Speaker upgrade
My experience is with the 2nd gen TL (2001), but here it is. Tried just replacing the speakers, but the Bose EQ made the sound pretty bad, plus not very much volume. I used a line driver to bump up the preamp signal--the system is loud, but not as clear as one would like. Now I'm waiting for my amp to arrive. What started out as a simple speaker replacement ended up being an $1100 system upgrade spanning several weeks. (No labor, just parts; I'm doing everything myself).
So, I guess my advice would be this: don't go down that road unless you're prepared to upgrade the whole system. Also, keeping the head unit can be done, but it's harder and more expensive. (I did it to preserve the stock look and increase security).
Hey, I thought the new TLs had excellent sound systems!?

I'm in the same situation as you are. I like MBQuart ( they have unreal highs !!!)
Derrick is 110% correct. That's how my BMW upgrade started out. Needless to say part of the system consisted of a Stinger 1 farad monitor top capitor and was powering 2 amps through 0 gauge wire !!!!! enough said.
I'm intrigued by how large of an 8" sub can fit into the factory location. Any thoughts?

I've been thinking of what kind of sub could fit in my '01 as well. I don't know about the '04's, but on mine I think the bracket holding the trunk springs would have to be cut out and replaced.
Last time I put speakers of a different size in the rear deck, I bought 1/4" aluminum plate to make the adapters. Works very well because it's so rigid. I think you'd want to do that, PLUS extend the alumninum over as great an area as possible--because a real sub would be too strong for the rear deck. (I mean it would vibrate and boom like crazy).
The other thing that concerns me is the need to build some kind of enclosure below the deck (to avoid using the sub free-air) with the springs in the way.
