WD media install: power questions

Hi all,

I'm almost done piecing together all the parts I need for my WD media player install. I just need to figure out how I'm going to power this thing. I plan to have this unit it the car always and use it daily to play MP3s off USB, so if it turns off when the car goes off that would be ideal.

The plug power cord on this unit is detachable, has 2 prongs and reads...

Input: 100-240V~ 50-60Hz, 0.5A Max
Output: 12V - 1.5A.

Should I get an power inverter and power it right off the battery, or go with a DC dc converter?

I don't know too much about powering the unit, and I don't want to burn it. So, if you could point me in the right direction as to which unit and specs to use, please do!

Also, the better option would be to use the dc-dc converter from the cig lighter, will tapping from the cig lighter to also power DOM's unit cause any issues?

thanks in advance!

-mike

i am assuming it is the WD media center you are talking about, with the hard drive, card reader, usb hub etc..
what are you connecting this unit to? what kind of headunit?

Its similiar, its the wd media player.

I plan to use the stock nav screen for display. I have dom's unit for video and usaspec for audio. Just trying to figure out my power options.

Power's the easy part. The input on the back is a 12v DC input. I know that the car's electrical system usually runs at about 13.4v when the car's running, but it'll be fine at that. I'd get an add a fuse adapter from any parts store and tap into one of the fuses that's powered on with the keys.
