Audi: A5 Sportback news **Revealed (page 1)**

From Leftlanenews...

If subtracting two doors from the Audi A4 makes an A5, what does adding two doors back give you? Still an A5, apparently. According to a new report out of Germany, Audi is planning to launch a four-door A5 to join the growing segment of so-called four-door coupes.

Inspired by the success of the the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, it seems every automaker wants to get in on the four-door coupe party. Audi's parent company recently launched the Passat CC, and BMW is working on its low-slung Gran Turismo. Other automakers are also rumored to be mulling such cars.

According to Germany's Autobild the car will be called the A5 Sportback. Long gone are the days of simple model line from Audi, or any German automaker for that matter.

The car is expected to launch in early 2009, the report claims. Audi is also widely expected to launch its CLS-like A7 "Sportback" in 2010, but this is the first we've heard of an A5 of similar description.

i like it, but i'm confused now...

A5 coupe = 2 door version of new A4 sedan

A5 4 door = 4 door version of A5 coupe, which is a 2 door version of new A4 sedan?

A7 = long-rumored four door coupe aka "CLS fighter"

I'm still confused how a coupe can have four doors.
aside from that, the car looks awesome.

Also, coupé. a closed, two-door car shorter than a sedan of the same model.

well the article says they're going to launch the A7 as the "CLS fighter" so i assume the A7 will be a larger sedan than the 4 door A5.

eh. you would assume the 4 door A5 would be just the A4....haha.

One can't help but wonder what the difference will really be between the A5 and the A4. Especially since an A5 (two door) already exists. For the CLS, which isn't based on the current E-Class, MB didn't have a coupe positioned there (above the E but below the S). So, there isn't any redundancy. The CLS goes head to head with the 6-Series, except with (two to many) doors. And ofcourse the A7 is coming CLS style to do battle in that segment. I think a two AND four door version of the A5 is overkill, IMHO.

BTW, the funniest thing is, with all these new 4 door "coupes", they really all look like a hatchback, and SHOULD have a rear hatchback in order to make it practical. Otherwise, the tiny short trunk lid is difficult for luggage access. However, I bet you once they are called "hatchbacks" they will fail in America. But if they are a "4 door coupe" they will sell like hotcakes.

Just why are people in America so afraid of "hatchbacks" and "wagons"? I just don't understand!

IMO, the A5 will be the size of the A6 BUT with the sporty back... kinda like the difference between the E Class and the CLS Class... some folks don't care for the slant back... some folks want something sporty, but need the ease of backseats entry... how hard is it to understand?

I don't like the new Audi interior at all. Saw a 2009 A4 today ... They've ruined what made Audi unique.

The S5 was fantastic though.

Kind of cheapens the image of the car a little, but people want 4 doors and Audi wants to sell cars so there you go.

From Motor Authority...

Audi will be releasing a host of models in coming years to expand into new segments as it attempts to topple BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the quest to sell more than a 1.5 million vehicles by 2015. Some of the cars in the pipeline include the A1 premium hatch, A7 four-door coupe and a Sportback version of the current A5 Coupe.

Earlier this week, Audi released the first details for the new A5 Sportback, which is set to go on sale in Europe following a debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Pricing in Europe will start at €33,650 (approximately $45,000) for the base 2.0L TDI model, however, Audi has confirmed that an even cheaper model will arrive in the middle of next year.

Described as offering the practicality of an Avant wagon with the elegant styling of a coupe, the new A5 Sportback features a five door body with an elongated profile. This coupe-like silhouette is the result of a roof section with a long, tapering roofline that is 36mm lower than the A4 Sedan and of the short overhangs at the front and rear as well as the long wheelbase of 2,810mm.

Inside, there’s 980L of storage available with the rear seats are folded and generous space for four adults.

Initially the A5 Sportback will be available with a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines. The two petrol versions, the 2.0 TFSI quattro with an output of 211hp (155kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) of torque and the 3.2L V6 quattro generating 265hp (195kW) are both equipped with the Audi valvelift system. This feature can produce more power and higher torque as well as lower fuel consumption.

The following engines are also available right from the start: the 2.0L TDI with 170hp (125kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) of torque, a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system, the 2.7 TDI with 190hp (140kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque, and the 3.0L V6 TDI with 240hp (170kW) plus an enormous 369lb-ft (500Nm) of maximum torque and quattro all-wheel drive.

To ensure optimal handling performance the A5 Sportback comes with a newly developed electronic stability program with an electronic differential lock on the front axle. The car also comes with the Audi drive select dynamic driving system, which allows the driver to choose between three different modes which influences the throttle response characteristics, the shift points for the seven-speed S tronic or multitronic transmissions, and supports the servotronic steering. If the vehicle is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, freely programmable level is also available.

Expect more details to be released closer to the car’s unveiling in September.

the 2.0L TDI with 170hp (125kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) of torque, a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system,
I just noticed this - has anyone else actually provided the start/stop feature before? I know Mazda has one in the works and maybe others. I assume this will trickle down to other TDI and eventually gas engines. This could be a big gas mileage boost to folks who do a lot of city (sitting at lights) driving. I wonder if this will affect the EPA city cycle mileage numbers.

BMW, and I remember hearing/reading something about Fiat having it.

Well the A7 will compete with the CLS...not this.

Not sure why Audi made the A5 the sportback. Should have done the A4 in a sportback and left the A5 a coupe...

Either way, it looks hot...
