remote starters.
remote starters.
also i know it doesnt work on manuel trannys, but i was wondering how remote start works?
i mean you start the car from a ways away, then you reach the car. the car is already started so what do you just put the keys into the ignition? and restart the car? how does this work?

it's pretty simple to explain. the brain of the remote starter takes power off of your 12v constant wire in your ignition bundle and uses it to give power to the wires of the car that are needed to start it. From there depending on what unit and what kind of set up you do it will "warm up the engine" and run the car until you either turn it off using the remote, hit the brake, or pop the hood (assuming you use a hoodpin). All that aside once you have started the car using remote start all you have to do is get into the car put your key in the ignition and turn it to the on position and tap the brake and the car will stay on and running and you can then go on your way driving
If you go to any reputable installer they can get it to work with the stock alarm. Mine is a DEI unit and works with my factory alarm. I hit unlock 3 times and the car starts.
To explain how it works is simple.....when you get in the car it is already running. If you step on the brake it will kill the engine and the car will stop running. However if you get in the car and put the key in the ignition and turn it to the 'On' position (you DO NOT crank it) then tap the brake pedal and the car is in your control.
Its definately a nice feature to have....sometimes in the winter i run into 7-11 or something and i want to leave the car running but just don't want to leave the keys in it so you can just tap the unlock button on the door 3 times and the car will remain running when you remove the key

i have been working on my alarm for some time (not necessarily installing it, but researching all the electrical wirings or the car to learn what would be possible to do from the alarm. here is what I have learned:
DEI alarms (i.e. Viper, Sidewinder, etc.) have negeative voltage inputs which given that the stock alarm has a negative output (I am assuming it does given Arn's testimonial) means you can install an alarm and keep the stock acura key fob.
next, now i'm not sure if this hold true for newer tl's but for the 99-00TL the myth about having to use a second key hidden in the dash to add remote start is just that, a myth. The ignition works off a chip with in the ignition cylinder the receiver a certain frequency from our key. This is called a transponder system DEI makes a module that taps into this system, determines the frequency and brodcasts it to the key cylinder to allow remote starting to take place.
Also alot of people worry about locating the alarm in the car and that it could be still suseptible to theft. The TL offters a lot of great hidiing places, the best I've found so far is under the center console and/or behind the radio. you don't have to worry about running the wires under the hood either. other than the siren (which can be replaced with a pezo indash horn) every wire needed to get the alarm/remote start to work is in the dash.
