Didn't want to dwell on the RL issue inside an X3 thread, so here's a genuine question about the X3 - is it getting the refreshed 3.0L & 2.5L engines like everything is with this MMC or will it soldier on with the old powerplants?

Now, for the RL.

6.0 to 60mph seems fairly quick and the technology inside is enough to really sway me ... I like Acura's Navi the best and the integration with XM is a really nice feature (along with bluetooth).

Just curious why you never considered it.
Keep in mind, the car is a bday gift for my Mom, and she is a _tiny_ woman - not good for parking situations

The quality of the leather didn't impress me. The interior materials, while nice, were not up to par with the Lexus. The lack of parking sensors and a backup camera is unacceptable on a car this price. The looks are decent, but the Lexus does look more high end. The Acura has a ton of features that beat out the Lexus but the way it's executed, it beats everything except it's main rivals' offerings. If I wanted a 50k sporty car, I'd get the M45. For luxury, I'm getting the GS. Walking the middle path doesn't always produce the best results.

Mainly because the thing is most likely to have a lot more equipment for the same or less price and Acuras interiors have been nothing but great since they introduced the tsx imo..

I agree, I love the Acura TSX/RL interiors, with the new Lexus GS almost as good.

the Audi A3 is 33 fully loaded for a 4-banger. And yes it is a Turbo but still 30K and a competitor for the TSX.

there's more to the price than just the # of cylinders.

I'm not advocating that the TSX is good or bad. Just that you can't say the price is good just because of the # of cylinders.

I am glad they decided to remove all the plastic off the bumpers. I can't believe they released it like that when it came out! I also hope they spruce up the interior

BMW making subtle changes to its mini-ute for '07 - - Source: Autoweek

BMW is massaging its X3 ute for the ’07 model year, applying subtle design updates in addition to ramping-up engine power.

Design changes include: a larger kidney grille; a redesigned front bumper and spoiler; a color-keyed spoiler and front fog lights incorporated into the bodywork. At the rear are new light clusters, color-keyed panels extending lower down the bodywork and larger twin exhaust pipes. Inside, there’s a new three-spoke steering wheel and other materials enhancements.

X3’s North American power will likely come from two six-cylinder engines: a 2.5-liter 218-hp unit and a revised, 272-hp 3.0-liter engine. The 2.5-equipped X3 moves from zero to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds, with top speed of 137 mph. The 3.0-liter powered car scoots quicker, at 7.5 seconds up to a top speed of 142 mph, according to BMW estimates.

As before, X3 will come with a six-speed manual gearbox standard. A six-speed automatic is optional. For the first time on a BMW X model, BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC+) will be standard equipment, in addition to other safety features including multiple brake assist technologies.

Prices and full specs for the new X3 will be announced before its on sale date in the fall.

Official Press Release:

Fresh wind for the high flier: The new BMW X3.

Whether on country lanes, in city traffic or on gravel tracks - wherever it goes, the new BMW X3 is driving along the road to success. With powerful new engines, a fresh design and high-quality interior features, the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from BMW - especially well known for its marked agility and driving dynamics - is continuing its trail of success. The new BMW X3 has all the features to further improve its exceptional position as the only premium offer in the segment. Selective modifications in the front, rear and side areas give the vehicle a dynamic character; exceptionally high quality materials, flowing lines and stylish colour schemes dominate the interior. And the design of the new BMW X3 corresponds perfectly with the enhanced potency of its drive units. The sportiest diesel worldwide is available as the top-of-the-range engine for the new BMW X3. The newly developed 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder unit of the BMW X3 3.0sd with its Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) technology realises 210 kW/286 HP and reaches a maximum torque of 580 Newton metres. The new generation of in-line six-cylinder petrol engines with 3.0-litre and 2.5-litre capacity is also deployed in the new BMW X3. The VALVETRONIC and Bi-VANOS drive units fitted with a magnesium-aluminium composite crankcase achieve 200 kW/272 HP or 160 kW/218 HP, respectively. The Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) with optimised computer structure ensures an even more effective and rapid interaction of the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive from BMW with the driving dynamic control DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and the engine control system in all variants of the engine.

The new BMW X3 is the uncompromising further development of a vehicle concept that has caused a sensation on the international automobile markets. As an exceptionally agile sports activity vehicle, it combines dynamic handling characteristics on the road with the advantages in traction guaranteed by the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive from BMW, even during detours on rugged terrain. The new BMW X3 is still the only premium vehicle of its class - more than ever created for active and demanding car motorists who appreciate superior drive technology, versatility, driving dynamics and highest quality workmanship. The new BMW X3 offers you all the potential to express sporty élan, spontaneity and independence at the highest level.

A design with strong character underlines the dynamics.

