My plans for MUCH better sound

I was asked by someone to post my plans for my new stereo that I'll be getting installed into my 2001 CL-P hopefully within the next month or two. This is going to be a complete redo, ripping out everything having to do with the stock system.

Equipment:

Nakamichi CD700 head unit
Nakamichi MB70 6disc in-dash changer
Brax X2000 2x190w amplifier
Focal Utopia 6.5" component speakers
Eclipse 88120DVC (2) subwoofers
JBL 1200.1 subwoofer amplifier

cables are still being decided upon, but will most likely be Kimber Kable throughout the car.

D60 digital cable for between the head unit & changer
PBJ unbalanced interconnects for between the head unit & amps
4tc speaker wire for between the amps and speakers

I will also be replacing the battery, probably adding 2 1F caps if needed, and dynomatting the shit out of the doors & trunk at the very least.

Speakers will be installed in the stock door locations with a lot of work being done to the door. I'd go with kicks, but I'm 6' tall and leg room is a bit tight to start with. We'll be building a full custom enclosure for the speakers within the door. Full fiberglass mold will be done, then the enclosure will be custom made from that mold. I've heard a similar setup and it was amazing what could be accomplished.
Both subs will be in a single box, but will have seperate chambers for each one. An amp rack is being built to hold both amps, also.
The dynomatting should help prevent any rattles from the subs, and should also prevent any rattles from the speakers in the doors. The Focals can put out some great bass if done correctly.

This should end up being one sweet sounding system. The install is going to end up costing me a load of money, but it should be worth it once it's done. By and far, MUCH better than the Blose system it came with.

Comments? Mental ward recommendation? Thoughts? Let's hear them.

Welcome to the Forum.
That’s going to be one KICK ASS system.
Who is doing it for you?

You’re local……I’ll have to give it a listen when it's done.

That is going to be an awesome sounding system! But holy shit is it going to be expensive. The Nakamichi's are one of the best decks out there(Next to McIntosh). And you will love the Eclipse subs I've got one 10" 88100 and it sounds great. I would suggest getting a sealed box for them though. That is what Eclispe and other net sites recommed, and is what I have also.

Patryn,

Sounds like it will be a sweet system. I am planning something similar for my TL-S.

Nak CD-700
Nak MB-70
Brax Platinum 4x100w + 2x200w (Just got it last week, very sweet!)
Brax X1000 2x100w
Dynaudio MD130/MW170/X280 up front
Dynaudio MW150 rear
2 Velodyne DF10sc's

I will be running the 2x200w to the front set, and the 4x100w bridged to 2x400 to the subs, and the 2x100w will be used for the rear. The front's will be in Kick's since there is no way I am going to try and fit a 4" tweet amd 8" mid in the doors.

Brax Platinum and X1000 will be in a raised trunk floor, the subs will be in a glassed spare tire well.

I will probably be using either Kimber or Monster M cables.

I own everything but the headunit(s) as I am still deciding, but it will most likely be the Nak's.

Anyway, we should keep in touch to keep each other on track with the install's

Good luck with your! Looks like it's gonna be great!

oops, guess I better fix my sig, the S4 has been sold back to the dealer due to too many problems (long story). Before you ask, all of the audio gear from the S4 has been sold, starting fresh with the TL-S

Chizad1980 - I'm definately going with a sealed box. No question about it. I'm still trying to figure out the size to go with. I've heard of good results with anywhere between .75 - 1.25 cubic feet, so I'm still deciding. Suggestions?
Oh, btw, the person I bought the CD700/Brax/Focals from had the top line McIntosh head unit before. He said in his opinion, the Nak beat it easily.

Autophile - Damn. I thought I was spending a lot. I'm not even bothering with the rear fill though. Figure I'll save myself a few hundred dollars by skipping it. I've had my rear speakers off for the last 2 months now with the stock system and I don't miss it a bit. Once the new system is installed I doubt I'll ever get rear speakers again.
I was looking at a Velodyne 12" from somebody. They are supposed to be hands down the best you can buy. Problem is, never having heard one (car version that is. I've owned their home subs before) I'm not prepared to spend the money on it. I got both Eclipse subs for less than I can buy the Velo for private sale, and I know the Eclipse can sound very good. You'll have to let me know how they do.
Definately, no question, absolutely go with Kimber over Monster.

Considering the research you've put in so far, you probably already know this... but I'd suggest investing in the higher grades of Dynamat rather than the "regular" grade. I covered about 80% of my previous car and most of the trunk lid and spare tire well of my CL in "Super". I finished up the trunk lid with "regular."

I can't really report on the difference in effectiveness, but I can definitely say that the "Super" grade is much easier to work with; "Premium" and "Xtreme" should be even better in this regard. They are more expensive, but the difference is pretty much negligible compared to the rest of your setup.

Promises to be a great system. Good luck .

This would be Peter from the autophile right? I bought all of my stuff from hime too

I agree in your case rear fill may not be a good idea. I just feel that since I have four doors, my rear passengers might actually enjoy riding in the back if I give them something to listen too

Well the Vel's, in my opinion, are the best for SQ bar none. The thing is, is if you want even the slightest bit of SPL look elsewhere. The servo's limit the subs to 110db! There are a lot of SQ/Spl subs out there that sound very good A/D/S/, Oz, Crystal, and Aliante just to name a few. I have heard the Eclipse in other cars before but have never had any personal experiences with them. From what I have heard, they sound pretty good.

I hear ya on the Kimber. The problem is, is that no one sells it where I live. I live in Canada and am not sure if I want to pay duties just for some audio wires

Anyway, let me know when your install starts.

P.S. My brother has the Focal Utopia 165W set and loves them!

Actually, no it isn't. I bought all 3 pieces from a private seller. I AM buying the Kimber & MB70 from Peter though. The Brax originally came from him too. It does seem that Peter favors the Nak though. He seems to be running them in a lot of his personal cars. Can't blame him a bit.

Check out this site. It has some specs on box sizes for Eclipses. Maybe it will make your decision a little easier.

OMFG!!! I just looked up the price of that Nakamichi CD700. $1750!! But one sites' review said it was the best car stereo known to man. And that they were fairly rare. I wish I could afford to put that in my CL. Excellent choice man.

I just got a OZ Audio 300L to replace my 2 10 Pefects. Hopefully it will sound a lot better. Im not looking for pure SPL, just somehting that has excellent SQ, that can get fairly loud.
