sub wiring question

Can a dual 4 ohm sub be used as a 4 ohm mono sub?

I know it can be used as a 2 or an 8, I'm just curious as to what would happen if you only use one set of the voice coils?

I am not sure what would happen but, all the dual voice coil subs I have had say that both voice coils must be used.

Yeah, me too. I have a set of IDQ 10s with DVC 4s I want to sell to a guy. The problem is he wants to mount them in separate cars, i.e. one per car. He's looking to get by on a major budget plan, so I'm going to sell them to him for $110. I'm going to help him install the systems but he won't be able to afford an amp capable of driving a 2 ohm mono load with his budget.

I know my JBL will fry these as quickly as it did my IDQ 12s, so I'm going to unload them and get an IDmax sub.

What kind of budget is he dealing with? Here is a RF mono amp 200Watts @ 2ohm
http://www.audio-warehouse.com/detail.asp?mdl=200M
Detailed Description of the 200M:
200M Amplifier
Rockford Fosgate 200M Punch Mono Power Amplifier
100 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
200 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
Requires 10-gauge power and ground leads
Selectable 50-210 Hz variable low-pass crossover, 12 dB per octave
TRANS•ana circuit designs keep voltages low and signal paths simple in the pre-amp section, for minimum distortion and maximum musicality
MEHSA provides more efficient transfer of heat from MOSFET output devices to the heatsink for cooler operation
TOPAZ — noise-killing differential inputs that eliminate 80% of ground loop noise
NOMAD — advanced protection circuitry for "intelligent" shutdown protection
Speaker and preamp level inputs
Switchable Punch Bass boosts bass +6 or +12 dB at 45 Hz
Dimensions: 10-1/2"W (7-13/16" without endcaps) x 2-7/16"H x 9-7/8"D

I would run them @ 8 ohms before I would try running one voice coil. Maybe less power but, at least it would work until he could afford more.

This guy isn't in our league. He wants me to put together an entire system for ~$500.

I just finished doing so using all Pioneer gear including much of the installation accessories.

This is a low end system for someone who doesn't have the $$$ to blow and only wants to have a system that sounds better than the factory BS he got in his Dodge RAM.

When I'm done installing it, he'll $hit his pants compared to the factory BS.

Sadly, I won't be able to sell him my IDQs with a clear conscience. Yes, they'd be cheaper than the sub I've picked for him, but they'd drop the amp output in half.

Thanks again for your help.
