The MDX Type-S will likely not be released at the same time as the regular MDX trims. It is likely to be released about 9-12 months afterwards, just like the current brand new TLX.

New Flagship: MDX Prototype Previews Most Premium and Performance-Focused SUV in Acura History

October 14, 2020 — TORRANCE, CALIF.
  • MDX Prototype signals a radical design transformation, with a low and wide stance, long hood and sleek pulled-back cabin evoking a more dynamic character
  • New interior takes a quantum leap forward in craftsmanship, materials and technology, including Acura Precision Cockpit™ all-digital instrumentation
  • Fourth-generation MDX debuts all-new SUV platform with MDX’s first-ever double wishbone front suspension engineered for Type S-levels of performance
  • New MDX to arrive at dealers early next year; MDX Type S to follow in summer of 2021
Today’s unveiling of the Acura MDX Prototype previews the fourth-generation of the class-defining Acura MDX, America’s all-time best-selling three-row luxury SUV1. On sale early next year, the new MDX will assume the flagship role in the Acura lineup as the most premium, performance-focused and technologically sophisticated SUV in Acura history. Twenty years after the launch of the first-generation model, the bold new design and sumptuously appointed interior of the new MDX will be bolstered by an arsenal of new Acura technologies, an all-new performance-focused platform with MDX’s first-ever double wishbone front suspension, and the first application of the Type S high performance moniker to an Acura SUV.

“The new MDX marks a turning point for Acura as our new flagship and the most far-reaching effort yet to deliver on our Precision Crafted Performance brand promise,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and Acura brand officer. “We knew we needed to deliver something more emotional and premium with performance at its core. This new MDX builds on the past 20 years of success and elevates the model to an even stronger position in the market.”

Exterior Design
Enveloped in striking matte finish, the MDX Prototype, shown in both Liquid Carbon and Performance Red, makes a bold statement with its more dynamic and muscular design. The upright grille and long, sculpted hood convey power and presence and are anchored to an even lower and wider body with bulging shoulders and a greenhouse set further back, enabling a 6-inch increase in dash-to-axle dimension.

Signature elements of Acura’s next-generation design language are elegantly integrated with the new more premium and athletic form of MDX, including a three-dimensional Diamond Pentagon grille flanked by four-element JewelEye® LED headlights, underscored by Chicane™ LED daytime running lights, inspired by the Acura ARX-05 race car. The front fascia has been sculpted to highlight the wide grille, integrating fog light housings under side vents that further emphasize the new MDX’s wider track.

In profile view, the 21-inch wheels have been pushed to the corners, giving the MDX Prototype a nearly 3-inch longer wheelbase, aiding both ride quality and more spacious seating in all 3 rows, as well as a larger and more versatile cargo hold. A sharply sculpted beltline connects the front and rear, where the wide-set Chicane™ LED taillights echo the headlight treatment in front.

Next Level Interior
Befitting its new flagship status, the MDX Prototype presages the production model’s more premium and sophisticated cabin design, with a cleaner, more upright instrument panel taking on a wide structural motif. High-grade, authentic materials trim the interior including open-pore wood with infused metallic flake, polished aluminum and soft-touch Milano leather. An elegant mix of Ebony and Light Orchid leather graces the instrument panel and steering wheel with French stitched detailing. Next-generation Acura sport seats offer a more sculpted form with curvilinear quilting in all 3 rows, gradient perforation, and high-contrast stitching and piping.

The MDX’s wider body design enables first-class seating with more legroom in all three rows, and notably more headroom for front and third-row occupants. An ultra-wide panoramic moonroof opens the cabin up to provide natural light to all three rows.

Optimally bolstered Acura sport seats offer 16-way power adjustment and integrated massage functionality with a class-leading nine massage modes to relax the driver and front passenger after an exhilarating drive. Acura’s Iconic Drive™ LED illuminates the entire MDX cabin with 27 different lighting schemes tied to driving modes and representative of various locations, such as iconic roads and race circuits around the world.

Advanced Technology
Featuring a myriad of leading-edge Acura technologies, the MDX Prototype debuts Acura’s all-digital Precision Cockpit™, replacing physical gauges with a customizable 12.3-inch driver’s meter. The new MDX also gains the latest generation of Acura’s intuitive and driver-focused True Touchpad Interface™, featuring an ultra-wide, 12.3-inch, full-HD center display (Acura’s largest implementation yet), Acura-exclusive touchpad with “absolute positioning” and a new CPU for improved performance.

