390HP Nissan "Z"

Unortunately, not from Nissan, but still...

Driving the Great Eddy
GReddy 350Z

By MARK VAUGHN

IN CASE YOU WONDERED, THE NAME “GReddy” is from the two words, “Great and Eddy.” Eddy isn’t an egomaniacal guy’s name but refers instead to a whirlpool, swirl or hurricane, like one inside a manifold. So GReddy is a great manifold hurricane. Or something.

Don’t let the funky name fool you. GReddy has been making great cars greater for more than 25 years, since 1977 in Japan and 1996 here in America. We drove its latest creation, the car parked on the floor of the SEMA IAS show only days before, the GReddy Nissan 350Z Track Model.

GReddy threw the catalog at this one. It gets twin turbos, an intercooler, six-piston brakes, an electronically adjustable suspension, 19-inch tires, the whole spicy tuna roll.

The turbos are TD05H 18G units with two Type S external wastegates, a three-row Type 23 front-mounted intercooler and an automatic turbo timer to let the turbos cool down without seizing when the engine is shut off. Dialed in at a non-grenading 5.6 pounds of boost, the setup cranks power output (measured on the GReddy Dynojet) to 345 hp vs. 244 stock and 340 lb-ft of torque, vs. 239 stock. The turbo and all of the ancillary engine stuff on our car worked out to cost about $3,700.

We drove the Z on some long, straight, empty roads and have no reason to doubt the manufacturer’s performance claims. Turbo lag is not at all bad and the power and torque are spread out nicely across the tach, not crowded up near redline. GReddy officials say this car will get through the quarter mile in less than 13 seconds at almost 105 mph, more than a second quicker and 5 mph faster than stock.

The Z gets boosted to 345 hp and 340 lb-ft, with $3,700 worth of GReddy products.

That’s the straight-line performance. GReddy also added a very cool Tein Flex suspension kit that adjusts the shock stiffness in the coil-overs front and rear via a small control panel mounted in the center armrest. We tried medium and hard and found the system to be well balanced and the difference noticeable. Jounce and rebound were better controlled than most aftermarket jobs, too. This all added another $2,240.

There were also 19-inch GT-C Volk Racing Wheels and Nitto 555R tires, 235/35Rs front and 275/30Rs rear for $3,845. Brakes are 14-inch vented discs with six-piston calipers estimated at $6,000.

Overall, it’s one of the better packages we’ve seen from the aftermarket—all for a bit under $16,000, less bolt-on costs. There are still problems to sort out before it goes on the market later this summer. For instance: Lift off the throttle suddenly and jump on the brakes and they don’t seem to work at first because the turbo boost pressure has sucked all the assist out of the vacuum lines. And monster-sized brake kits usually only help reduce fade during long lapping sessions; they don’t often cut much distance off your daily stopping results.

ON A WING AND A PLAYER
C-West 350Z

Ever wonder if big wings on all those tuner imports really make a difference? Do they decrease lift at the rear while speeding the laminar airflow over the body? Do the side skirts channel air into a venturi-like vortex of useable downforce? Does Cx over Cd really equal mc squared? Who cares?

Most of the aftermarket wing kits probably wind up slowing the car down, but thanks to its close relationship with NISMO, C-West wings in Japan actually spend time in the tunnel. They are then further refined in the Super Taikyu showroom stock races. C-West says the kits decrease lift front and rear.

But it’s the look that matters here. And the looks we got driving the C-West Z were universal. This was surprising—us not being poseurs in general: We thought others would think we thought we were bad. But no, people loved this car. Young and old, the urban and the suburban, the dope and the phat. Which made driving the C-West Z kind of like driving a very fast, nicely sprung parade float. And we were the grand marshals.

Damn, $4,000 for 390hp, damn.

But if you have a 34k track selling at say 38k (dealer markup) and now turbo it for another 4k, your at THE SAME FREAKING PRICE as the outgoing 300ZX. THe same 300ZX they canceled cause of the high price and low sales. Damn, Nissan is making a KILLING on this car.

that is a good price - looking at the jcw cooperS-37hp for ~$4500+$1000install.

the 300zxtt ran ~14's, this package is still a great deal even if someone were to rack up the price to ~43k, even though it could be as little as ~32k-very comparible to the cobra.

Hearing this makes me wish I didn't lease my Z. BTW, I got my Enthusiast Z for $28.5k ($500 under sticker) which has the same performance as any other Z.

For approx $34-35k, I could have had a sub 13 second car.. DAMN!!!

I like the AXIS 350Z, the yellow one. Saw it at an auto show, it's hot!
