Spy Shots: 2010 BMW X1 SUV
In addition to its V-series of cars BMW is also working on a new compact SUV model positioned below the current X3 that has now been spotted in prototype form at the Nurburgring. Likely to be called the X1, the new car is based on the 1-series range but will come with a taller ride height as well as an X-drive AWD system lifted directly from the larger X3 SUV.
Engine options will range from a 145hp 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine to a range topping 3L diesel. Transmissions will include a conventional six-speed manual as well an optional six-speed self shifter. Expect to see elements from the CS concept car make it onto the new X1 including an enlarged grille, wrap around headlights and an aggressive bumper.
Production numbers are expected to be around the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of next year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Much of the car’s components will also be shared with the upcoming Mini SUV to save on development costs, although the BMW model is expected to be significantly larger than the Mini.

Anyhow, small SUV is for riding height. the main target is female drivers. The recent issue of Roundel has an interesting article by Satch about it.
All BMWs are tested on the Ring. They stick to their ultimate machine message and offers the best performance in its class. I think the X1 will also get the twin turbo 6. Small vehicle + big engine = fun. Maybe it'll have torque vectoring also.

I'd rather just get the Mini Clubman

If the BMW X3 isn't ugly or space-inefficient enough for you, here's the Concept X1, which is a lightly veiled version of the production soft ute you'll see in BMW dealers shortly. Yeech. We can't fathom how it's going to be that much different than the X3, seeing as BMWs famliy tree among 1 and 3 series vehicles is starting to look as inbred as English Aristocracy, but we're going to go way out on a limb and suggest that it's a little tighter in most dimensions while sharing powertrains. Styling-wise, as long as you ignore anything forward of the A-pillar, you'll be okay. It's largely standard BMW fare, just scaled down. We're not quite sure what happened up front - it's bad. From the visage that's evocative of the 7 series to the oddly shaped wheel arches, it just doesn't come together, and the way the proboscis sticks out when viewing the X1's profile borders on disturbing. The most amazing thing: people will fall all over themselves to buy it. It'll definitely drive like a BMW, a redeeming trait, but we'd much rather see a 135 shooting brake.

Nicer than the X3 for sure.

I actually like it. Not that I want to stay SUVs are good, but the design itself is well integrated and executed with a consistent theme, and it's much better than the X3.
It's likely the size of the Infinite EX. As I understand, X3 will grow in size when a new version comes out in 2010.
X1 will probably a variety of 4 cylinder engines. Still, I think the 1 series hatch performs better, without the bother of xdrive, and is more efficient.

Much much nicer than the X3. But how small is it? The X3 is pretty cramped for a vehicle its size. I cant imagine the X1 being any better.

NO. certainly not the new one that could accomodate 3 rows.
The X1 seems like a great cross shop to a loaded CRV, etc. Pricing probably wouldnt reflect this, however.

It's 3x better than the X3 (pun intended), but it's still not that great. The rear and profile is okay; the front is horrible, with a huge snout. I'd take the EX35, new baby Volvo, or better yet, the new Audi Q5 any day.