Sensitive, yet striking describes the changes to the front and rear areas of the BMW X3. At both the front and the back, the bumper units split into two levels are clearly visible and predominantly painted in the body colour. This also underlines the high quality and sporty but elegant appearance of the new BMW X3. Only the intentionally exposed protective elements are made of robust black plastic.

A striking feature of all BMW X models is the so-called "six-eyed look". New double circular headlights with light sources and reflectors behind clear glass lend its character to the new BMW X3. The fog lights arranged in a line that sweeps diagonally to the outside from the headlights to the wheels adds to this. Its geometry reinforces the impression of a powerful vehicle crouching on the road, in the same way as the painted front apron below the outer bumper. The BMW kidney grille stands out because its increased size and the very distinctive visual effect of grille fins dyed in different colours (according to the model and variant). Kidney grille fins in a Light Titanium colour identify the BMW X3 3.0sd; the grille fins of the other six-cylinder variants are in a Graphite Metallic colour. The four-cylinder variants have black kidney grille fins. The optional headlight cleaning system has been smoothly integrated in the front section and only extends when required.

New rear light assemblies with clear glass covers over horizontal rods of light fed by LEDs ensure a striking night design, but also serve as an eye-catching feature of the new BMW X3 in daylight. Just as characteristic is the dominance of horizontal lines that continue from the tailgate right down to the bumper, thereby underscoring the powerful appearance of the new BMW X3 from this perspective.

From the side view, the striking lower line emphasises the discreet wedgeshape. Its contour is picked up in the lower side area of both the front and the rear aprons, reinforcing the impression of a dynamically extended lateral line.

High-grade materials and cultivated design in the interior.

With a gentle arrangement of shapes and transitions between the individual parts of the interior, the harmonious flow of lines is also continued in the passenger compartment of the new BMW X3. Solid functionality is combined with cultivated design. In every detail, the demand for high quality invested in the selection and workmanship of all materials cannot only be seen, but also felt. The instrument panel is characterised by a new décor strip that matches in colour and material with the decorative surfaces of the centre console.

Galvanised metals on the door handles and regulators of the air temperature control system, exclusive leather and textile variants, a high-quality colour scheme and designs for the roof lining as well as plastic surfaces with a highclass texture very clearly reflect the character of the robust, yet elegant interior. Also the new three-spoke steering wheels and the spacious storage areas integrated in the door trims further the impression of high quality, both optically as well as haptically. This respectability at an especially high level accords with the style of a modern generation of motorists who use their vehicle for a great variety of purposes, but always want to enjoy a cultivated ambience at the same time.

Four variants of equipment, ten exterior colours, six trim colours and five décor surface variants present a multitude of possibilities for the customisation of the new BMW X3. As an alternative to the basic equipment for the new BMW X3, sports or luxury seats are also optionally available. The material selected in the equipment specifications for the seat upholstery is also used in the centre console, the armrests and the door trims. The trim colours Black, Grey or Sand Beige create a more tranquil atmosphere, whereas the Terracotta, Anthracite or Tobacco tones awaken a more strongly accentuated general mood. The choice of decorative surfaces can also express personal style - from a classically elegant wood finish to the markedly sporty note of the aluminium look.

The new BMW X3 3.0sd, above all, provides an exceptionally exclusive driver environment. Foot pedals with stainless steel applications are included in the standard specification. In all six-cylinder variants, the roadspeed display goes up to the value of 260 km/h, and the chronometer scaling in the cockpit of the BMW X3 3.0sd goes up to a value extended by a further 10 km/h. From outside, the BMW X3 3.0sd stands out with its attractive 18-inch wheels, a markedly sporty rear apron and the larger tailpipes of its exhaust system among other features.

Can't remember where but a few weeks ago I read that the 3.0 272hp will be going in the 3 (sedan) and 5 series for 2007.

Here is the press relase for the US:

Building on its reputation as an agile, fun to drive, attainable BMW Sports Activity Vehicle, the X3 receives a significant freshening for the 2007 model year. It begins, of course, with a performance upgrade. It also includes additional safety features, revamped exterior styling, an increase in the level of interior refinement as well as new luxury and performance oriented options. Reflecting its increase in performance, it also gets a new name - the BMW X3 3.0si. As a BMW SAV, it will again come standard with BMW's innovative xDrive all-wheel drive. The 2007 BMW X3 3.0si will arrive in U.S. showrooms early this fall.

A new engine and transmission choices offer even greater performance
The BMW X3 3.0si will be powered by the award-winning aluminum/magnesium 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, featuring VALVETRONIC technology. In the X3 3.0si, this engine produces 260 hp at 6,600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. This represents an increase of 35 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque. True to its BMW heritage, the X3 3.0si will be offered with a six-speed manual as standard equipment. A new six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission will be offered as a no cost option in place of the previous 5-speed. The performance and feel are both improved thanks to incredibly quick gear changes. The result is a significant reduction in acceleration times for both transmissions. With the six-speed manual, the X3 3.0si accelerates from 0 - 60 mph is 6.9 seconds, an improvement of 0.7 seconds over the previous X3 3.0i. With the new six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic, the X3 3.0si goes from 0 - 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, a 0.8 second improvement. In typical BMW fashion, this increase in performance does not come at the sacrifice of efficiency.

