Radar detector hard wiring

Anyone hard wire their radar detector into either the fusebox or overhead map lights for power? Trying to get rid of the cable running down the side of my nav display

I wired my V1 into a switched 12V line in the overhead. I routed the cable along with the rearview mirror one up into the overhead. It's easy to do. Just remove the two screws in the sunglass holder compartment, then pry the lights out (where to pry is in the manual) and there's two bolts there. The assembly just comes right out after that. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage on the line and find one that's switched (goes dead when the car is off / 12V when the car is running). I didn't do any splicing b/c the V1 comes with a device for tapping a line without cutting it. I think you can buy something similar at Radio Shack. I used one of the screws above the lights for ground. Works like a charm.

I just hard wired my Passport 8500 the other day. It fits perfectly above the rearview. Anyhow, the wire running from the mirror up to the overhead console is wrapped with a foam type electrical tape. If you pull the tape back, you'll find three wires inside. The one that I tapped into that is switched is black with a yellow stripe. The other two, black with white, and black with silver are unneccesary if you use a screw for your ground as I did. The wire chase that the mirror's cable runs up is a great place to run your power wire. There's plenty of room in there for another wire.

What you guys should look into is an intagrated rader detection system. I recently purchased the passport sr-7. It uses rader and laser sensors that can be discretly mounted in your front bumber grill area, and the rear on your back liscence plate. Then they wire into a brain that goes under your dash. And finaly to a small display that you can mount anyware. The advantages are obvious, totaly hidden instalation so even if you get pulled over they will never know you have it, and increased range, since the sensors dont have to go thru glass or any other material which for laser can be up to a %82 reduction in sensitivity. Plus it comes with a duel color LED that you can mount if you want to keep the full display hidden. Its a little more costly and profesional instalation is recommended but the benifits are well worth it.
