speaker wire size for components..

typically speaking, whats the smallest size wire you should run for the components? i need the length to be about 16 or 17 feet on each side and i have 16guage wire for the speakers.. is that enough or should i go 12guage?

personally i think that 16g would be plenty... i think that 12g would be a little over kill not to mention a little extra money...