An enhanced Dynamic Stability Control system works in concert with standard xDrive all-wheel drive
The Dynamic Stability Control system in the 2007 X3 3.0si includes all of the latest safety enhancements. These include Brake Drying to improve emergency stopping capability in wet conditions, Brake Standby to give an edge in emergency braking, Start-off Assistant and Brake Fade Compensation.

The 2007 X3 3.0si becomes the first BMW SAV to include Dynamic Traction Control as part of DSC. At the touch of a button, DTC waits for a higher threshold of wheel-slip before engaging DSC functions. This helps when starting off on loose snow, for example. It also offers the driving enthusiast another dimension of driving joy.

In order to ensure a high degree of stability and traction under all conditions, the xDrive all-wheel drive system, DSC and the engine management system are networked via Integrated Chassis Management. Working together, the systems will react to a loss of traction at any wheel by first utilizing xDrive to move traction to the front or rear axle as appropriate. Then, if necessary, DSC will work to help stabilize the vehicle.

Styling enhancements inside and out distinguish the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si
The front styling of the X3 3.0si has been enhanced with a new front bumper that frames a new, slightly larger twin-kidney grill. The cleaner headlight assembly no longer includes the DOT amber reflector, which moves to the fender. The optional Xenon Adaptive Headlights now include the corona light rings. The headlight washers, which are included with the Cold Weather Package, now retract into the bumper. The new rear bumper is highlighted with chrome exhaust tips. The new taillight cluster includes horizontal LED taillights. Adaptive Brake Lights enable the distinctive new taillights to illuminate along with, and at the same intensity as the brake lights in an emergency stop. Newly styled 17-inch wheels are standard, with 18-inch wheels available as a stand-alone option.

The more highly refined interior is immediately apparent. The new dashboard material has a more luxurious grain. The dashboard now has wood trim to match the center console and door pulls. The door panels have been enhanced with solid door pockets and additional upholstery above the armrests. When leather upholstery is ordered, the upholstery on the door panels includes stitching for an added premium luxury detail. The standard multi-function steering wheel is a new three-spoke design. Audiophiles will appreciate the new standard auxiliary input jack located on the back of the center console. For added comfort, 16-way comfort seats are available as an option. These include power headrest adjustment and a two-piece adjustable backrest.

2007 X3 enhancements continue with the packages
The content of the popular Premium Package has been improved to include a compass in the rearview mirror, a Universal Garage Door Opener and power-folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors. BMW Assist now includes four years of service. The Cold Weather Package adds heated rear seats to the heated front seats, headlight washers and ski-bag. A heated steering remains a stand-alone option. For the driving enthusiast, the Sport Package content remains the same. For those who want the ultimate in handling and responsiveness, the optional upgrade now includes mixed-size 19-inch wheels with performance tires.

The styling updates to the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si make this Sports Activity Vehicle even more elegant and comfortable while the performance enhancements, in true BMW tradition, ensure that it remains the vehicle of choice for the driving enthusiast.

272 is the rating BMW uses in Europe. And for some time now for this engine. It's 260HP for us which I am sure will be carried over to the rest of the BMW cars. There was a light massage of the engine to achieve an extra 5HP which if I remember correctly it was first applied on the 1-Series 130i in Europe last year.

I have an '06 model, the interior is 99% identical to what you see in the '07. Most significant is the extra wood along the dash. Interesting thins about this photo I just grabbed off of bmwusa.com, it's got 3 pedals and an automatic trans shifter.

Next Gen. BMW-X3 News **2011 Models Spy Shots (page 1)**

BMW planning production shift for next-gen X3 in effort to ease currency issues - - By JENS MEINERS | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS EUROPE - - Source: Autoweek

BMW will build the next X3 in-house in Germany and the U.S., or just in the U.S., supplier and company sources say.

Currently the premium SUV is built by contract coachbuilder Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. To offset the loss, BMW could offer Magna Steyr a contract to build a sporty, two-door X3 called the X4 or another niche model, suppliers say.

The second-generation X3 is due in 2010.

BMW originally planned to sell 40,000 X3s a year but demand for the SUV has exceeded expectations since its launch two years ago. Magna Steyr built 112,800 units in 2004, its first full production year.

In an ambitious move, BMW is planning a peak annual production of more than 160,000 units for the second-generation X3.

BMW is leaning toward building one-third of the premium SUVs at its US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and two-thirds in Regensburg, Germany.

“BMW aims to produce 50,000 units in Spartanburg and more than 100,000 in Regensburg,” a source close to the program said.