The “Signature Edition” ELS STUDIO 3D® premium audio system in the MDX Prototype sets a new standard for concert-quality in-vehicle audio with more than 1000 watts of power, 22 discrete channels and 25 speakers. This elevated tier of ELS system features six ceiling-mounted Highline™ speakers and six carbon fiber coned mid-range woofers including two positioned innovatively in the front console to create a “Center of the Studio” experience with perfect left to right balance. Tuned and perfected by eight-time Grammy® award-winning music producer and sound engineer, Elliot Scheiner, this is the most advanced and powerful audio system ever offered in an Acura vehicle.

Elevated safety technologies include the latest generation of Acura’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure, with enhanced occupant and pedestrian collision protection capabilities, bolstered by an expanded suite of AcuraWatch™ safety and driver-assistive technologies, including enhanced Road Departure Mitigation, new Traffic Jam Assist and new Low Speed Braking Control. Acura’s next-generation front passenger airbag technology, first seen on the new 2021 TLX and offering improved occupant protection in a wider variety of frontal collision scenarios, will be standard on all new MDX models.

Performance at its Core
The fourth-generation MDX debuts an all-new light truck platform built for athletic handling, refined ride comfort and exceptional cabin quietness. The most rigid Acura SUV body to date, the new MDX is engineered to support Type S-levels of performance as well as advanced collision and pedestrian safety. Anchored to the ultra-rigid new body is a new performance-focused chassis featuring MDX’s first-ever double wishbone front suspension, delivering sharp and sporty handling with improved road holding and ride comfort.

Further aiding handling and all-weather performance is Acura’s available fourth-generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®), the only dynamic torque vectoring technology in MDX’s competitive class, extracting maximum grip and cornering precision from the all-new chassis. Superior stopping performance is enabled with Brembo® four-piston brake calipers, finished in a striking Ivory paint, at all four corners.

Drivers can customize the ride, handling, steering, suspension and powertrain performance characteristics using the MDX’s Intelligent Dynamics System (IDS). The IDS unlocks a wider range of personalized driving experiences through pre-set modes as well as giving drivers the ability to customize an Individual dynamic driving mode via the NSX-inspired Drive Mode dial, positioned prominently on the center console.

Powering the fourth-generation MDX will be one of two new powertrains. Standard power will come from Acura’s 3.5-liter V6 with i-VTEC® valvetrain, connected to an incredibly responsive and refined 10-speed automatic transmission. The upcoming MDX Type S will feature a Type S-exclusive 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 producing an estimated 355 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque, the most powerful engine ever offered in an Acura SUV. All MDX Type S models will put power to the ground through Acura’s fourth-generation SH-AWD® system.

20 Years of MDX
Debuting in 2000 as the North American Truck of the Year, the original 2001 Acura MDX was the industry’s first three-row crossover SUV, defining an entirely new category of vehicles that now dominate the segment. Over the past 20 years, across three generations of development, MDX has established itself as America’s all-time best-selling three-row luxury SUV and one of only a handful of luxury models to earn more than 1 million U.S. customers in the past two decades2. MDX also recently surpassed the TL as the best-selling Acura model of all-time.

The 4th-generation MDX will join its 3 predecessors as designed, developed and produced in North America. The all-new MDX will be built at the company’s East Liberty, Ohio, auto plant, while both the 3.5-liter V6 and new Type S-exclusive 3.0-liter Turbo V6 engines will be produced at the company’s Anna, Ohio, engine plant, which also manufactures the NSX supercar’s twin-turbocharged hybrid V6 power unit. Acura’s 10-speed automatic transmission is built exclusively at the company’s Tallapoosa, Georgia, transmission plant.

It's easily the best looking one ever. Interested to see how the reviews go. I'm just not thrilled with the infotainment. Touchscreens are better.

Yes, the rumors of having the base engine be the RDX turbo-4 was concerning. The venerable 3.5L V6 is bulletproof.

There is not many tall position electric SUVs. Model Y is more like station wagon with turning radius of Tahoe.
Massage seats alone make difference on long drives.

The only car I've had any real seat time in with massaging seats was a W222 S-Class & they really weren't anything special.

Also, the average EV driver is likely not using it for long drives & probably has an ICE car for that purpose.

Curious what the new V6 turbo configuration will be? Curious if it's all new clean sheet design or a exclusive derivative of the J series. Seems odd to make it an all new design just to use it on the Type-S models of the MDX and TLX.

