Need a New HeadUnit -- Opinions/Suggestions Needed
Ok, I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of my in-dash tv and just going with the Navi Conversion.. What are some new features to look for in the newer radios? Just from watching "Pimp My Ride", do some radios have built in hard drives? I tried doing some research and only found one radio with 128mb and that's it.. Hook me up guys I need to get back on top of things.. Thanks

There's some nice units on this thread.

single din?
you are probably much better off adding an mp3 accessory drive than trying to find one actually "built in"
i personally like the idea of adding a portable mp3 player so that it serves dual purpose and would be harder to steal, such as the alpine 9833 with ipod link and an ipod or something, but thats just me, that way you can have mp3 reader, mp3 player and xm if you so desire... plus the normal goodies

I would go for something like this, personally.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Jbh9s2K...&avf=N&search=
$329 at crutchfield.
or this
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Jbh9s2K...&avf=N&search=
$299
both have non fading output for subs and an input for an mp3 player.
alpine has xm controls, clarion has sirius.

Satellite Radio Ready: Yes
Satellite Radio Ready: The receiver is compatible with optional tuners that will receive digital satellite radio broadcasts such as Sirius or XM Satellite Radio. The digital satellite service must be subscribed to separately.
RMS Power Output: 26 Watts
RMS: Root Mean Square is a formula that provides a reasonably accurate means of measuring and comparing continuous AC power. The use of this measure is preferred when matching system components, like amplifiers and receivers.
Preamp Voltage: 4 volts
Preamp Voltage: Refers to the strength of the pre-amp outputs. Generally, higher output voltages make it easier to get a cleaner and a more noise free signal delivered to amps and pre-amps.
Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: Yes
Preamp Output: Typically found on headunits, a preamp output provides low level, high quality audio signal for use with external amplifiers.
Maximum Power: 60 Watts
Maximum Power: The amount of power a speaker is estimated to handle during a brief high-intensity musical burst. Since this can vary with both frequency and amplitude, it is a much less accurate way to judge speaker durability and performance than RMS.

and crutchfield is a little more expensive, but they are such a great company I don't mind paying a couple bucks more. they have the best customer service I've ever used, no questions asked returns, and a great website with tons of info. plus they include the wiring harness for free.
and sirius > xm

Ok, possibly in the future I may run speakers, so I would need the extra outputs for possible upgrade.. I do run a amp and sub so I would like nice sub controls.. I'm not too worried about whether it's sirius or xm.. And I will be running a IPod in the future ao anything extra that will run that would be great.. So what would be my best bet for around $300 or so..?

the alpine has a 4v preamp output, vs. the clarion's 1.8 (higher is better).
the clarion has a 2 yr warranty, alpine is 1 year
clarion has rca inputs...the alpine input requires an adapter ($15 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-l45UPty...KCA121B&o=&a=0)
clarion has 80 colors you can cycle through I guess...the alpine is just green.
personally I like alpines better than any other decks. I would go with the alpine. Besides having the best sound I've heard, they just look classy.

i agree with beetroot, alpine is definetly your best bet, i would just spring for the 9833 and get it from a cheaper retailer, but i understand the comment about customer service, that is probably true, i have never gotten burned buying it from someplace cheaper so...
either way alpine 98xx series... plus ainet will own for an ipod later
and by the way xm > sirius :P

there is an optional adapter for rca's as beetroot pointed out ^^, but up above i posted in this link there will be the optimal way to connect your ipod that will allow you to browse through the head unit using alpine's ai net feature, basically what bmw did but accessible to any ai net alpine head unit
which is one main reason i will be going with them in my s2k... it isn't out yet but should be within a month and a half, it also lets you lessen the blow of $ and add it on at your convinience...

yeah. look in the 'key features' on this page
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-zL9kwat...&avf=N&search=
halfway down you see 'optional auxiliary input'...its called optional because you need this adapter...
