Subwoofer Performance

Hey everybody.
Just wanted peoples input and opinion on how things went for them. I currently have infinity speakers installed in all 4 doors of my '03 tl-s. I've done the Bose bypass and the speakers sound 100x better than before. My only beef is with the subwoofer. Seems as though the subwoofer is exaggerated now and it's clearly something the factory sub was not meant to deal with. So I've decided to finally upgrade my deck. I have a Pioneer Avic navigation deck that I'll be installing soon enough and I've done the research and am prepared to hack it so that I can use the factory subwoofer and have the deck control the volume. I'm not heavy into bass. Obviously I like tight and controlled bass but not loud and shakey bass.
Does anyone here have any experience with this mod? How does the subwoofer perform? (understanding the type of bass I like)
If the bass is kinda lame on this I will eventually spend the $$ on a sub and amp, but I wanted to try this one first atleast.
Thanks for the input!

Ive done that same mod dude, and to be honest it did not sound good. I think i can relate to you interims of the bass levels and that shaky bass is not my friend either. Ive spent enough time on it but IMO it was a waste. There are guys on this forum who have switched the stock bose sub to a kicker. I did not want to go through with that, (however they did the mod for specific reasons of space conservation and having the car look stock, which makes perfect sense). For space conservation, just get a 10'' with a small amp which you can mount under the back seat, and its done.

Most of Pioneer's new models allow for a sub hook-up directly from the HU. But as DYKYY mentioned, it's not going to sound very good.

Try imagining this:

- HU amp, tiny, small, inferior MOSFET power supplies, 70watts MAX with crazy levels of distortion to the sub.
- small dedicated amp, 100 watts, fits under your seat, low levels of distortion, high quality MOFSETs.

Which one would you go for?

^I concur. I replaced mine with a shallow mount pioneer, It's mounting depth is only 2.5". They are on ebay for $75 and easy to install. I'm still running the factory deck, but I have a remote gain control from the rockford amp, powering my sub, this solves the control issue. I would love aftermarket nav, but I can't afford it.

If you have a rockford amp, I def. reccomend the PPB1 control, It's $25 and it will not only allow you to control gain, but also the frequency.

This may help some. FYI Alpine is releasing new generation of "Type R" subwoofers in a couple months that has the same sound/performance specs as the Type R subs they are selling now but will only need 1/2 the depth to mount them.
