xm antenna installation question

did anyone with the on-star antenna on the roof installed an xm antenna? where did you put it? trunk? it seems like it would look a little funny to have two antennas sticking out on the roof. i am planning on going with delphi which comes with it's own antenna. did anyone try to mount it inside, behind the glass? how is that working. i would appreciate any opinions as well as pictures. thanks!

also, has anyone found a good place to mount delphi unit? I am thinking about mounting it in the glove compartment on the passenger side because i can't think of a better place where it will be invisible. any ideas about that?

I do not have OnStar but I coulndn't stand my Pioneer antenna (mouse shaped) on the roof. I mounted it to the rear window on the outside, centered at the base of the window. I get decent reception, but noticably different from roof mounting when in valleys covered in trees. COme to think of it I drove around with the antenna sitting on the back deck and it wasn't too bad, either. Its good to try the antenna in different spots before you mount it if yoiu are concerned about looks vs. reception.

For mounting, the eyeglass holder may be too small but check that out. i saw some neat Pioneer/Alpine units up there.

i am now thinking about mounting it below the ashtray, in front of the shifter. it would require some cutting of factory pannels as well as modifying the original delphi cradle but should look clean at the end. plus the pannel that i was gonna cut is $20 and i can always return it to factory if needed. i'll post some pics once i get around to doing it. i decided against pioneer/alpine b/c you can only have display if you use fm modulation which i didn't want. the hardwired units as far as i understand will not have the song/station information on the factory radio's little LCD, and they don't come with a separate display. so my only option was the delphi.

I got my antenna wedged up in the front windshield on the dashboard in the middle. Gets perfect reception except for in parking garages and under bridges. I had the installation done by a shop and they put it there...not really sure why they did it there instead of the back shelf...but I guess it looks alright and its behind the radar so you don't really see it.

I placed it on the spolier and then snaked the wires through the spoiler and into the trunk.

I also removed almost all of that plastic "strip" that comes with the XM Antenna.

It works great and looks sweet.

if you have polarized tint you can mount it low on the rear window and it works and looks great
also can be put on the front of the dash if you are really anal about exterior

It would help if anyone has schematics of what's inside the onStar antenna, and what's inside the XM antenna. I'm too scared to take it apart and not be able to put it back again in my 03/navi so I'll leave that to someone else. I'm almost certain we may be able to cram all the necessary stuff in there, although the base of the onStar antenna is pretty small compared to the XM antennae.

i don't know if that would even be necessary. i just bought a new xm roady, the smallest xm radio to date, and it comes with a really small antenna. i just put it on my rear deck between the speaker and the 3rd break light and i have no complains as far as reception goes. this new antenna is tiny and hardly niticeable. so far i've heard a few fall-outs when the rear window is really foggy and if i'm driving on a street with the trees completely covering the view of the sky. my windows are not yet tinted. i've also heard that this antenna has better reception than the previous one. now if that antenna is still too big for you, blitzsafe just came out with an even smaller one. xmfan.com sells it for $30. i'm gonna post some pix once i get my camera back from my friend.