Solving currency headache

Building the X3 in both the U.S. and Germany would minimize BMW’s exposure to currency fluctuations. Last year, BMW sold 34,746 X3s in North America and 66,815 units in Europe, according to Automotive News Europe’s 2006 Global Market Data Book.

Burkhard Göschel, BMW’s management board member for development and purchasing, declined to comment on where the next X3 will be built.

“We discuss which plants will build our models all the time. Magna Steyr is an excellent partner and we will continue to work with them,” Göschel told Automotive News Europe at a BMW event this month.

BMW is aiming to operate its plants at full capacity and use coachbuilders to make additional models or handle overflow volume.

BMW produces the Z4 coupe and roadster and the X5 in Spartanburg. In 2008, the plant will add a coupe-like crossover likely to be called the X6. Moving all X3 production to Spartanburg would probably require expanding the plant.

BMW’s Regensburg plant in southern Germany builds the 1- and 3-series models. The factory will have extra capacity because BMW is expected to transfer some 1-series production to its new plant in Leipzig, eastern Germany.

BMW could offer Magna Steyr about 40,000 units a year of a two-door version of the X3 starting in 2010. Or Magna Steyr could get a convertible BMW model.

There is a precedent for this. Last November, DaimlerChrysler decided to shift production of the four-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz E class from Magna Steyr to its factory in Sindelfingen, Germany, starting in 2007, to boost Sindelfingen’s capacity utilization. But D/C also extended Magna Steyr’s contract to build the G-class premium SUV until 2010. “We have found a viable solution for both partners,” D/C Chairman Dieter Zetsche said at the time.

Magna built 54,972 X3s in the first half, said J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting.

Suppliers expect the basic plan for where to build the next X3 to be clear by year-end. Magna Steyr is unlikely to get the next generation but has not been entirely eliminated, suppliers say.

BMW invested to help Magna Steyr expand the Graz plant to build up to 80,000 X3 units a year and was extremely pleased when Magna made an additional 33,000 X3 units to meet high demand.

“We are happy to have Magna as a cooperation partner,” new BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer told ANE in April when he was in charge of manufacturing.

Magna Steyr CEO Manfred Remmel has said: “We are confident we will find a solution of mutual satisfaction.”

They expected to sell 40K X3s and they needed to build 113K X3s in 2004! Wow!

A 2 door SUV? That sounds stupid to me. How would that be convenient for hauling people and stuff? You want people to have to deal with a seat & seat belt to get to the back seats to get stuff in and out? It defeats the functionality of an SUV IMO.

Magna-Steyr is NOT BMW. If they allow some other company to build X3s that's BS that they still call it a BMW.

Yeah...just like if Mercedes was to have Magna-Steyr build a G-class or something like that...oh wait...

BMW continues its BMW X3 tease while conducting final testing stages on the 2011 BMW X3, which will likely receive its world debut at the 2010 Paris motorshow this fall. Bigger more comfortable than the first gen X3 it's replacing, the 2011 X3 will move slightly upmarket while the X1 slots in under it.

It'll be a sad day in Graz when production stops. I used to stop there about once a month and see truckloads of X3s coming out of the factory.

Duh, course it will. Although i think it might come out looking too bland.

BMW having a bland design...? I doubt it. I may not enjoy some of their designs, but they are far from bland.

Will it be getting the new 3.0 single turbo? I think they only ship the older TT to the US for the Z3 now, am I right?

The N54 TT will still be used in the 335is but the 335i will have the single turbo N55 engine. My guess the new X3 will have the N55 as well.

Ah, yes the Z4 sDrive35is and the 335is will have the N54 engine with more power coming out of it than before.

2011 BMW X3 Spotted in Alpine White with painted and trimmed front bumper
<hr style="color: rgb(221, 221, 221); background-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> In a seeming reply from BMW about all the complaints over the flat black unpainted front bumper element seen on all the previously spied X3 prototypes so far, this new set of photos shows off the car with a painted lower front bumper element and a silver middle intake trim piece. This is likely the format that the US spec X3 would come with. Black tape still covers two slat areas above the brake duct intakes and is reminscent of the chrome accents seen on the 7-Series M-Sport, an additional trim piece may go in this spot further highlighting the front end design.

At the rear, the rear tailights' shape has been revealed which is themed heavily upon the X5 with the added protrusion of the lower edge to give visual distinctiveness.

These parts make a massive difference. Whats more, the overall angular appearance of this new X3 continues the theme of the current X3, but is a dramatic shift from the rest of the current BMW lineup. Overall, when judged at a glance and quickly, the car does give off the scent of a mini-X5, when compared to the competing models in this class (GLK/Q5) this is a GOOD, no GREAT thing.

Personally, I think this car will be an absolute hit, that is assuming the car meets the hype over its improved driving dynamics and quality standards.
