viper 790/791 remote programming

I have a Viper 790XV alarm/remote start. my controller recently died and i bought one for a 791XV which according to several of my installer buddies would be compatible. however, i cant seem to get the new controller programed. the alarm set/ and open fumctions are the only things working (and i have to use the lock button for both functions). i followed the auto- reprogramming instructions that came with the remote.

Anyone have an idea of whats wrong?

now is a time when i could really use my remote starter

you are programming it for single button configuration. Do this to program it correctly:

1. open the driver door and leave it open
2. put the key in the ignition and turn to the on position
3. with in ten seconds, press and release the valet switch 8 times, and then on the ninth time hold it.
4. if you have done this correctly, you will hear the siren chirp 8 times.
5. if you have heard these chirps, then press the lock button on the new remote, as soon as you have pressed the button you will here the siren chirp again.

at this point you can turn the key back to the off position and you will have programmed your new remote for standard configuration.
