upgrade speakers

i want to upgrade the speakers in my '99 TL-P.. i hate the way the speakers and sub handle.. does anyone have any suggestions?? don't want to spend too much money, so do i need a better amp than that stupid stock one or is it just the quality of the speakers?.. lots of distortion from that "sub" back there.. i'd like to buy speakers and unplug that thing, and hopefully that'll sound good.. will aftermarket speakers sound ok with that amp or is the amp the problem?? also, i've heard that connecting speakers to that stock system is a pain in the neck.. is this true??.. i don't need crazy bass, i just want something that sounds clearer at a higher level with half decent bass

I'm wondering the same... Because my other Maxima has a stock BOSE system and I wanted to upgrade the deck... To do that the dealer and CAR-TOYS said I'd have to replace the speakers too... So I looked around and found a bypass... Worked like a charm! Have a NICE Alpine deck now! But I'm wondering if changing the speakers ALONE would have any defects???

in the acura you can change out the speakers and keep the factory h/u and amp but i am going to warn you that the new speakers won't sound all that much better because of the factory EQ. you would be better off changing the H/U and getting the true full range output of the factory speakers (you would be pleasantly surprised by their response for factory speakers.) The reason you can do this in the acura and not in the maxima is because the acura has a 4ohm standalone amp that is going to be relatively compatible to any full range speaker on the market. In the maxima (depending on the year) the system is a 2 ohm load and there are amps on each of the speakers. that is whay you would have to bypass the factory wiring (which isn't really that hard, all you do is knock two wires out of the loop on the factory speaker harness) and change the speakers to a 4ohm speaker.

if you by pass the eq by adding a new head unit and keeping the stock speakers wont you lose all the highs in the music?

no, by virtue of the stock eq being a part of the stock h/u, adding a ned h/u inplace of the stock one will actually open up the speakers to play full range output

i know..but isnt the stock eq there because our tls lack tweets for the highs so the eq is over bright to make up for it?

well they don't have the greatest factory tweets ever, not even relatively decent, but I assure you that you will get your highs by removing the factory EQ from the loop. The down side is you will want to end up changing the speakers not to long after though because the highs, and even the mids to a lesser degree aren't quite that great.

what I was talking about was KEEPING the HU and changing out the speakers by bypassing EQ settings- just how complicated is that - or could I fit 02 Accord 6-disc in that space? That way I can have a 6-disc (i have an 00TL) and NOT have the Bose settings.

I thought about doing the EQ bypass as was demonstated in a few threads here, but in the end i decided that it was less thought and less room for error to just switch over to another h/u as for using a 02 accord radio, the harness's are ther same if my memory is serving me correctly, but i'm not sure about the dimensions.

the eq is seprate from the H/U and its not that hard to bypass from what ive seen. and instead of using the accord H/U use the 2003 TL H/U, its a 6 disc also and it plugs right in
