WTF???...... subs are shot

yesterday i was driving along and my system just shut down. I figured i had a loose wire, so i checked it out. I couldn't figure out the problem. So today i took it to the guy who installed it and he told me my subs blew. WTF?? what are my options now? I got them off ebay. Im thinkin i can call JL and ask them about repair. SE any idea on what i can do??

Are you sure they're blown? Normally, blown speakers still play but sound like garbage(unless they're totally destroyed). It's also odd that both would blow at the exact same time.

I'm willing to bet it's a bad connection or blown fuse somewhere. Have you checked the fuses on the power wire and amp? Is the amp turning on?

When i got back in my car i decided to turn the bass up. What do you know, everything works fine. So for the last 1/2 hour its been playin like nothing happened. I called the guy and told him whats been happenin. He said that the subs might work for a little then go off again. Im gonna wait and see what happens.

I don't think that guy has any idea what the hell he is doing. You may have over extended the voice coil out of the magnet, in which case it is slightly possible that it fell back into place. Or there is something wrong with the wiring. If you fry a voice coil I don't think there is much chance of it working again.

If it stops working again you might try to pull out the sub and attatch a 9v battery to the terminals and see if it pushes out. This will not hurt it but it will tell you if it is the sub or something else.

I hate to tell you but that guy has no idea what he is talking about. If a sub blows - it's not going to play again. It sounds like your amp overheated and shut down - that would explain why it works now. How do you have it wired? If it's 2 ohm mono then that's probably what happened - amps tend to get very hot when pushing those tough loads. If you have the problem again I'd get a fan on it or something to help keep it cool.
