Question TL stock speaker - replace or not?

I just wonder how many of you have replace the TL stock speaker (one way Bose). Does it make a lot of difference to replace it with a 2 or 3 way speaker? Any particular brand recommendation?

Depends on the manner in which you listen to your system. If you enjoy music, I would suggest changing them. I have never been a fan of stock speakers. Even upgrading them but keeping the same size or style (ie 6.5 coaxial) is fine. Depending on your pocketbook there are many choices. I love MB Quarts, but they are expensive. You can get a nice set of Bostons for a good price.

I'd like to do the same thing...So, all I would have to do is take the Bose out and drop the new ones in? Any special connections? Would I need a new amp?

I just want to understand...you can change the 4 door speakers without adding amps, new wire, or line converters? Was told by BOSE that this was not possible.

I guess I am wondering the same thing. I would love to add new speakers to the stock locations without and mod's to it. The money is not the problem. I just have no clue what to get. Boston's? MB Quarts? What size would I need? I don't wish to change the deck at the moment at all.

As for the subwoofer. I don't wish to build a box for the trunk. I need all the trunk space I can get. I would like to change the Sub but do they make a sub I could just stick up there in place of the other one? What size would I need?

I just want to get great sounding, decent hitting music. I mostly listen to Ska, punk, alt, type music so I am not a bass freak anymore.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

When changing the speakers in the TL, I would also recommend going with an aftermarket amp. For one, the 1 ohm impedance of the stock unit presents a problem in itself. Two, what kind of clarity can you really expect to gain out of adding just new speakers....a slight improvement, sure, but nothing that will be very dramatic and makes you say "wow, glad I got these". The speakers that are in there are 5 1/4"s. I put 6 1/2's in but you need to make a spacer and possibly cut away some of the metal depeding upon which speaker you choose. Speakers themselves are personal preference. I mean boston, mb, polk, focal, etc...are all good speakers (focal wins over all of them hands down in my opinion), but they all have there ups and downs to the CONSUMER and your own listening habits. Never the less, I would still recommend adding aftermarket amp if you upgrade to new speakers.

Street, I am able to add an aftermarket AMP to the Stock Stereo? I am just not ready to cut out the main stereo just yet. I have an extremly good amp lying around the house here that I was going to sell on Ebay. Its the Soundstream PICASSO amp.

Also for the Subwoofer? What would you suggest? I prefer to keep the stock location in tack as I said before the trunk is important to me.

There are quite a few topics about this if you only go back to SHOW ALL TOPICS you can look thru all our posts. I have pics of my install of new spkrs and amps.

The stock Bose speakers are 6 inches in diameter, exactly.

The stock spkrs connect to the Bose system with very thin 22 guage wires and clip-type terminals to attach to the Bose spkrs (you'll have to cut those off and solder slide-on terminals in their place). I chose to replace all my spkr wiring since I installed amps too.

The sub in the rear deck is 9" in diameter and very shallow. It's that way to allow room for the trunk lid torsion bars under the rear deck. I don't think you'll find a 9" sub anywhere or an 8" that is shallow enough to fit there.

Yes, you can definitely keep the stock headunit and run an aftermarket amp with a line converter. Nice amp you have there by the way.

Anyway, as for the stock sub...Fitting a sub in there isn't really the problem. The problem is that right below the sub are the tensioners for the truck lid and getting a sub in there without hitting anything will require modification. An 8" freeair would probably be the route to go if you wanted to experiment with it. I can't give you a DEFINITE answer on this since I have not tried to put anything else in there. I can only go on the work I have done in the car thus far and from looking at where the sub mounts and all. Sure, anything CAN be done, just a matter of modification to the car.

Well by mods to the car I just didn't want a box taking up the trunk space. A little mod here and there is fine for me.

Yeah I love that AMP. I just sold my other one on Ebay. It was the Soundstream Class A 10.0 Amp. They are wonderful amps.

I know you would recommend a new amp, but is it absolutely required? Are there any efficient aftermarket speakers (Infinity? Alpine?) that could run with 1 ohm impedence?

The sound difference might not be overwhelming with only speaker upgrades, but I would think it changing out paper speakers would at least be noticeable (unless there is a crossover problem I am not aware of).

This question has been asked in many threads, but never definitively answered. Please provide the final word.