2022 Acura MDX to Make World Debut Dec. 8

December 1, 2020 — TORRANCE, CALIF.
  • America’s all-time best-selling 3-row luxury SUV1 gets its most dramatic and far-reaching redesign in 20 years
  • Bolder inside and out, Acura’s new flagship is the most premium, performance-focused and technologically advanced SUV in Acura history
Acura will reveal the boldly redesigned 2022 Acura MDX on Dec. 8. As the brand’s new flagship model, MDX delivers on the styling, performance and technology showcased in the MDX Prototype. The debut of the 2022 MDX ushers an emotional redesign for Acura’s 4th-generation SUV, sitting atop a new light-truck platform incorporating double wishbone front suspension (an MDX first), and adored with a sumptuously appointed interior loaded with an arsenal of new features and technologies.

Viewers can tune-in to Acura.com/2022-MDX on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. PST for a first look at the new 2022 MDX.

The fourth-generation MDX joins RDX, the best-selling model in its segment2, and the recently-launched TLX sport sedan as the latest model to be designed from the ground up around Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance brand DNA. The new MDX, featuring a 3.5-liter VTEC® V6 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission and available 4th-generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®), will arrive at dealers early next year. An MDX Type S, Acura’s 1st high-performance SUV variant, will follow in the summer of 2021.

The original 2001 MDX was the industry’s 1st 3-row SUV to be based on a unibody platform, with superior comfort, space and driving performance than existing truck-based SUVs. Upon its debut, MDX earned critical praise, including 2001 North American Truck of the Year and 2001 Motor Trend SUV of the Year awards. Over the past 2 decades and three generations of advancement, MDX has earned its place as America’s all-time best-selling 3-row luxury SUV, with cumulative sales exceeding 1 million units.

2022 Acura MDX reveal: How to watch the luxury SUV's debut

It's time for a new MDX, and it should be a real stunner.

Sean Szymkowski

Dec. 7, 2020 1:09 p.m. PT

  • Tomorrow, we're in for a new Acura MDX. Tuesday, Dec. 8 is the date the Japanese luxury brand chose to reveal the luxury SUV and you can watch all the fun unfold right here with us with a livestream of the event in the video player above.

Even though we're yet to see the production car, we already have a really good idea of what to expect from the 2022 MDX. Acura showed off a prototype version of the SUVback in October that basically gave away what the production car will look like. It's hard to see the vehicle changing drastically for production. And if it does, that would be a shame, because it looks quite good. Ditto for the interior.

The headlights and grill narrow on MDX. The side mirrors black on MDX while on RDX it still body colored.
It opposite concept of BMW and Genesis where the bigger the model the larger the grills and lights.

4 series is a more narrower grill and start downward from hood. 7 series is wider and more pronounced on hood.

The 2022 Acura MDX has finally been unveiled in production guise, and no surprise, it looks just like the prototype that was shown a couple months ago. Inside and out, there doesn't seem to be any difference. It also turns out that most of the details given regarding the prototype are the same for the production car. But we do have some more details and specifications, and we even have pricing.

The MDX is completely redesigned from the ground-up. It is the first vehicle to use a new platform for light-truck use, and is not shared with the also recently redesigned Acura TLX sedan. There are similarities, though, as the MDX has a double-wishbone front suspension and multilink independent rear suspension as the TLX has. Acura notes that the chassis is the stiffest crossover/SUV chassis the company has ever created. Acura also added larger front brake rotors; they're 1.2 inches larger in diameter.

It's a bigger body than the previous MDX, too. It's 2.2 inches longer overall, with a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase. It's 1.4 inches wider than the old model, and is about half an inch taller. The proportions have changed significantly with a longer dash-to-axle ratio that gives the new MDX the look of a rear-drive vehicle. The hood is more horizontal, adding length visually. The sheet metal is clean and smooth with only a handful of creases and pieces of trim adorning it.

As for the interior, the design is very similar to the TLX and RDX with chunky, curvy panels. Six different leather colors are available, with the selection varying by trim package. Ambient lighting with 27 different color combinations is also available, and besides the combinations based on the drive modes, they're all named after race tracks and roads such as Suzuka and Route 66.

Only one seating combination is available and it's unique. Rather than offering a choice of a second-row bench seat or captain's chairs, the new MDX effectively offers both. It has a second-row bench in which the middle seat can fold down to provide a large center console, or it can be removed entirely to provide access to the two-seat third-row bench. This versatility means every MDX can hold seven passengers. The third-row bench has also gained 2.4 inches of leg room, and the seat sits another 1.4-inches off the floor, all of which should make the way-back more comfortable. Not only that, but cargo space has increased. Maximum space behind the third row is up by 2.3 cubic feet to 18.1 (ample for the segment), and space behind the first row is up by 4.1 to 95 cubic feet.

