Chevrolet beats Ford in car-truck sales
The Impossible Dream? Chevrolet's third-quarter comeback slashes Ford's car-truck sales lead - - - By JOHN K. TEAHEN JR. | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek
Chevrolet dreamed the impossible dream. On Dec. 31, that dream may come true.
When Chevy initiated its "American Revolution" marketing program this year, one of its announced goals was to regain first place in car-truck sales. Chevrolet hasn't been the leader since 1986.
Colleagues smiled politely when Chevy talked about unseating Ford. In the auto business, you don't laugh outright at Chevrolet, but a polite smile is permitted if Chevy makes a preposterous statement.
Chevy's dream of being No. 1 was pretty preposterous. After all, in the last 10 years, Ford's winning margin has never been less than 200,000 units. In 1998, 1999 and 2000, Ford won by more than 800,000. Last year, it was 243,992. How was Chevrolet going to overcome deficits like that?
But pay attention. Going into October, Chevy was only 8,303 sales behind Ford for this year.
No way, Chevrolet
For the first six months of this year, there was no way Chevy was going to challenge Ford. Ford led by 67,567 after three months and lengthened its margin to 107,157 at midyear. Ford outsold Chevrolet in every one of those six months.
Then came the third quarter. Chevy loved it. Ford didn't. By the end of August, Chevy was down only 53,953, and in September, Chevy blew Ford out of the water, winning by an astonishing 45,650 sales. By Sept. 30, Chevrolet had reduced Ford's year-to-date advantage to 8,303 vehicles.
It would take a brave person to predict the year's outcome in print, but keep this in mind: Chevrolet is on a roll; Ford is being rolled.
Chevrolet has done it by a virtual wipeout of Ford in car sales. At this time a year ago, Ford had sold 8,000 more cars than Chevy. Now, Chevy has sold 165,000 more than Ford. Ford sits in fourth place in car sales behind Chevrolet, Toyota and Honda.
Ford shuns fleets
Ford car sales are down 14.6 percent this year, and some of that is due to a cutback in fleet sales. Chevrolet car sales are up 13.5 percent, and Chevy is delighted to sell to anyone who wants to buy.
Ford still rules in trucks, a solid 173,000 ahead of Chevy. But last year, Ford was 197,000 ahead at the three-quarter mark.
Put those numbers together. At this time last year, Ford was 205,290 sales ahead of Chevrolet. That edge has shrunk to 8,303.
What's the advantage of being No. 1 in sales? For the brand that has wrested the title from a longtime leader, the benefits are almost incalculable.
If Chevy wins this year, look for an advertising blitz that will spread the "We're No. 1" message to everyone who reads a newspaper, sees a billboard, tunes in a radio or watches TV.

I wonder if they'd be talking about this if Ford had kept up fleet sales....

This is just for name plate bragging rights. While the F-Series does beat the Silverado in sales number, if the tally includes the similar GMC Sierra, GM's total fullsize pickup sales volume would be greater than Ford's.

Sounds like fords doing the right thing and chevy isn't.

Did they forget to mention GM was GIVING CARS AWAY with a truck purchase recently. Yes, I'm not mis-stating that, GM had deals to get a free car with your truck purchase...
They are begging people to take their vehicles... this article explains WHY they did that.
How sad... Chevy is betting on the fact they can hold the lead. If that bet doesn't pay off they are obviously screwed by the sales losses on the free cars.

Not that I would EVER get a pickup truck but, if I did the F150 would be my second choice behind the Nissan Titan. I wouldnt even consider a Chevy for ANYTHING outside of the C5/C6.
Though it'll NEVER happen, Chevy should post a disclaimer on their '#1' claims stating Ford's intentional reduction of fleet sales (although that in itself tends to "inflate" sales numbers).

Chevys ride like crap. Have shitty interior to boot. Not to mention fugly styling IMO.
Chevy has jack to complete with the Dodge SRT10 or the Ford Lightning.
I drove 20+ trucks recently. Toyota's drove the best. Followed by ford and dodge.
Since the BIG trucks all use engines made by 3rd partys (diesels engines I'm talking) it's stupid to compare the engines. However you can compare ride an interior/features. The chevy loses on all but the features...
