot more when they end up putting out 50k for their m3.

If he dies, Ford most likely owns rights to his name, so they will most likely no longer have to waste their time with insight from a muscle car builder from that era. They will just do what ever the hell they want.

$37K !! That's like 10K over the Mustang GT... I thought it was only going to be 8K.
I'm sure alot of collectors with free cash will plunk down the money, but I don't think you can recreate the value of the originals. The orignals where driven hard and put away wet, while alot of these will be put into plastic bubbles and driven very seldomly. Gonna be alot more of the new Shelby GT's surviving in decent condition meaning that prices will never really be that of a true collectible.
I'm guessing that people will make clones, just adding the power pack, handing pack, strutbar, rims and exhaust to a stock mustang GT and forget about the non-fuctional hoodscoop (lame), and the Shelby interior do dads...

Spied: 2009 Ford Mustang
Spied: 2009 Ford Mustang
http://www.leftlanenews.com/2007/01/...-ford-mustang/
Ford has begun testing prototypes for its 2009 Mustang, which appears to be destined for a serious mid-cycle makeover. Although photographers had only seconds for a drive-by photo-blitz, spies say the first word that came to mind was "Giugiaro." After analyzing the photos, it seems that that first impression may have been justified.
Putting these spy shots up next to pix of the Giugiaro Mustang concept that originally debuted at the LA Auto Show, there are some definite similairities between the front-clips of these two cars. The hoodline on this prototype shares the graceful arc of the Italian-inspired show car, and a similar wheel arch appears to reside beneath the camouflage. A sharp, angled character line also appears to be visible on the prototype's front bumper, and its angle and placement matches the Giugiaro concept's nose detail exactly.
A Giugiaro adaptation of the Mustang would seem more at home at a venue like the Geneva Motor Show — Italdesign's usual stomping grounds — so the fact that it debuted in LA and is currently gracing the Ford display at auto show in Detroit has raised some eyebrows, and has begun rumors that the show car's cues might just be on tap for the next-gen Mustang. Those rumblings now appear to have plenty of merit behind them. Gallery after the jump…

Some dude
I guess Ford really thinks the Camaro and Challenger are going to kill Mustang sales in '09. And since they don't have a lot of other things going for them, they need the Mustang to keep selling well.

That said, I think the current Mustang is the best looking Mustang to day and looks better than the Camaro and Challenger concepts (opinions) and its mid-$20k price really makes it a performance value that is hard to beat.
