Getting closer: Corvette C6 spotted testing on Germany’s Nurburgring

By AUTOWEEK

(All photos © 2003 John Johnson)
When last we spied Chevrolet’s sixth-generation Corvette, the photographs told us the 2005 model C6 arriving in fall 2004 would be fairly similar to the current model, with a few notable exceptions.

These shots, taken as General Motors engineers began the C6’s performance shakedown on Germany’s Nurburgring, confirm what we said then and add some more of the picture. As we reported, the next Vette will eschew hideaway headlamps for the first time since they were introduced on the 1963 Stingray, instead opting for more aerodynamic fixed position projector beam pods.

We also note a sharper edge along the C6’s front fenders than previously seen, along with a creased center roofline that hints at a racy double-bubble effect. Look for the production Corvette’s debut at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

Looks like they've shortened the front and rear overhangs a bit. That was my biggest beef with the old car.

I like how the rear glass is so dramatically tapered in the back.

I'm willing to reserve lynching for the time being.

Not necessarily so. Take a look at say a Buick Park Ave Ultra (supercharged 3.8L OHV V6) and compare it to a Toyota Avalon. Both have a similar size , weight (buick is larger) but the Buick is faster and gets slightly better highway mileage. Same thing is true when comparing an Olds Intrigue to a Toyota Camry. The bigger pushrod V6 puts out same hp & gets better hiway mileage. Of course the sound of a dohc engine is much better than that of an OHV design.

When were talking about 4s and 6s, yeah...but I love the growl of a pushrod V8...

These photos have been floating around the net but I doubt it is the real car.

425HP from the base model. The Z06 was the best bang for the buck car on the planet, this should raise the bar even higher. The next Z06 with 500+ HP will be a Viper eater. Not to mention the awesome handling of the C5 will only be improved with the C6.

This is the only GM car I like, oh and the new GTO, have you seen how sweet that GTO's interior is?

I agree...those Corvettes are wonderful. Super-powerful and good handling (near super-car) for under $40K.

Looks good to me. Anyone else notice the flush, plastic covered headlights and the cross-drilled rotors?

Darn, I was hoping that they would make the next corvette a little racier, with smaller proportions... oh well, I guess it's not a bad thing. Yea, it is the best GM car for the price (sub 40 near supercar). Plus, the vette is more refined then the viper, they are in total different catagories.

Car magazine just did a review of the GTO equivalent Holden sold in Europe and the reviews indicate that it's the purest modern interpretation of the muscle car, with insane power with moderate to minimal pwertrain refinement. I would like to at least test drive one. The interior is the best I've seen in a GM car... ever.

Junkster, who was hoping for a throw-back vette...

Actually the GTO is a Holden, not the other way around.

Never said that Holden's product was FROM the GTO.

I don't know how to feel about the GTO, though. The name is kinda sacred and to have some car already in production to be rebadged (from Aussie no less) into the name, it's just all kinda weird. I know the car is great and all, but I wish they would have developed a whole new car for the GTO name.

On lighter note, I like your avatar Lung Fu. Furi Curi was one of my fave Gainex animes.

Junkster, whose a hopeless anime freak.

Can we get a monster "Way to go!" for C_TSX_Go?
Did you take the pix? Nice work.

I like how the fender arches meet the body in a very Stingray-esque way.

Now if they could just design an interior that doesn't look like ass.

Have you seen the interior on the new GTO?. If the Vettes interior is 75% as nice this car is a huge winner.

PS. I'm dissapointed that acura-tsx.com was'n the first to break the news on this new Vette

I just bought the 3 DVD set. My Netflix is queued with Gasaraki, Neo Ranga, Record of Lodoss. In my personal collection I also have the Cowboy Bebop and N.G.Evangelion series plus the movies.

My TV watching as of late has included Banner of the Stars I (sequel to Crest of the Stars) on Anime Unleashed/Tech TV.

It's sad isn't it?
