Fisker: Ocean News

US electric vehicle startup Fisker has announced that its Ocean electric SUV has achieved a combined WLTP range of up to 440 miles (707 kilometers) in Europe.

According to Fisker, the Ocean SUV has the longest range of any battery electric SUV sold in Europe today, with the combined WLTP figure exceeding Fisker's previous estimate of 390 miles for the range-topping Extreme trim.

The company says the Ocean can potentially drive from London to Glasgow or Paris to Frankfurt on a single battery charge, with range to spare. The Fisker Ocean offers significantly more range than other long range SUVs sold in Europe, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV (365 miles) and Tesla Model X (351 miles).

Fisker expects the Ocean to receive European homologation by April 28, 2023, which will allow it to start customer deliveries in the region thereafter. The EV maker will open the first European Fisker Centers+ in Vienna and Copenhagen on April 11, with additional Centers+ and Lounges across Europe and the US to open throughout 2023.

The Fisker Ocean is available to reserve and configure on the Fisker website in three versions: Sport, Ultra, and Extreme. The company says some trims are sold out in several launch markets – it's probably referring to the fully loaded Ocean One launch edition limited to 5,000 vehicles worldwide.

The Ocean Sport base model features a single motor powertrain making 275 horsepower for a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds and a range of 275 miles. The Ocean Ultra gets a dual motor setup with 540 hp, a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, and 390 miles of range. The range-topping Ocean Extreme brings 550 hp, a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds, and 440 miles of range.

Fisker hasn't revealed battery capacities yet, but said the Sport will get a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, while the Ultra and Extreme will offer batteries with nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cell chemistry supplied by CATL.

It's a cool vehicle. I have my eye on it as a possible CR-V replacement.

Fisker has announced that CEO Henrik Fisker recently hand-delivered the company's first Ocean electric SUV to a buyer in Copenhagen, Denmark just as the company's predicted production ramp is set to start at the beginning of the second quarter of 2023. The Ocean One launch model in question features an impressive 440 miles of WLTP-rated range and a starting price of US$70,500.

It was previously reported that Fisker had produced a handful of units of its Ocean SUV in Q4 of 2022, but that it planned to ramp up production in 2023 to reach a total of 42,400 units by the end of the year. As of February 2023, Fisker had received over 65,000 pre-orders for the Ocean.

Only time will tell if Fisker can meet its considerable pre-orders, especially given that its production target for 2023 only covers 65% of the pre-orders. 2023 has continued to take a toll on EV supply chains, with even Tesla having to reassess its strategies in some countries.

Fisker's Ocean SUV is a fairly competitive platform, given that even the US$35,970 base model Ocean Sport delivers a rather impressive 273 miles of range. Moving up to the Ocean Ultra nets you 379 miles of range, while all the trims above that offer 440 miles of range from a dual-motor powertrain.

The manufacturer seems to be taking a different approach to things, compared to its bigger rivals, too. Instead of building out its own charging network, like Tesla, Fisker has partnered with a number of companies, including Deftpower in the EU and ChargePoint in the US, to provide its customers with a charging solution. This strategy should help the company reach a broad market without having to go through the slow infrastructure development that Tesla experienced.

For the first time since 2014, when the Karma project was sold to China's Wanxiang, the Fisker badge will once again feature on a vehicle sold in the US.

After yesterday's announcement that the Ocean electric SUV got an EPA-estimated rating of 360 miles, Fisker Inc said it will start volume deliveries to US customers the week of June 19. The maximum range rating, which applies to the Ocean Extreme on standard 20-inch wheels and tires (and the Ocean One limited-run launch model), exceeded Fisker's previous estimates.

The Fisker Ocean Extreme has also received both an EPA Certificate of Conformity and a California Air Resources Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO), which means it's approved for sale and delivery in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia.

Fisker already started deliveries in Europe last month, but the company only handed over two Ocean vehicles, one in Copenhagen, Denmark and another in Munich, Germany – the latter bought by Henrik Fisker himself.