The standard MDX gets a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 making the same 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque as the old model. Acura's global development lead noted that the V6 was chosen over the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the TLX because that four-cylinder didn't meet the company's targets for real-world fuel economy, refinement and responsiveness when placed in a three-row crossover. While the engine is carryover, it is now paired to a 10-speed automatic, rather than the outgoing nine-speed. Front-wheel drive is standard, while a new-generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system is an option. The latest version of SH-AWD is 30% faster at sending torque to the rear wheels. Up to 70% of engine torque can be sent to the back, and like past versions of SH-AWD, all of that torque can be sent to either the left or right rear wheel.

Fuel economy numbers for the base MDX with front-wheel drive are 19 mpg city, 26 highway and 22 combined. All-wheel drive models get 19 mpg city, 25 highway and 21 combined.

An MDX Type S is also on the way. It will get the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 shared with the TLX. It makes 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. It comes standard with SH-AWD as well as wider 275-series tires on 21-inch wheels and four-piston Brembo front brake calipers. Acura hasn't given any further details on the Type S, but we should know more when we're closer to its summer 2021 release window.

As for the regular MDX, it goes on sale Feb. 2. The base price is $47,925. That gets you a front-wheel-drive model with 12.3-inch displays for instruments and infotainment. A 350-watt 9-speaker sound system is also standard as is wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Amazon Alexa integration, a panoramic sunroof, and the AcuraWatch suite of driver-assistance features. As before, AcuraWatch includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, but it's been bolstered for 2021 by rear automatic emergency braking and stop-and-go functionality for the adaptive cruise control. All-wheel drive is a $2,000 option on the base MDX and the MDX with Technology Package, and it's standard on the A-Spec and Advance Package models. Base prices for all MDX models are listed below.
    • MDX: $47,925
    • MDX Technology Package: $52,625
    • MDX A-Spec: $58,125
    • MDX Advance Package: $61,675

Acura doesn't have plans for a new MDX hybrid

The turbocharged Type S will be taking the sporty MDX slot

Besides an entirely new platform, suspension, and a turbocharged Type S model coming soon, the 2022 Acura MDX is new in another way: it seems to be losing its hybrid trim level. During a media roundtable, Acura's global development lead confirmed that there are no plans for a hybrid version of the new MDX.

Part of the reason for the lack of a hybrid for the new MDX is the aforementioned Type S model. The Acura development lead noted that the outgoing MDX Sport Hybrid is the current sporty, high-output version of the crossover. That mantle is now being taken over by the Type S with its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The new Type S makes 355 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, which also represents a large power increase over the Sport Hybrid's 321 horsepower and 289 pound-feet.

The Type S won't be able to do everything the Sport Hybrid could do, though. While official fuel economy numbers haven't been revealed, we're confident the Type S won't be able to hit the 27 mpg combined of the hybrid. The Sport Hybrid's powertrain was also quite interesting, as it combined its 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 with a trio of electric motors. A single motor worked in conjunction with the engine to power the front wheels, and one motor each powered the rear wheels and provided torque vectoring. It was sort of like a backwards NSX.

While Acura doesn't have plans for a hybrid right now, it is possible the brand could change its mind. And in an ever electrifying world, it would be surprising if we never saw a hybrid MDX return.

Generation Gap: Ranking each and every version of the Acura MDX

It might not be on your radar, but the MDX is all about practicality and technology

by Benjamin Hunting | 22 hours ago 2022 Acura MDX AcuraThe Acura MDX is a luxury SUV you might not think a lot about. It’s been 20 years since the first version of the upscale people-mover appeared in North America, and with sport-utility vehicles now firmly ingrained in automotive culture, it’s easy to dismiss it as just one of the herd.

And yet, this is the vehicle that introduced parent company Honda to legions of families shopping for a capacious, three-row daily driver, and one that served as a technology test-bed for the company for many of its prime years on sale in Canada and the United States.

All of that makes it tough to decide which specific generations of the MDX are worthy of praise. We thought long and hard about the little details that set one of these crossovers apart from the other, and finally came up with our ranking of each and every version of the Acura MDX ever built.

