radar question, what the hell is it?

Hey guys, I recently got a Passport 8500, and on the way home from work today a cop was on the side of the road, outside his car clocking people.........I'm guessing it was laser, but whatever it was I didn't pick it up at all, and he definately had it on. Is it that hard to detect laser signals, or is it something else? Kinda freaked me out that nothing got detected after spending $300 on this damn thing, just lucky I happened to be obeying the posted speed limit!

Did he point it at you and click it? I'm not sure how those handhelds work. Did he actually have people pulled over? Maybe he is there just to slow you done and freak you out like he succedded in doing with you. I have those cop suv's all around town that display how fast you are going when you drive by them but have never seen anyone get pulled over when passing one too fast. I have also seen cruisers with dummy's sitting in them and I'm not talking about the actual cop. no offense to cops on the board.

Where is your passport mounted?

Maybe he is prototyping the super undetectable stealth radar gun.

Or it could be as simple as a stopwatch! He's timing you through two fixed points to determine your speed. No electronic defense available for that!

Depends on what the device was and what he was doing. Many stationary radar operators won't trigger at every vehicle because then they broadcast their position to everyone in the area with radar detectors. They wait until they see a vehicle that is obviously traveling faster than the pack and activate the device to verify their observation (a.k.a. instant-on). So although he had it aimed it may have been on standby.

If it was a lidar unit he could have been aiming at the car behind you (or in front of you or beside you) and most likely your detector is not going to pick it up. Or again, like radar--he could have just been waiting to trigger on a fast car and wasn't transmitting anything when you went by.

Worst case scenario, it was a newer MPH Speedgun with the POP technology. He could be shooting right at you and your detector won't go off.

If you were painted by laser/lidar, you are too late. I was on I-4 once (right lane) and the car on the left lane (half car length head of me) got painted. My passport 8500 lid up "LASER" and made the churp for 1 sec. Then the car on the left lane got a visit from Officer friendly. Unless you have Laser Jammer, detectors are useless against laser.
