Sweet New CHEAP MP3 Installation !

Hey guys, check out these 2 links
http://www.arkon.com/SF120.htm
http://www.arkon.com/SF100.htm

The devices basically let you hook up externall players-- especially MP3 to your audio system by using the FM channels. It sounds really cool but:

* I'm not sure if the sound quality is acceptable for standard consumers
* How long will 1 battery last for the SF120 model ? I'm no engineer expert so I'm looking @ the detail specs and still don't know jack.
* or there's the car kit version but I'm wondering if I can hook that into the trunk of my car..

Ultimately, I'd like to hook an MP3 discman (into the trunk) w/ wireless remote (in the front).

What do you guys think about this?

NOOOOOO~~~!!!
dont get it...those things are horrible~ hissing noise all the time.
if your gonna use that mp3 player....then use one of those TAPECD thingy(those tapes with a wire coming out to plug into portable cd players).... plug it into your mp3 player and use your car tape player.

What he said...

Personally, I'm thinking about getting either an Archos or Nomad 20 GB (or perhaps just a 6 GB) MP3 unit w/ cassette adapter for my car. Sure, the dynamic range and response won't be as good as a CD player since obviously the audio dynamics on a cassette player isn't as near good as those of a CD player, but heck--300+ continuous hours of music (100+ with the 6 GB model) is hard to beat...

I was thinking about that type of solution myself. Wouldn't your existing head unit need a 1/8th stereo miniplug line-in in order to use this?

No--I was referring to using those cassette adapters like the ones that are used for hooking up Discmans to your car stereo. You stick the miniplug end of the adapter into the line out/headphone jack on the MP3 player and insert the cassette portion into the cassette deck opening of the car stereo deck. Not exactly neat from an aesthetic standpoint, nor would it provide sound dynamics equivalent to that from playing an actual CD in the CD player itself (but better than the acoustics from playing an actual cassette tape), but it works.

That's just an FM modulator...honestly I wouldn't use one if you're worried about quality...it will get you by...and it's easy to use...but it doesn't sound all that great. You'll get at best radio quality sound...and at worst fuzzy sound. You'd be better off wiring a stereo jack into your sound system with a swith to switch it...
