Apollo: Intensa Emozione News

https://www.motor1.com/news/246178/a...ment-with-hwa/

The talented folks behind the Mercedes CLK GTR will put their knowledge to good use by perfecting the V12 machine.

A match made in hypercar heaven? It sure looks like one. Apollo Automobili has announced it has teamed up with HWA AG to put the finishing touches on the Intensa Emozione (IE). In case HWA doesn’t ring a bell, it was founded back in 1988 as a spin-off from AMG and the company was named after 81-year-old Hans Werner Aufrecht, none other than AMG’s founder in 1967.

HWA was essentially the brains behind the legendary Mercedes CLK GTR race car and it was also in charge of manufacturing the road-going version in both coupe and roadster flavors. There was also the CLK GTR Super Sport powered by the same 7.3-liter V12 AMG one found in the immortal Pagani Zonda, among other Mercedes models.

Speaking of a V12 engine, the Apollo IE has one with a displacement of 6.3 liters to push out a meaty 780 horsepower and 560 pound-feet (759 Newton-meters) of torque without resorting to forced induction. Despite the massive engine, weight is at a remarkably low 1,250 kilograms (2,756 pounds) thanks to an abundance of carbon fiber for the body and chassis.

Billed by its creator as being the “only modern day GT1-inspired car,” the Intensa Emozione will be perfected by HWA to make sure it will live up to the hype. With more than 20 years of experience in the development of both race and road cars, the AMG spin-off will apply its expertise in areas such as safety, powertrain calibration, reliability, and thermal dynamics.

Development of the Apollo IE will come to an end later this year and customer deliveries are slated to commence in 2019. As you may recall, only ten examples of the $2.6-million, 207-mph hypercar will ever be built. Those fortunate enough to claim one will be given the opportunity to enter the dedicated Apollo Time Attack series and also call dibs on the Arrow supercar coming next year.

Re-newcomer to the supercar game Apollo is making waves with the most angular supercar since the ‘70s, but what interests me is its heavily reworked Ferrari V12, good for a ton of horsepower and a ton of revs. But pay more, apparently, and you get more.

That’s the word from Apollo in a recent interview with friend of Jalopnik and regular contributor over here Alex Goy, presenting this time for Carfection. The claim comes in at 44 seconds into this video:

Here’s what Apollo’s operations director Ryan Berris says:

So, we’ve done a feasibility study, that, basically, at an additional cost, if the client wishes, we can do further development work on the engine to extract 1,000 horsepower, still being naturally aspirated. The engine would rev to over 11,000 RPM, and would have a compression ratio of 16.5 to one.
Let me reiterate a few points from this:
  • Buyers are referred to as “clients.” This is some rich people shit.
  • “Further development work,” is nicely hedge-ey about whether or not this has been done.
  • Over 11,000 RPM
  • 16.5:1 compression ratio
Is this impossible? No. Over in Formula 1, engines are mandated to stay below 18:1 for their compression ratio. Do those engines blow up all the time? Totally! But that’s part of the fun and excitement of car ownership, right? For more on compression ratios and how they work, check this out.

Also, getting a thousand horsepower without a power adder is certainly also within the realm of possibility. For a mere $35,000 I could call up Mast Motorsports and get an 850 horsepower naturally-aspirated V8 that has a mere 14:1 compression ratio. That’s a 7.6 liter to the Apollo’s 6.3, but whatever.

Either way, I love this thing and I hope that the world gets to hear more of it.

If you’ve never heard of the Apollo Intense Emotion, here’s what you need to know in brief. It’s a V12 hypercar built on the bones of the now defunct German supercar maker Gumpert and its discontinued supercar Apollo. The 6.3-liter engine under the hood is good for a whopping 780 horsepower (581 kilowatts) and 560 pound-feet (758 Newton-meters) of torque, more than enough for a 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) acceleration in just 2.7 seconds. Only 10 will be made, each priced at more than $2.7 million.

That alien-like car is now visiting the YouTube show of Alex Hirschi, also known as the Supercar Blondie. She is a popular social influencer in Dubai and drives supercars for a living, and in this new episode is joined by James May and Richard Hammond to check out a running prototype of the Apollo IE hypercar.

To make things funnier and to teach its audience more facts about the car, Alex is asking the former Top Gear hosts a couple of questions about it. For example, what customization options are available when a customer is putting his order for the vehicle? Can you get a picture of your face engraved on the engine bay? Can they 3D scan your body so the seats fit your measurements? Or can you customize the doors and the way they open?

Here’s one more. How much do the titanium exhaust tips cost? For this one, both Hammond and May gave completely wrong assumptions, but the former is actually closer to the actual price, which is approximately $69,000. With two correct answers, he wins the privilege to drive the IE on the street. Apparently, driving such a car is not really an easy job, but after several attempts, Hammond manages to start and drive the car.

Join the trio in the video at the top to find out more interesting details about the hypercar.

The Apollo Intensa Emozione has been on a non-stop world tour since its premiere last year and over the weekend, made a surprise appearance at an event held by the Supercar Owners Club in Switzerland.

The event is held annually on a private airport runway and consistently attracts some of the wildest creations on four wheels. Despite being surrounded by hypercar royalty that included the likes of a Maserati MC12, the Apollo IE was one of the event’s highlights.

While the car wasn’t driven to its limits, it did make a few exhibition runs down the airfield and proved to be one of the best-sounding vehicles of the pack and rightfully turned many, many heads.

Making the Apollo IE sound so good is the fact that it’s powered by a Ferrari-derived 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated V12 engine that’s been fettled to deliver 769 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque while paired to a bespoke, and very expensive, exhaust system. This combination results in a howl not too dissimilar to some of the finest Pagani Zonda models ever produced.

It remains to be seen how progressed development of the Intensa Emozione is but there’s no doubt the reborn company is attracting the interest of potential customers wherever it takes this monster.

What’s especially impressive about the Intensa Emozione is that it doesn’t just have a crazy engine going for it. It also has one of the most insane exteriors of any automobile and makes even the craziest Paganis and Koenigseggs look restrained.
