^ in a time of high gas prices and an American market needing the best in fuel econ. Unlike those days, today we have low-displacement, high MPG I4s too.

Challenger Pics Break Out from Dodge - - Source: The Car Connection
Dodge's Challenger concept isn't due to be shown publicly until next week - but pictures of the two-door musclecar concept have hit the Web a full week early. The concept sits four inches shorter than the Dodge Charger sedan upon which it's based, but the proportions are similar to those of the original 1970 Challenger - making the new concept a much larger vehicle than today's Mustang. The concept sports a 425-hp, 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 and a six-speed manual transmission. So outfitted, Chrysler says the new Challenger could hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph. Stay tuned for more on the Challenger, the Ford Shelby GT500, and the Chevrolet Camaro concept as the Detroit show goes retro next week.

Dodge unveils Challenger - - Source: Automotive News / January 4, 2006 - 6:00 am

Unhappy with getting sand kicked in their faces by the redesigned, blast-from-the-past Ford Mustang, Dodge designers opened the vault and took a long look at the 1970 Challenger. The result: The Challenger concept that will be rolled out next week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Under the skin of this new Challenger is a shortened version of the rear-drive LX platform used for the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum/Charger. Under the hood? What else but a Hemi V-8 — this one a 6.1-liter unit that cranks out 425 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque. All that power is channeled to the rear tires through a six-speed manual transmission.
The Dodge boys estimate that the Challenger's powertrain would propel the four-seat coupe from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and that the speed would top out at about 174 mph.
If the concept is a hit, and the corporate chieftains give it the green light, a production Challenger could be chewing up the asphalt by 2009.

hmm...my dad had a '70 Challenger R/T when he was 18. Later on in life when he was around 32, he had an '84 corvette. When the new 'vette came out, I told him about it...and now he's got one, and loves it. I wonder if when the Challenger comes out, if he'll get it?

Interesting look, I'm suprised they claim 174mph with that face though. The aerodynamics on the new retro-dodges look about as good as a typical brick. It may have enough muscle to get there, but I wouldn't want to be in the car

The more I look at this thing the better it looks. The side profile actually look more like a Barracuda than a Challenger.
I'm still not so sure about the retro interior. Something more contemporary like a GTO interior would seem more appropriate.

Lots of things can happen between now and predicted launch. As usual with far off concepts look for lots of things to change even the car does make it to production.
