okay,
so i found out from the dealer that type-s and non-type-s radio headunits are the same. there is however a difference between the nav and non-nav trims. i have an '01 tl with nav. i found a friend with a tl-s without nav. he is getting an aftermarket headunit.

is the difference just in the wiring harness? the navigation system must have some kind of input into the headunit. it mutes the two front speakers whenever directions are given. do you think i can get this to work? i really would like an in-dash changer!

if he is your friend, then give it a shot...i'm thinking it should work since everything is pretty much modular.
