September 2003
Delphi Corp., the former General Motors auto-component supplier, has developed a new kind of disc brake which, it says, could help eliminate problems with existing brake systems for light trucks, sport-utility vehicles and high-powered cars.
The new system replaces a single large brake disc with two smaller ones, which Delphi estimates creates 1.7 times the stopping power of a conventional single-disc system.
Delphi claims that the new brake is also smaller, lighter and requires less hydraulic power to generate its stopping power than current single-disc brakes.
Delphi says it has been demonstrating its new brake on an SUV and a sedan, but doesn't expect the brake to emerge on a production vehicle until 2006.
