Alfa Romeo: GTV News

From here: https://www.crankandpiston.com/alfa-...bhp-gtv-coupe/

Joining the 8C will be a new Alfa Romeo GTV coupe also scheduled for 2022. This new four-seat coupe will have, Alfa has confirmed, 600bhp and be all-wheel drive. Power is most likely to be an updated version of the 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine currently fitted to the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models, but will include upgrades such as electrically driven turbochargers, helping boost power to the magic 600bhp figure.

Built on an updated version of the current Giulia’s platform the new GTV will be a direct rival to Audi’s RS5, AMG’s C63 and the next all-new BMW M4, of which all three will either have been replaced with all-new models or approaching their launch when the new Alfa hits the road.

The top Quadrifoglio trim will use a hybrid powertrain.

What It Is: Alfa Romeo is resurrecting its storied GTV nameplate and applying it to a sultry two-door coupe that is expected to offer as much as 600 horsepower and some form of hybrid technology. The news was announced as part of FCA’s divulging of its five-year plan, and it is but one of a flurry of upcoming vehicles for the Italian brand, including a 700-plus-hp 8C supercar, a Giulietta hatchback, a new subcompact crossover, and a new mid-size crossover.

Why It Matters: Alfa has used the GTV letters on numerous two-doors throughout its history. The letters stand for Gran Turismo Veloce, which roughly transfers to fast grand touring. Some of the most significant cars to wear the name are the GTV 2000s of the 1970s and the GTV6s of the 1980s. As Alfa continues its expansion into the U.S. market, this car should generate plenty of excitement and add another segment in which the company can compete against rivals such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. With the 4C fading away and the 8C expected to be a high-end halo car when it debuts, the GTV will assume the mantle of the affordable Alfa coupe.

Platform: As a two-door version of the Giulia sedan that is already part of Alfa’s U.S. lineup, it will share that car’s platform and mechanicals. The GTV will likely follow the Giulia’s lead and be offered with standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive.

Powertrain: The GTV will share more than its architecture and basic looks with the Giulia. We expect entry versions of the GTV to use the Giulia’s turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 280 horsepower and links up with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the top-level GTV Quadrifoglio will have more than 600 horsepower (a massive jump up from the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s 505) courtesy of a hybrid powertrain that bakes in all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.

Competition: Audi A5, BMW 4-Series, Infiniti Q60, , Lexus RC, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Alfa hasn’t said exactly which model year will see the launch of the GTV, but it is slated to arrive by 2022. The styling, exclusivity, and increase in power will likely translate to premium prices versus those of the Giulia, which ranges from $39,440 to $75,295. Figure you’ll pay 10 to 15 percent more than that for a GTV.

It’s probably safe to say that, as of lately, Alfa Romeo hasn’t been very consistent regarding its plans for the future of its model lineup. In June 2018, the Italian automaker announced it has intentions to bring a duo of sports cars to the market but then in November 2019, it was reported the project has been canceled. Then again, just about a month ago, Alfa’s new CEO expressed his desire to bring back to life the GTV together with another performance model.

Nothing can be confirmed at the moment as Jean-Philippe Imparato simply said he is “very interested” in a new GTV, though a new report from Autocar tries to shine more light on what could be expected from the resurrected model. The British publication claims the automaker is considering a very ambitious plan for the new GTV, which can evolve into a flagship electric four-door coupe as a rival for the BMW i4 and the likes. That would represent a drastic departure from the sporty two-door GTV last sold for the 2004 model year.

Autocar also says a number of other options are currently being pondered for the revived GTV, including a more conventional two-door coupe with a retro-inspired design. Both electrified combustion and fully-electric powertrains are under consideration, with sources close to the matter who’ve allegedly seen planning documents suggesting the new product could be targeted against the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.

The potential launch of a new GTV would be part of Alfa Romeo’s ambitious plan to completely overhaul its lineup by the middle of the decade. Under Imparato, the Italian brand is expected to launch new generations of its existing vehicles, as well as brand new nameplates based on new electrified platforms shared with other Stellantis brands.
