On-Off-On Relay for Parking Brake Bypass

Is there such a thing? I have installed a Pioneer AVH 3200DVD in my car and I'm getting blocked from watching video. Last week during initial installation, I set it up to perma-ground the parking brake wire. That didn't work. Today, I rewired it to use a relay, so that the amp turnon lead would trigger the ground of the parking brake. This worked once, and thinking I was successful, buttoned everything up. Then I went out to lunch and I started getting the video prohibited message. Arrgh.

My research on this stereo model says that the video enable requires the parking brake to be on, then off, then on again. I am not excited about having to install a switch to trigger the video unlock. If it does come to that, I'll probably use a momentary-on switch that is normally ground, then push to break the ground.

But back to the original point. Is there a way to simulate an On-Off-On transition in ground using one or more relays? Anyone have a working setup using this or similar (4200DVD, 3100DVD) model?

Thanks in advance.

I have never heard of a Pioneer needing an off-on-off for an unlock. I thought it just needed a relay. If it must have on-off-on you can use a PAC TR7 for alpine bypass. Just dont use the foot brake wire. Its already preprogramed so you will only be connecting 4 wires.

There are plenty of instructions showing the use of a relay to enable the video, but I have seen at least one place that commented that the relay trick didn't work for more recent revisions.

However, I am quite impressed with the broad capabilities of the TR7 and now have one on order. We'll see how well it works. Thanks for the lead.

The more popular and easier way is to use an on/off switch, however numerous people use relays. I have my 4100 set up to use a dvd, I can post the diy guides that I used if you need them

I have the same unit and have a relay attached, and it works perfectly. In fact, I have TWO relays, one to do the parking brake ground thing, and one to handle multiple-equipment turn on in the back without stressing the remote lead.

The only time I get an error is when I'm trying to set the unit up without being on a source. When a source isn't playing, there is no 12V remote signal being sent out, ergo no relay engagement. When any source is flipped on, then the relay energizes, and of course everything works fine.

What kind of relay did you use for the "parking break ground thing" fourthmeal?

Those are your run-of-the-mill 4 terminal relays. Autozone has them for a couple bucks. Frys (an electronics store local to me) has them for about the same.

It goes:

remote 12V+ from head unit (amp turn on lead) to coil in relay, your choice of side. Other side is ground. The switch side of the relay should also be ground on one side, and parking brake lead on the other.

Then if you are running nice audio equipment in the trunk, and maybe some fans or lights... you need to wire in another relay after. But let's not get difficult if we don't have to.

I got my TR7 this week (took a while!) and tonight tried wiring it in. No joy. The feature that I wanted to use was "double pulse", but that is actually ON-OFF-ON-OFF. So the car's all back together again. I swear I can take my dash apart in my sleep now.

I shot off a quick email to PAC's tech support but they're not going to even see it until Tuesday. I can't wait that long.

After a short moment of reflection, I have another plan for tomorrow morning. I went out and bought a 5-pin relay to replace my current 4-pin one. I'll hook it up so that the relay is always grounded (pin 30 to stereo parking brake wire and pin 87a to ground, then leave pin 87 disconnected. I'll then wire the TR7 to double pulse the relay. This will cause the parking brake signal to start as ground, then trigger no ground-ground-no ground-ground (on-off-on-off), and remain on ground after the double pulse.

Hopefully, this is the last I have to disassemble the car. Then I can finally post new pictures to my car talk thread with all the updates.

It works as alpine bypass. Feature 2. Wire the red to acc., black to ground. The green on the tr7 to radios amp on lead(blue-white wire) and the white on the tr7 to parking brake on the pioneer. I did my wifes pioneer avh4200 last night. Works flawlessly. Make sure its set up for feature 2.

Woo hoo! Finally done. I tried the standard Alpine bypass feature with no success, so I hooked up my new relay as I described. Just to clarify that I am not crazy in my need for the double activation of the parking brake, since so many people here and elsewhere swear that a simple relay works, this is the acceptance screen when enabling video. It's pretty explicit.

But anyway, now I can view my Zunes through the head unit. And despite what the warning screen says, I feel it's safer for me to change tracks using peripheral vision while looking forward than it is for me to continually glance down and back up viewing the Zune's screen.
