Cadillac STS SAE 100 News

GM Jams High-Tech Gizmos Into Caddy
Detroit Free Press

April 11, 2005

By Mark Phelan

From heated and cooled cup holders to a 505-horsepower supercharged V8 engine, General Motors Corp. and the auto industry's leading suppliers crammed every new technology they could into an experimental Cadillac STS sedan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress this week at Cobo Center in Detroit.

The feature-packed car will be on display today through Thursday at GM's stand toward the rear of the main floor in Cobo Hall.

The SAE expects the annual conference to draw about 35,000 attendees from around the world for technical presentations, business meetings and visits to displays by the auto industry's leading companies.

Unlike the flashy, futuristic looking concept cars common at public auto shows, Cadillac's SAE show car looks a lot like the 2005 STS luxury sedan that went on sale last fall.

Its innovations go much more than skin-deep, as engineers from nearly 40 suppliers and many GM departments spent months developing and testing the one-of-a-kind STS SAE 100, which is the show's keynote vehicle.

"The vehicle integrates many technologies GM is working on," said Al Oppenheiser, GM director of concept vehicle engineering. Some already are in production while many others are coming soon, he said.

The 505-horsepower, 6.0-liter LS2 small-block V8, which generates its prodigious output thanks to a supercharger from Eaton Corp., is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission from GM's Hydra-Matic division and an electronic limited slip differential from English supplier GKN plc. The differential should improve handling and control, chief engineer Andrew Krenz said.

The heated and cooled cup holders between the two front seats come from Tellurex Corp. of Traverse City. They can keep drinks as warm as 120 degrees and as cool as 40 degrees.

High-output electroluminescent wires around the cup holders glow red or blue, respectively, for heating or cooling. Robert Miller, a private consultant in Plymouth, developed the lighted wires.

GM's research indicates that 78 percent of its customers want advanced safety features on their cars, and the STS SAE 100 is brimming with them.

The list includes radar sensors to warn of objects in the driver's blind spot from French supplier Valeo, rear video from Panasonic, sensors to alert the driver if the vehicle leaves its lane from Dutch supplier Mobileye and GM-developed air bags in the front, side air bags for the front and rear seats and the roof.

GM created the car to showcase the new technologies, but a number of them also lead to attractive and unusual exterior features.

The sporty multi-spoke wheels are an ultralight combination of carbon fiber rims and magnesium spokes developed by English supplier Dymag Racing, which supplied the first magnesium wheels for Formula One race cars.

The brakes feature ceramic rotors and multi-piston calipers to reduce weight, extend brake life and improve performance.

Van Buren Township-based Visteon developed the car's LED headlights and fog lights.

Other exterior features include a lightweight carbon fiber hood from Auburn Hills-based Prefix and a power trunk lid from German supplier Hoerbiger.

This is what the current STSV should have been.
