That looks weird and cool at the same time. Nice how everything is all cleanly integrated, the push bars are now part of the car instead of looked bolted on, and the lights are on the roof on all sides and in the bumpers.

Reminds me of what one of my professors told me when someone asked, "where do all our tax dollars go?" It goes to all the "cool shit" like this.

What I don't like: No roof lights so you can't tell it's a cop car when it's a few cars back. But then again, I've always thought all cop cars should be easily identifiable...some sort of giant flag or constant strobe or something would be nice...no more blending into traffic.

What's surprising: Suicide doors.

Did they built the techno skin of the car on an existing production car or was the car designed grounds up ?

Agreed!!

But some times a Cop car visuall presence is required, such as to impede speeding and control traffic etc. In such situations just placing a car with the light bar does the job. In these situation turning on the light bar or other strobes are not necessary.

The new charger police cars make it hard enough to tell them apart from normal cars in the dark. The crown vics have a distinctive amber light on the inside of the headlights.

S'more tidbits from Worldcarfans...

Carbon Motors Corporation has unveiled the Carbon 'E7' today. Tagged as the world's first purpose-built law enforcement vehicle, the E7 embarks on a nine city U.S. tour culminating at the 115th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference in San Diego, California where over 15,000 senior law enforcement professionals will gather from all around the world.

The overall concept of the E7 is to move away from retrofitting a standard passenger production vehicle to law enforcement specs, and instead provide a vehicle designed and engineered from the ground up specifically for law enforcement purposes.

With the voluntary input of over 1,700 law enforcement professionals, the vehicle will come fully equipped with technological and design elements including an ergonomically correct cockpit inspired by jet fighters and helicopters, a high powered clean-diesel engine capable of running on biodiesel, integrated external and internal surveillance capabilities, radar, LoJack, an automatic license plate recognition system, radiation and biological threat detectors and 360 degree, highly noticeable built-in LED emergency lighting. In addition, the 'E7' debuts Carbon's proprietary On-board Rapid Command Architecture (ORCA) with a large touch-screen main display and a separate touch screen keyboard providing world-class data communication and human-machine interface.

I read in some car magazine that it wasn't developed with tax dollars. It's a private corporation with police input on what they wanted in a car. It's supposed to be built from scratch with things like 90 degree opening rear doors so it's easier to throw people in back, built in LCD panels into the dash so they don't have to have a laptop poking out of the center, washable rear seats so you can hose out crap. Pretty cool idea to market to law enforcement. There's got to be a large enough market to justify development.

At the end of an RMP's useable life, there isn't always a set plan on how to dispose of the car. Do you strip off the lights and equipment? What do you do with them then? What do you do with the car? Do you sell the car to one place, and the lights to another? Do you have to remove all the markings?

This "turn-key" solution would probably include just returning the car to carbon for some type of credit towards a new vehicle, and the manufacturer would take care of dismantling the vehicle, recycling parts, etc...

Did you read the article I posted that said currently cars cots $25-75,000? And the vast majority of that is due to labor and equipment that must be install after the initial purchase is made. This saves them in labor/equipment costs.

Plus, as stated already, it's made by a private company using input from police officers. In other words... no tax money was spent doing this!

I think it'll be successful just because the current Police car manufacturer won't be producing vehicles for much longer.

But wasn't the 2010 Ford Interceptor supposed to be the same exact concept?

The car seems to still be vaporware but there's an interesting tid-bit in a Sabb related article that says:

BMW Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer has been looking for opportunities to sell components to other manufacturers to boost revenue. BMW, the world’s largest luxury- car maker, agreed in March to supply more than 240,000 six- cylinder diesel engines, cooling systems, and transmissions to Carbon Motors Corp., which is developing a police car for U.S. law enforcement agencies.
That sounds like the X35d drivetrain.

The dream of a purpose-built, fuel-efficient police car may be in jeopardy. The Energy Department has denied the application of an Indiana start-up for a $310 million loan that would have created its advanced police car.

Carbon Motors is pushing a police pursuit car it calls the E7. It says it has over 20,000 reservations from more than 500 law enforcement agencies in all 50 U.S. states, in addition to interest overseas. It says the car's creation would have resulted in 1,550 direct jobs.

Carbon has been waiting for years for the loan under the same program that provoked the outcry about the loan to solar-panel provider Solyndra. That company's financial problems provoked a Republican outcry about wasteful spending by the Obama administration.

An "outraged" Carbon, in a statement, blames DOE for bowing to election-year political pressure in not granting the loan.

"It is clear that this was a political decision in a highly charged, election-year environment," said William Santana Li, chairman and chief executive officer, Carbon Motors. "Carbon Motors simply appears to be the last victim of this political gamesmanship."

Other start-ups that were waiting for DOE loans have also failed. Bright Automotive, which was going to make a fuel-efficient van, just announced it can no longer stay in business without the loan. Aptera, a Southern California-based start-up, failed earlier this year and won't make its unusual pod-like electric car.

Carbon started with good timing. When it applied for its loan, most police agencies depended on Ford's aging Crown Victoria as their standard car. It had little competition. But with the Crown Vic now gone, Ford, Chrysler and General Motors have all stepped up with replacements, making the competition suddenly pretty hot. And the new cars have some of the unique features that Carbon had been promoting for officer comfort, convenience and safety that are unique to police work.

Carbon was going to power its car with a BMW diesel engine to be fuel efficient. But the Detroit Three are making strides there as well, with Ford, for instance, offering turbo-charged engines in its new Taurus-based police car to save gas.

Mostly, it sounds like Carbon, based in Connorsville, Ind., resents being put through so many hoops for no result.

"We spent over 30 months responding to every request made of us by the DOE – many of which were at best challenging and at worst, unnatural," said Li. "During the past year we were in almost daily contact with the DOE staff and were neither advised that our application was coming up short in any way, nor told that there was anything we would need to do in order to finalize the loan that we did not satisfy."

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013...NEWS/130409940

For years, Carbon Motors Corp. has been teasing us -- and the nation's law-enforcement agencies -- with renderings and photos of its purpose-built E7 police cruiser.

Drivers may not have to worry about seeing the E7's aggressive lines in their rearview mirrors any longer. As the New York Times Wheels blog reports, Carbon Motors has vacated its Connersville, Ind. factory space and shut down its website.

Pitched as a modern alternative to the vehicles like the venerable Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, the E7 would have been a radical a departure from old fleet mainstays: It would traded the traditional body-on-frame construction for an aluminum spaceframe structure designed to survive a 75-mph rear impact. Power was to come from a BMW-supplied turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel. Prominent pusher bars and rooftop flashers were to be traded for sleek, integrated alternatives.

But start-up cash proved elusive. Last year, Carbon Motors lost out on a Department of Energy loan that was supposed to help get E7 production off the ground. At the time, the company said it was seeking alternative sources of funding.
