Steering Wheel Radio Controlls

I'm hard-wiring my Passport 8500 soon and I really only need the mute button off of the remote smart cord. I'd like to re-direct that button to one of the 3 on my wheel that I lost when I ditched my stock stereo. Anybody know if the remote volume/channel controll is a simple open/short switch that I can tap into using a wiring harness?

i believe volume up and down / channel select is all done by resistance. Its been awhile since i played with mine...but if i recall correctly there are resistors in line w/ different values...
hope this helps

yup, i believe that system works on resistance. but did you know you can restore the stock steering switches as long as the headunit you bought is infrared-capable (good idea to buy the remote if it didn't come with one). pac and lightning audio sell the swi adapter.
