sub in rear seat pass through
Anyone ever do this? A 8" kicker (square type) would fit perfectly in there and only requires .5 cu ft
the 10 could also fit.

is this a waste of time?

In terms of physics, a square speaker will not sound as good as a round one. I've never heard one in person, so I don't know for sure. If I were you, I would use a round 8" facing forward, ported forward.
I'm actually in the process of buying components for a new system in my car right now. I'll be taking a look in the trunk to see what can be done. My initial feeling is to build a box for a single DVC 10" Orion XTR (old school baby!) that's ported through the back deck and powered by an old Rockford Punch 100. Not looking for license plate rattling bass, just some tight impact.
Pretty much anything can be done, just depends what you want and how far you are willing to go to make it happen.

CLevr098,
Would one 8 with a decent mono amp in a professionally built box sound decent? I'm not trying to replicate what 2 12's would sound like, i am just looking for some bass without having to blast the stereo. I'm also intersted in keeping the trunk looking stock.
So if i do go with the 8 in the pass through, i should had the sub facing forward, and have the port coming through the rear deck? That seems cool and very feasible to do.
I'm willing to bail on the sub in the pass through idea if someone had a better spot for sub. spare tire well is not an option either.
ahh, i'm to impatient. i'm going to the local sound shop to see what they say.
Thanks.

subs firing backwards are always gonna sound better than ones facing forwards cuz the sound is able to resonate better .........down firing it is also a good option.......if you can tho, get a ported box made with the specs that kicker provides, or one of their pre-made ported boxes......either one'll sound awesome without takin up a whole lotta room

A rear-firing sub may be louder due to resonance, but it's highly subjective to say it's better. Most "audiophiles" would cringe at the thought of boosting bass in this way as it results in boomy smeared bass. In high-quality applications, most installers go through great lengths to ensure there are no resonant frequencies.
To get an idea of the difference, take a small pair of bookshelf speakers and put them facing into the corner. The bass will be noticeably louder from corner loading. Turn them around and it is tighter (but [a lot] less of it).
Depending on your preference, either could be "better" than the other. I'm personally going to put a 8" square kicker in the passthrough.... there's about a 1" gap between the hatch and the armrest which should make for a perfect stealth installation. Let us know how the install goes and more importantly, how it sounds.
