Audi’s 6-Shooter - - By JONATHAN WONG - - SOurce: Autoweek

Audi’s answer to BMW’s big 6 Series coupe breaks cover next month in Geneva, wearing the A5 designation and styling reminiscent of the Nuvolari Quattro concept that Audi revealed in Geneva in 2003.

The more potent 4.2-liter 354-hp V8-equipped S5, capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.0 seconds, also debuts at Geneva.

Audi designed and all-new chassis and specific suspension components for the four-seater, and increased steering response by revising the steering rack and installing it ahead of the front axle line.

S5 gets stiffer suspension tuning, more powerful brakes and 18-inch wheels. Visually, the S5 enjoys specific front and rear bumpers, dual exhaust and a larger rear spoiler.

U.S. sales of the 2008 A5 and S5 begin in November with the 3.2-liter, 265-hp V6 as the primary A5 engine offering. Both models launch with six-speed manual transmissions with six-speed automatics appearing three months later for the A5 and six months later in the S5. Although front drive is available in Europe, all U.S. models come equipped with quattro all-wheel-drive.

European sales of the big coupe begin in June, where buyers will have a range of powerplant choices, including 1.8-liter 170-hp turbocharged four and 3.2-liter 265-hp V6 gasoline offerings, and a pair of diesel engines.

What comes next? We can only assume that, in the Audi tradition, an M6-challenging RS5 coupe will be in the offing, with a reveal possibly as early at the New York show in April.

I thought the A5 was going against the 3-series coupe, not the 6-series. Hmm...

See i had a feeling it would be larger than the 3series coupe.

I mean this is suppose to be more of a A6 coupe so i figured it be large.

In otherwords, i wont be able to afford one.

I was wondering the same thing when I read that on Autoweek....I thought it was supposed to compete with the 3 series. The article says 6-series fighter. Isn't the R8 in that world.
Me confused.
I like that s5/a5 though. It flows really well. The rear end, esp on s5 looks awome.

Now im confused. Heres what i got off the Audi forums.

Wheelbase: 108.3"
Overall length: 182"
Overall width: 73"
Overall height: 54.1"

Thats closer A4 sizing.

I think Autoweek has it wrong. From everything that I've read, the A5 was always mentioned as the coupe version of the A4 based on the Nuvolari concept and the upcoming B8 platform. That's more of a 335i coupe competitor than 6 series. As some of you mentioned, the dimensions are more similar to the A4 and from what I've read, Audi will not be making cabrio versions of the A4 when the B8 is revealed. Instead, expect cabrio versions of the A5 to fill the gap. And really, if they want to compete with the 650i or M6, they need a better engine than what's in the A5/S5. So again, I'm thinking 3 series coupe competitor.

It wouldn't make sense that this car would have gone up against the 3 series because of it's size.

Now an S4/RS4 coupe, that's a different story.

By the way, the bottom line is that the S5 and the 335 will be about par on performance. After all the 3L Turbo engine in the 335 makes around the same power as the 4.2L V8 in the S5.

The S5 is going to be pricey (I'm betting $60k nicely loaded) and if the the current residuals/rates in the lineup are any indication.....this car is going to lease out like complete shit.

So what do you do? Buy an expensive Audi that I'm sure will suffer the historical steep depreciation that most Audi's suffer from.

Or lease it and get a terrible deal?

The lower redline gauge is of the 3.0 TDI interior....diesel's redline lower.

The real life pics are fantastic. BEAU-TI-FUL interior.

Audi is currently my favorite german manufacturer.

Strictly on exterior and interior looks, this thing absolutely spanks a E92 IMHO with its unnecessarily large rear overhang, and disproportionate look. I think Audis got a winner with this one.

And doesn't that pricing put it in M3/ convert 3 -series pricing for the S5? That makes it a 3-series competitior, no?

Now that Audi’s A5 coupe has been revealed, it’s only a matter of time until we see the release of the Cabriolet version. This latest rendering gives us an early look at the car’s new styling ahead of the model’s launch in roughly twelve months time. The A5 Cabriolet is scheduled to enter production alongside its hardtop cousin at a plant in Neckarsulm, Germany, where it’s expected to replace the current A4 convertible in Audi’s lineup.

Unlike its 3-series rival from BMW, Audi will likely employ a lightweight canvas roof for its new convertible that will save both on costs as well as storage. Expect the car to be powered by the same engines as found in the coupe, which means the latest FSI and TDI engines, with output ranging from 125 to 195kW (170 to 265 bhp). There’s also likely to be V8 powered S5 and RS5 performance models as well.

Audi is also rumoured to be working on even more drop-top models including a possible performance roadster variant with a mid-engine layout. Follow the jump to see the rendering of the new A5 drop-top in full.

if I had to guess, $48K-$53K base + options.

I take back my original estimate.

I'd say the S5 will go for about $58K - $62K base + options.

I didn't realize the S4 starts at $48K

Better save even more pennies.

Well, the S4 bases at $47,500.

So, I think the S5 will base closer to $50k.

Nicely, optioned I'm guessing $55k-$56k.

$60k is a bit rich now that I'm thinking about it again.
