NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Co. has rolled out a capless replacement for the gas cap on its high-end Ford GT sports car and will use it on the 2008 Lincoln MKS full-size car, according to reports in The Detroit News and The Houston Chronicle.

The flap means the consumer who won't have to remember to replace the cap and it also prevents gas fumes from entering the environment, according to the newspapers.
The new cap was developed by Ford for its NASCAR racing cars, The Houston Chronicle reported.
Ford and DaimlerChrysler also plan to introduce bright yellow gas caps to cars that run on E85, the ethanol, gas mix, The News reported.

Im sure there will be a locking lid to it, not like the hole will be visible from the outside of the car.

I wondered when the days of the gas cap would be dated. No more forgetting to put it back on, no one stealing it, etc. But how goes the durability of this 'flap'? NASCAR cars are stripped apart after each race, aren't they? And the Ford GT is too new a car (and rarely refueled since it's a track car) to know how durable this 'new' technology is.
What happened to the days of the lock on the gas cap to prevent people from pouring sugar into the fuel line?