    2014-2020 Acura MDX YD3

2014 Acura MDX AcuraWhat makes the 3rd-generation Acura MDX the most compelling? Primarily it’s the unique combination of efficiency and performance. Rather than simply lean on hybrid technology as a way to squeeze a few more kilometres out of a tank of gas, when Acura released the Sport Hybrid version of the MDX, it made sure that the multi-motor setup (3 electrics plus a single V6) pushed out more power than the standard gas-only model. With 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque on tap, combined with the instant-on nature of electric motor performance, the MDX was significantly quicker than it had ever been, while still sipping fuel at a rate respectable enough for its size.

This was the 1st real step Acura took towards giving the MDX a sporty edge, and it paid dividends when comparing its character to more mild models from Lexus and Cadillac. Throw in an advanced all-wheel-drive system and adaptive suspension system, and Acura made the Sport Hybrid a legitimate enthusiast option compared to the perfectly practical – but not nearly as exciting – 290-horsepower base model.

    2001-2006 Acura MDX YD1

2001 Acura MDX AcuraThe original Acura MDX enters our rankings at number 2, with an asterisk. Yes, we’re aware that the original batch of automatic transmissions outfitted to the 1st MDX had a higher-than-average failure rate (as did many other Honda slushboxes of the same era) but a quick redesign limited most of the damage to the 1st couple of years of production.

Moving on, the MDX was Honda’s 1st midsize SUV, beating the related Pilot by a couple of years. It offered an all-wheel-drive system that automatically activated when traction loss was detected or predicted (and was lockable for truly sticky situations), as well as V6 power and decent amounts of interior room. Later models saw a slight horsepower boost and mild styling changes, but overall, Acura’s hauler was a modest and comfortable entry point for families seeking a premium sport-utility vehicle.

    2022 Acura MDX YD4

2022 Acura MDX AcuraWe know it’s not out yet, but we do have a surprising amount of information about the upcoming 4th-generation 2022 Acura MDX. Passing over the 2021 model year, the vehicle will introduce a new Type S model with a 355-horsepower turbocharged V6 on top of the base 290-horsepower 3.5L unit. There’s no word on whether the Sport Hybrid will continue after the redesign, but a simplified infotainment system, higher-quality materials, and a sophisticated all-wheel drive option are all present and accounted for.

On the styling front, the MDX gets more chiseled without overdoing it, which should put it in good stead as compared to some of the extroverted luxury options pouring out of Germany of late.

    2007-2013 Acura MDX YD2

2007 Acura MDX AcuraWas the 2nd-generation Acura MDX a particularly bad SUV? Not by any reasonable score, as it carried forward the general mission statement of the originator in terms of practicality and comfort.

Where things went a bit off of the rails was in the styling department. Acura’s decision to bulk up the MDX made it a little too large in the eyes of some loyal customers, but the real faux pas occurred in 2010 when the vehicle was bestowed with the unpopular ‘beak’ front end that made its way through the brand’s entire line-up. As the largest vehicle Acura offered, the MDX was outfitted with the biggest schnozzle, and it became a focal point for complaints that would overshadow the vehicle’s mighty 300 horsepower, up-sized V6 and strong Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system.

It feels somewhat arbitrary to put the YD2 version of the MDX at the bottom of the list, especially considering how, from a modern perspective, the response to the SUV’s grille has mellowed considerably over the years. At the time, however, it was a big enough deal to briefly make the brand the laughing stock of the luxury set, and the MDX suffered for it.

^ My aunt has a YD2 MDX that I briefly considered buying form her. Super low miles & meticulously maintained. But, I think my dad's Denali XL gets better MPG while towing, than that MDX does
That said, it is a really comfortable & nice driving SUV. If it weren't for the appalling fuel economy, I might've seriously considered it. That said, it is less of an issue, not that I drive significantly less than I was at the time. But the Merc is gone & replaced (for now) with the Malibu (which also gets shockingly low MPGs for a 4cyl).

I know the feeling. My economy car does similar for fuel economy as my Jeep around town though that may be slightly associated with how I drive it.

My boss had a YD2 MDX that he took to over 200k miles and it was rock solid up until the end. It was pretty nice but the fuel economy was appalling for the time.

I just can't get over the infotainment interface. That really ruins this thing for me. Other than that it would be a definite contender for our next car.

To be fair 0-60mph in 6.1s and 5-60mph in 7s are pretty respectable figures for a mid size luxury SUV with a base engine.

The GLE 350 takes 6.6s and 7.7s, respectively.

It will be interesting to see how the new MDX will perform.

The infotainment system in recent Acura models are one of those systems that you either love it or hate it. Seems like it's here to stay for at least one generation though.
