CL65....Crazy
Anybody that sais money doesn't make you happy, is full of shit.
CL 65 AMG: 1000 Newton metres of torque already available at 2000 rpm
Mercedes-AMG is the creator of yet another automotive masterpiece which celebrates its world premiere in Geneva. The new CL 65 AMG continues the successful twelve-cylinder tradition of Mercedes-AMG with an up-to-date V12 power unit which exhibits stunning performance characteristics. Thanks to twin turbocharging this engine develops 450 kW/612 hp and makes a remarkable 1000 Newton metres of torque available from 2000 rpm. This makes the CL 65 AMG the most powerful AMG model to date.
Thanks to this muscular AMG 12-cylinder powerpack the Coupé matches the performance of thoroughbred sports cars: from standstill the CL 65 AMG accelerates to 100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds (provisional figure). Its maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The new AMG engine is based on the 12-cylinder unit of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In addition to an increase in displacement from 5513 to 5980 cubic centimetres, numerous other modifications are responsible for the output and torque increase in the new CL 65 AMG. For example the AMG engineers have increased ther cylinder bore from 82 to 82.6 millimetres, lengthened the stroke of the crankshaft by six millimetres to 93 millimetres and increased the charge pressure of the turbochargers to a maximum of 1.5 bar. In addition they have used forged pistons, main and big-end bearings made from extremely high temperature and pressure-resistant materials and enlarged the apertures in the injection nozzles to achieve a higher fuel flow. Power is transferred by a five-speed automatic transmission with the SPEEDSHIFT function and steering-wheel gearshift. The exceptional torque of the V12 is always safely under control, thanks to modifications to various transmission components, the rear axle differential, the drive shafts and the wheel carriers.
Like all models in the CL-Class the new CL 65 AMG is fitted as standard with the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, whose spring struts have been configured for greater stiffness in the high-performance Coupé.

Burn some dust here
Unbelievable looking
But I wouldnt pay $200g+ for this car when it is (according to the article) .2 faster in the 60 than a CL55 and outside the rims, the cars is identical to the 55. When all this came out I figured it would at least be under 4 in the 60 with that much power. Curious to see this engine in the SL.

Honestly, if you go to the Benz forum for the SL55, CL55, etc......look at some of the cars those guys have. They have Ferraris, Porsche Turbos, Range Rovers, all sorts of shit (along with their AMG Benz).
Most people who buy $125k+ MBs have other cars (Sports cars, SUVs, etc).
The over $150k crowd, is a very exclusive club, the $150k mark is where there is a "huge" % drop off of buyers.
Basically, anybody that has $180-$200k to drop on a crazy CL Benz can afford other cars.

CL 65 AMG unveiled at Geneva
I have posted before about Mercedes' 55AMG cars not being powerful enough. The Geneva auto show is happening as we...write...and Mercedes has presented the CL65 AMG car.
They enlarged the engine from 5.5 to 6.0 liters and the supercharger boost to 2.5 bars! That is 29.4 psi
Power is now 612 HP and torque is 1000 Nm at 2000 rpm !!!
With a 5 speed automatic tranny this thing will do 0-62mpg in 4.5 seconds. Probably 4.3 seconds the 0-60 mph.
Wheels are 19 inches large.

Going as fast as a Z06 on the straight, with an automatic tranny in a Mercedes, the way a Mercedes accelerates (like a super-luxo coupe that is), should be an interesting feeling.

This is not new news but the photos are cool.
612 hp 12-cylinder in the new CL 65 AMG
World premiere in the CL model series at the 73rd Geneva International Motor Show 2003 in Switzerland
Stuttgart -- The CL65AMG shares the limelight with three more new product offerings from the SLK and E-Class model series as well as the CLK-Class Cabriolet on the Mercedes-Benz stand at this year's Geneva International Motor Show.
CL 65 AMG: 1000 newton metres of torque from just 2000 rpm
Geneva is also the scene of the world premiere of another automotive masterpiece from Mercedes-Benz: the new CL 65 AMG continues the successful tradition of twelve-cylinder engines from Mercedes-AMG with a state-of-the-art V12 power plant which delivers extraordinarily impressive performance. Thanks to biturbo-charging, the engine develops 450 kW/612 hp and provides a massive 1000 newton metres of torque from 2000 rpm, making the CL 65 AMG the most powerful AMG model to date.
The powerful AMG twelve-cylinder engine gives the Coupé the performance characteristics of a thoroughbred sports car: the CL 65 AMG accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h ((0-62.1 mph)) in only 4.5 seconds (provisional figure); its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h ((155 mph)).
The AMG engine is based on the newly developed twelve-cylinder unit from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The increase in the displacement from 5513 to 5980 cc is just one of many measures responsible for the enhanced performance and torque available in the CL 65 AMG. Examples of the modifications made by the AMG engineers include enlargement of the cylinder bore from 82 to 82.6 millimetres, extension of the crankshaft stroke by six millimetres to 93 mm, and an increase in the maximum charge pressure delivered by the turbocharger to 1.5 bar. Further-more, as well as using forged pistons, and main and big-end bearings made from material with exceptional resistance to temperature and pressure, they increased the size of the openings in the injection valves in order to obtain higher fuel throughput.
Power is transmitted by a five-speed automatic transmission with SPEEDSHIFT and steering-wheel-mounted gearshift controls. Various transmission components, the rear differential, the drive shafts and the hub carriers have been optimised to ensure safe and reliable handling of the exceptionally high torque developed by the V12 engine. Like all the other CL-Class models, the new CL 65 AMG is equipped as standard with the Active Body Control (ABC) active suspension system, the only difference being that the spring struts in the high-performance Coupé are set up for a somewhat firmer response.

As one can see from the below photo which is part of the above one DaimlerChrysler still has severe quality problems - the hood and the fender do not match at all and also the hood and the front bumper are not properly aligned...
Remember: We are talking "Mercedes" here - not to mention the car will cost more than 100.000 Euro.
