ps2 project

sup everyone.

ive been wanting to do the whole playstation thing to my car, but never was really satisfied with the areas id have to put it in. well yesterday i bought one of those mini-ps2 consoles and i want to put it in the glove compartment. i checked the measurements before, as well as after i bought it, and it would fit with room to spare.
the only problem is, i havent been in the "gaming" scene lately (as far as console games go, i do pc game a lot) and i want to know what would to make this work...
and if its going to be any different than a regular ps2, if anyone knows? well im lookin for as much help as possible as im slow when it comes to this stuff....help greatly appreciated

well i think im just gonna keep the glove compartment as is, and just put a kind of holder in there in which to slide the ps2 into, drill holes in the bottom or back for the wires. along the lines of installation....everything should be pretty standard as far as a regular ps2 correct? so what would i need?

I just installed my new mini playstation friday night. Made a foam surround for it using 1/4 craft foam. as bad as it sound it actually looks really good. currently though it is done with red foam but i am going to get black to match the glove box. I currently done have a camera availible at the momnent so i will take some as soon as my dad gets home with his this afternoon. For the wires I just cut a small notch in the back of the glove box. and for the controllers I have two logitech wireless controllers.

Very nice job on the PS2 install. You have any more pics of the install and how is that screen in the sun. I was wondering if you could see it in direct sunlight.

wow, thats a really great install... maybe ill wait to do something like that when the slim ps2 goes down in price a bit, but thats awesome. and the screen was only 100 bucks? doesnt seem that bad at all. do you have a tv tuner or anything like that? what did you watch on the screen prior to the PS2?

also, how does that work with music? im guessing you can only listen to one at a time, so you wouldnt be able to listen to music while the ps2 is on? or is it connected at all to the sound?

Nice Install man!!

Where did you get the foam material for the surround?

I like how the slim ps2 looks in there very clean! Too bad there's no modchip out for it yet!

So do you have this hooked up to a seperate monitor or do you have it hooked up to the Navi screen?

Thanks for the replies!

You should look into the HDloader for the Ps2. This will allow you to store your games on a computer harddrive. Actually now that I think about it though, you have the new mini ps2.

Is there a network interface available for it and/or hard drive support?

I took a look at your home page. Nice pics man. I remember seeing your screen install before...I liked it then and I still think it's tight now!

Are you still running media engine? How's everything integrated together right now?
Are you just treating the Ps2, DVD, and computer as seperate inputs going into your screen?

That's cool man. If you're gonna use the ps2 as the DVD player you might want to get the USB DVD remote. It would probably be better than using the Ps2 controller.

Also, You might be able to get one of USB extension cables and reroute the Infrared eye out of the glove compartment. That way you could still use the ps2 and the controllers, remote with the Glove box closed ! That would be tight!!

The controllers are wireless so they work with the glove box closed. The new ps2 has a built in infered eye.

Also is there even a usb ir sensor for the ps2 if so could you please post a link to it.

hey how did you run the power for the ps2? Run it from the glove compartment all the way to the center console where you used an inverter? Or did you did a custom kit on the inverter?

That's sweet that the controllers work with the glove box closed!! It must not be standard IR controller that needs a clear light of site to communicate with the USB receiver.

The "USB Ir sensor" i was referring to is one that you get when you buy one of the Ps2 DVD controllers. When you buy one you will get a seperate little piece that plugs into the USB port and acts as a receiver for the controller. This uses standard Infrared technology so there must be a clear light of sight between the DVD remote and the USB IR receiver.
I was thinking you could get one of those cheap USB extension cables and route the IR eye/reciever somewhere else, so you can use the DVD remote with the glove box closed.

Of course, you could still use the standard controller as long as you don't mind controling the DVD while paying attention to the On screen display. Trying to hold a controller while driving may be a little distracting IMO. With the DVD controller you wouldn't even have to look in order to control the DVD player.

Too bad there is no modchip out for the slim Ps2...you would probably be able to run a mod that will allow you run a mp3 player on the ps2.

I ran the power wire through the center console and then drilled a hole for to allow the power plug to come into the armrest compartment. The inverter I have is junk and you have to turn it off and then back on every time you turn the car on. If you get a good inverter it will come on when the car comes on and then you can hide it some where which is what I wanted to do. The inverter is just running off of the cigarette light in the armrest.

I mounted the screen using a piece of sheet metal that I fabricated to hit two point behind when the two storage bins used to be. It is basically bent like this > and the screen attached to one angle and then you squeeze it together some and slide it between the two points that it hits. If I get some time this week I will take some pictures of it and post the, of both the points it hits and the piece of sheet metal that the screen is mounted too.

I thought that the remote plugged into the controller port and not the usb port. Is the remote you are talking about made by sony or another company. If there even is one I don’t know if I would do it cause of the way it is installed and messing up the looks with the usb being in the front.

I stand corrected. I'm sorry about that dude. I just looked and your right it just plugs into the controller port. I don't have one myself, but I do use the ps2 when I want to watch DVDs and I don't like using the controller to navigate through the menu.

For an extension you could just get a ps2 controller extension cable. I've seen those on Ebay for $3.

One more quick question about the logitech controllers. Your picture just shows one controller receiver, will that work for 2 controllers?
