Those with aftermarket subs -- What did you do with the factory built-in sub?

I'm getting subs installed in my car sometime this week, and I was wondering what I should do with the factory Bose sub in the back. I'm putting the aftermarket subs in the trunk, two 10"s, 800 watts. Nothing crazy, just for a little added bump. Should I leave the stock sub alone, or unhook it?

Thanks.

My opinion would be to at least unhook it. You can then decide if you want to remove it or not. I took mine out thinking it might allow some bass to filter in thru the hole but, I really did not notice any difference with it still in. But, I would for sure unhook it.

Agree 100%. I took mine out, didn't notice much of a difference. Too lazy to put it back in.

I took mine out and deposited it in the local dump. No need for it to be there.

Leave it in. It won't hurt to have it there. Just unhook it. That way you've got your back covered if you ever need to sell your car or your Sh!t gets jacked.

I forgot to say that my car is leased. If I just unhook it (is it easy to do?), and leave it in, will it be ok?

See, I was thinking that since I'm adding two 10"s, a third 9" sub would be nice to have along with it. No??

Just unplug the quick connector at the sub. Again, you should without a doubt unhook it. It will just muddy up your system if you do not.

I explored this very same issue last year. First of all, at the very least unplug the factory sub. Then the question of whether to leave it in or take it out and leave the hole open depends on the type of sub box you have.

I have a sealed sub enclosure and I can tell you that i experimented and your bass response will be much better with the stock sub left in. Bass response will be tighter.

Also to consider is that the factory sub, being left in but unplugged, will act as a passive radiator, given the air pressure generated in the trunk by your new subs. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not though. The one thing i have not had a chance to do is to make a steel plate, then remove the stock sub and place the plate over the stock sub opening to seal it up without the facotry sub. This would tell whether the passive radiator effect of the unplugged stock sub is beneficial or harmful to overall bass response.

If you have a ported sub enclosure, you will probably benefit by removing the stock sub and leaving the opening for the bass to vent into the interior.
