Question regarding sub wiring...

My friend recently gave me an old blue Orion Cobalt 230 amp, however there was no manual with it.

First of all I was wondering if anyone could tell me the specs on it?

Do you think I could use it bridged to power 2, 10" Rockford Fosgate P110S4 Punch Subwoofers wired in parallel???

The subs handle 150 watts, 300 watts peak.

If this is not a viable option can anyone reccomend another (preferably cheap) amp?

Oh, and one more question...

We hooked into the rear door wiring for the left and right speakers and ran them into the trunk, we then plan on installing a LOC, and then a crossover, before the amp, is this the correct procedure?

Thanks a lot,

-Kai

No, way too much work... and the R doors don't get any bass to them, so you don't want their signals. The R deck 6x9 wires are the way to go, and are easier to access also.

Oh, I have PDF's of the manuals if you want them e-mailed.

This amp is rated 2x30 at 4 ohms, and while it is rated for 2 ohm operation it is not power-rated at 2 ohms. Looks like a crappy bass amp to me, and was a low-end amp even at the time.

PM'ed about the manuals.

As for the wiring, this is actually for my friends 2004 ford focus (why did i post here? because my family owns a tsx and i have been following this forum for quite some time, and everyone here seems much smarter than at other forums) and there is no filtering on the rear speakers, so was this the right way to go?

Should the crossover be installed before or after the amp?

And will the amp be ok to power the speakers temporarily? Or will it be too underpowered (dont want to do any damage)

thanks again,

-kai

Don't worry, I'm not laughing at you... but I am laughing. This has been a point of wanking debate, and so I'll leave you to find your own answer (hint, read the Car Audio Basics/SQ for noobs thread).

I don't know what kind of xover you have. (???) Active ones have RCA's and go before the amp, passive ones have speaker wires and go after the amp.

if you ask me i think you will be better off getting a new amp. firstly if you wire it bridged and present it with a 2 ohm load each channel will see 1 ohm and that will certainly spell disaster for that amp. find yourself a nice 300 watt class D amp they are cheap. efficient and will get the job done with minimal fuss.

I agree get a new AMP. Be aware that with the Class D Amp...you could lose some FM reception if the Ford Focus has an antenna in the rear windshield like the TSX
