Man those new shifters gots to go. The interior is gorgeous, exterior isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Don't really like the front, though. Think I prefer the current one over that.
What are those sliders (?) on the sides of the 3rd row seats? Can't believe they managed to even fit a 3rd row in there, from the outside it doesn't look like it's much bigger than the current version.

The front is ugly as hell... the rear is tolerable. The interior's nice... especially the dash and center stack is very nice... but ditto on the ugly ass shifter.

The rear really didn't change all that much, so if you liked the rear before......there is no reason not to like it now.
Interior looks great, the shifter whatever.......wouldn't stop me from buying one.

i like it... i would consider getting it with SMG if that became available... maybe on the 4.8is equivilant model...
the rear always looked great so why change it much... interior could be the best yet on these new bimmers... nose will take some getting used to but i like it, it was due for a change...
this car just got on the list of my next cars to consider upgrading to in a year or two...

First official photos, details of BMW's next-gen X5 ute - - Source: Autoweek
We showed you reader spy shots of BMW's second-gen X5 earlier this summer (AW, June 12); now BMW is releasing official photos of the 2007 ute destined to do battle later this year with the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Audi Q7.
Evolutionary exterior styling hides a fully reworked interior boasting an optional third seat row and space for seven-a first for BMW. Engines include a 3.0-liter 272-hp inline six-cylinder and a 4.8-liter 355-hp V8-the latter providing 0-62-mph acceleration in 6.5 seconds.
The update is certainly the most conservative of any recent BMW model, retaining the characteristic sculpted bonnet, deep swage lines running down the flanks and basic silhouette of the current X5. Further clues to the identity of the new model can be found in the head and tail lamps.
Packaging was one of the old X5’s main limitations. Thanks to the new vehicle's extra length and width it now has room for seven, with the seats arranged in a two-plus-three-plus-two layout similar to that employed by Audi with the recently launched Q7 and Volvo with the two-year-old XC90.
The design of the interior follows the theme now established across the BMW lineup with a minimalist appearance and fewer switches than the outgoing model, thanks in part to the addition controversial iDrive multi function controller.
BMW makes no mention of a manual gearbox for the new X5, suggesting the existing six-speed unit may be dropped. Instead, the German car maker has concentrated its engineering efforts at improving its six-speed automatic gearbox from German transmission specialist, ZF. It gains a new torque converter mechanism and fresh software in a move that’s claimed to half shift times and provide smoother operation under full load. It is operated through a new joystick inspired gear lever that, in combination with a new electronic parking brake mechanism, has liberated extra space on the center console for stowage and larger cup holders.
Sitting on a brand new platform, the new X5 runs an updated version of its predecessor’s xDrive permanent four-wheel drive system.
“The main emphasis during development was to reinforce the X5’s reputation as one of the best handling four-wheel drives.” a high level source told AutoWeek, adding. “Studies suggest only ten percent of owners ever venture off-road so we decided there was no need to improve much in this area.”
The suspension retains the same basic MacPherson struts (front) and multi-links (rear) set-up with air springs helping to smooth the ride while providing constant self levelling – a handy feature when heavy loads are aboard or when trailers are hitched up – on upmarket models.

I like to rest my hand on the shift know, you won't be able to do that with the above shifter. The old one was fine and did the same thing, so why reinvent the wheel?
#182
Make changes that are relevant, that improves on a current design. Different for the sake of being different doesn't always work.

I think BMW has that one figured out.

I take it back, it's unfair to say BMW isn't improving on something; they did free up space on the center console by moving the entire shiftgate onto the actual shifter. I still think it's ugly though, and given the option, i'd stick with a more traditional set up.

the shifter looks pretty cool... everyone critiques the technology on these new bimmers, but sometimes i feel all the critics are older and would have issues with the mouse if it were introduced today...
i think the younger generation will embrace it quicker, we just cant afford it yet...

shiftgate isnt traditional enough. go back to the column shifter or push button shifter

I-Drive IMO wasn't an advancement and neither is this. I've used I-Drive extensively and it still isn't the easiest system to use.

Theres always room for improvment but wasnt the Idrive the first to be featured in a passenger car?
Now look at how many variations of that system other companies are using.
Im glad BMW is willing to try somthing different. Im sure if the public doesnt like it then they will improve on it.

there's nothing wrong with advancement and new technology, as long as its executed well.
other companies may be using a system similar to I-drive, but other companies' execution is much better..."thanks, BMW, for giving us the idea, now watch us make a BETTER version!"
