Slow Chevy SSR sales to idle 650 at Craft Centre
Slow SSR sales to idle 650 at Craft Centre, supplier
Latest shutdown to keep workers off for 6 weeks
By Barbara Wieland
Lansing State Journal
Continuing slow sales of the Chevrolet SSR are idling 400 workers at General Motors Corp.'s Lansing Craft Centre for six weeks.
That also will cause the layoffs of 250 more workers at a plant that supplies SSR components.
The Craft Centre is down to allow inventory of the $39,340 roadster to shrink to meet demand, said GM spokeswoman Linda Ellis. "The schedule adjustment is part of our continued efforts to manage SSR inventories," she said.
Sluggish sales of the SSR are among a myriad of problems with which GM has grappled in the past year. Last week, the automaker reported it lost $1.6 billion in the third quarter.
Ellis said the Craft Centre closings started Monday.
Dan Fairbanks, president of United Auto Workers Local 1618, said workers will return to their jobs Dec. 5.
"We're worried, obviously, but we're not worried about them closing the plant," Fairbanks said. "We'd much rather be working."
Including the current downtime, the plant will have been closed 30 weeks so far this year.
Sales of the SSR have fallen 6.9 percent so far this year, from 7,240 in the first months of 2004 to 6,743 units so far this year, according to Automotive News. As of Oct. 1, there were 3,400 SSRs in stock, enough to supply the vehicles to buyers for the next 174 days.
The downtime reverberates throughout the automotive community.
American Specialty Cars Inc., which makes several subassemblies for the SSR, also will be hurt by the downtime. Its 250 workers in the Lansing area also will be idled during those weeks.
"Whenever their plant goes down, we go down," said ASC spokesman Tim Yost.

SSR production ends
General Motors' Lansing (Mich.) Craft Centre produced its last Chevrolet SSR on Friday, March 17. An estimated 24,150 SSRs were built during the three-year production run.
The plant built its first vehicle, the Buick Reatta, in 1987. The Cadillac Eldorado, Chevrolet Cavalier convertible and Pontiac Sunfire convertible also have been built there. Another notable vehicle built at the plant was GM's electric car, the EV1. -Automotive News

The sizzle in the Steak
Good move by GM...it just took them three years to figure out the SSR was an overpriced, underpowered niche vehicle.

my wife likes it and she's 22. she really likes the red ones. They had private one for sale about 10-12 miles from my house. she was begging me to go ask how much they wanted. for me it's too "old school look." plus for that kind of cash you can have a GTO. which they are giving to the axe to soon.