It will be interesting to see if Fisker will adopt the same approach in the US and deliver only a handful of vehicles come June 19 – the use of the words "volume deliveries" in the press release certainly indicates the opposite.

It's worth noting that Fisker last month categorically denied a report from Bloomberg that claimed the Ocean SUV's launch is affected by software integration problems. One of the claims was that some Fisker Ocean EVs are only using a more basic software that limits the vehicles' speed.

Likely in an effort to dismiss that allegation, Henrik Fisker last week posted a video on his LinkedIn page (embedded below) where he could be seen driving an Ocean EV on the German Autobahn at 129 mph (208 kph).

The Fisker Ocean all-electric SUV will be available in three versions – Extreme, Ultra, and Sport – in addition to the Ocean One limited edition launch model that is sold out in several launch markets.

The 360-mile Fisker Ocean One and Extreme, likely the first trim levels to launch in the US, are priced the same at $68,999 (excluding destination). The 340-mile Fisker Ocean Ultra is priced at $49,999, while the base Fisker Ocean Sport, which is estimated to offer 250 miles of range, starts at $37,499.

MASSIVE price cuts, but I wouldn't touch any of these cars with a 10' pole. I don't see Fisker lasting, which means parts availability, service and warranty is likely going to disappear.

Fisker dropped a bombshell when it announced significant price cuts for the 2023 Ocean. The entry-level Ocean Sport with a $24,999 starting MSRP (not including destination) makes it the cheapest electric vehicle in the United States. But after considerable searching and a conversation with Classic Fisker in Atlanta—the only dealership listed on the company's website—we found a problem. It seems this ultra-cheap luxury SUV doesn't exist. Furthermore, the midrange Ocean Ultra at $34,999 might be a fairy tale, too.

Fisker has not returned multiple requests for comment, and we spent 20 minutes listening to Fisker's hold music while seeking a sales consultation. As a last-ditch effort, we sent an email request for 2023 Ocean Sport information through the company's website, and haven't received a reply. However, even with communication roadblocks and the potential for a Fisker bankruptcy, a $25,000 Ocean is still tempting.

The only success we had in getting information came from speaking to a specialist at Classic Fisker. He didn't mince words about the $25,000 Ocean Sport."I would caution you and other customers—Sports don’t exist right now," he said. "The $25,000 Sports, they’re not even here in the US right now. The Ultras at $35,000, they don’t exist in the US right now."

There is a caveat to the Ocean Ultra. The specialist did say Fisker had Ultras in the national inventory, but they all had some level of options that raised the price considerably. And if 2023 Sports do end up arriving in the US now, in 2024, they'd likely be through the Port of Baltimore, which is currently impacted by the collapse of the Key Bridge.

"The base MSRP is not reflective of the optioned MSRP," he explained. "When you look at this sitting inventory, there are no base Ultras available."

This conflicts with Fisker's press release on the price drop for 2023 models, which states some vehicles "come equipped with as much as $7,000 worth of additional options—such as colors, 22-inch wheels, interiors, and other options—included in the discounted price." But in the fine print, Fisker also states that "pricing is subject to change and will be based on your final vehicle configuration."

So, what should you do if you still want to roll the dice on a discounted 2023 Ocean? For starters, forget dreams of an ultra-cheap luxury SUV and aim towards an optioned-up Ultra or an Extreme, which gets the biggest price cut of the bunch at $37,499. Based on what the specialist at Classic Fisker told us, that price could also be a pipe dream depending on the options installed. But, there are Oceans available—roughly 1,000 to 1,500 according to the dealership.

"We’re here to service customers in the state of Georgia, obviously we’ll address customers that want to call us from all over the country and do our best to help," he told us. "If you’re out of state and want to purchase a car, you’re welcome to contact Fisker directly, which is what the majority of customers are doing, and you can purchase any of the available inventory."

If Fisker corporate responds to our requests for comment, we'll update this story.

In short, the end game is pretty near. It could be just a weeks or months from now about a bankruptcy announcement and closure of the company for good.
