Radar Detector Decision

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot but im kinda taking a guess. If theres a better place, mods please feel free to move it.

anyway, ive got some bonus money from last month and im looking to probably buying a decent radar.

Ive been looking at both the V1 and the 8500x50, i know there is about $100 difference but is it really worth spending that much?

Also where is the best place to buy it? Would it be worth getting it someplace else (the x50 is sold at best buy) and would it still have the warrenties and what not?

Thanks in advance

some people swear by the V1.....some say u can't live without the arrows....

i personally have the X50 and its saved me MANY times with tickets....i can promise u that....well worth the money...even though you can't do anything about Laser....you can still tell when ur being tagged so u can be extra cautious or slow down if ur within range....the V1 i don't believe it picks up laser...correct me if im wrong....and its bulky and not very nice looking...and i personally like how the x50 blue version goes well with the interior

hmm well thats two for the x50... the v1 seemed to have just upgraded certain things and what not... so thats another option....

is there a place where you guys suggest me to get the x50?
another reason why i was tossing this up was that my girlfreind's father has the blue x50 and he has mailed his in atleast 3 times already becuase there was many problems with it randomly shutting off and restarting and other werid bugs. im not too sure if they fixed his problem but i know he wasnt very happy with having a $350 windshield ornimate

I have the V1, I had an X50, I used them both side by side on a 2,000+ mile roadtrip. Been V1 for me ever since

Get the V1. Well worth it. Orlando uses alot of KA, so the V1 works very well. You can even turn off X band.

check out Beltronics RX65. Its cheaper than both of those two. Also beltronics was just bought out about a year ago by Escort and they now share the same research and technology department. I just bought one a week ago and have been very happy with it so far.

you can do things about laser. you can get a system wired in the car dedicated to jamming radar and they work.

im still sorta skeptical...didnt the saying go you get what you pay for?

espeically what are we talking price difference.... something significant arises question and something miniscule would make me want to spend the extra money and get something that has that pedigree and history behind it

mind you they are illegal, and the attention that you need should be better put out to watching out for them and an eye on you radar. maybe if i drove 100% highway and did 5,000 miles a month.

most of mine are city driving in the dark on side and back roads where they could be lurking...

LASER JAMERS are not illegal. RADAR JAMERS are.... 2 different things.

Laser jammers come with a switch that allows it to be turned off so after you slow down enough the cop can read your speed. If you past the cop & he doesn't get a reading cause you left the jammer on, he might just chase you to see what's up.
I wouldn't trust a belltronics. I don't care who bought them out.

The only advantage I see with the V1 is the arrows. It's nice to see from what direction your getting tagged from. I've been is situations where it's saved me.
From a performance standpoint, I tested both & saw little difference.

illegal or not, its more work than really necissary. unless im on a road trip and exceeding triple digits on cruise control, then i really dont need.

anyway, hmm so basically right now its 100 bucks more for arrows?

i've yet to read that, got a link? Don't see how they'd screw each other up, they both worked, just the V1 worked earlier

let me see if i can find it. the general nature of the product though can be replicated through other types. meaning that when were using sensors on projects here they have to be separated by a certain distance... granted they are much more sensitive than a radar. let me see who did it tho, someone had all three tests on a video
ill look some

... another + for the Bel RX65. Buy one off eBay to save some money and you'll be even happier. It works great, and has similar to better features compared to V1. The extra money spent on the V1 buys you the arrows, which are a sharply divided issue. Some people say you can't live without them, other say they're pointless, since practical driving dictates you should still slow down to identify the threat.

I'm in the latter camp. I like my detector and I like the money I saved. I'm sure some V1 fan will come along and extoll its virtues and why its the only thing to buy, but don't let them blind you. The RX65 and its near-twin-brother the 8500 x50 are both great as well.

Yeah, that's the only real difference. I had an 8500 now I have a V1.

Don't think of a radar detector as a purchase. Think of it as an investment, cause if it gets you out of 1 or 2 tickets, it paid for itself.

I say V1 all the way. It is all about the arrows. With the arrows you can tell if the threat is coming from the traffic coming towards you from the other side of the freeway. In those situations you don't have to slow down as much. I've found when I had a radar without the arrows, I would just get paranoid and be checking all my mirrors and looking around me trying to find where he was at.

Correct me if im wrong, but i believe the V1 can also be updated if your unit is out of date. So you really never have to worry about throwing it away and getting another radar detector again.

The consealed display is also pretty sweet.

i thought both the v1 and x50 did also...
im more leaning towards the x50, i really cant justify the price difference and assuming im wiring all of this myself, why cant i use the outlet plug with mute button on the x50...
hmmmbut those arrows are nifty..
idk i still cant justify it

Anyone with actual use experience with the Escort Solo S2, the wireless model that works off batteries (smart cord compatible too for longer use/trips)? The convenience of not having to run wires or cord sure make it appealing that way. If you have used the Solo and been able to compare against the X50 or V1, what did you think? Thanks.

dont bother with the solo. my freind had one on his 5series, it worked and he swears by it but it shuts off when its not in use. to me that doesnt seem very well.. honestly if u can plug it in plug it in. he changes the batteries every three days ususaly.

if ure getting a deal on it then go for it, but im not even going to consider it...

oh yeah, appararently V1 doesnt have any vendors, does any one know if they ever have sales?

"it shuts off when its not in use"

Regarding the Solo, this is a battery saving function and the shut off occurs when it senses that there has been no movement in the vehicle/solo for about 20 minutes. It doesn't shut off because of lack of radar detection just motion so if you forget to turn it off when you stop your car, then it automatically shuts off 20 minutes later.

I am using one now and no problems with the batteries for the first two weeks and been using it daily during commute to work. It shows the battery strength in a meter and it still shows full strength.

I can return or exchange for first 30 days so wondering if others have tried Solo and been satisfied or dissatisfied. Thanks.

I know some have on this board & wrote up reviews. Try seaching.

And the V1 can only be bought direct from them. Well... Ebay too.

Already tried search for Solo reviews and found none thus raised the question. Last reference seemed to be in 03 and wasn't a user's comment or review. Perhaps no recent users of the Solo in this forum.

V1 all the way. The arrows are amazingly informative.

A lot of my friends had the V1 before I did, and I was like "what's the big deal?" Then I ran one in my car for a while (a friend went out of town and I asked to test drive one)... when he came back, I didn't want to give it back. So I went and bought one of my own.

The V1 is a permanent fixture in my car. It's hardwired, but on top of that, I just simply can't drive without knowing that V1 is protecting me. I speed quite a bit, and although I'm always on the look-out for cops, V1 helps tremendously.

I've also test driven the Escort 8500 and I was totally not impressed. I had no regret giving that one back to my friend.

Oh, and as for the radar detectors screwing each other up side-by-side, the V1 has a magnesium casing which helps prevent interrupting other detectors. Unfortunately, other certain cheap ass detectors set off the V1. It's deathly annoying when a car with a piece of shit detector is tagging you on the highway and it keeps setting the V1 off. I've had that happen twice now, and I wanted to side swipe them.

FYI, the longest distance I've had the V1 clock a Ka radar is exactly 2.8 miles.
