Noob question: subwoofer to home theater setup

Is it possible to hook up my JL 3Wv2 D2 (2, 4, and 6 ohm) subwoofer to my home theater setup? I'm thinking in moving the sub out of my car as I'm starting to miss the trunk space.

So long as you have an amp you'll be fine.

So a receiver like this would work then?

We have a similar model.

No. You need a separate amp just for the subwoofer. Most receivers will only drive the "surrounds" and not the the sub.

So basically you need a single channel amp with an LFE input.

What you can do is get a seperate amplifier and hook it up using the LFE output of the receiver with a mono-stereo cable. Mono side connects to LFE output on receiver, stereo to RCA input on amplifier.

Your best bet is to use an amp specifically designed to power a subwoofer. This type is designed to be mounted on/in the sub enclosure. It has an adjustable low pass filter, auto on/off, phase control, hight and low level inputs, etc.

That's what my roommate had in my 4th yr in college. I was wondering if I could replicate his setup (he actually had two 10" boxes). But I'm not excited about having to spend more $$. Perhaps another time...

that reminds me... a friend in HS had a real classy arrangment in the back of his van - 2 10" or 12" woofers in buckets hooked up to a low frequency amp. That thing was damn loud, but damn ugly!
